Résumé:
More and more of us are choosing to live in the man-made environment of the city. The mismatch between this artificial world and our nature-starved souls can contribute to the stresses of city living in a way that is barely noticed – but is crucially important. What does the science of architectural psychology tell us about how the world of brick and concrete affects how we think, feel and behave? In an increasingly crowded urban world, how does good urban design inspire, restore and bring us together? Conversely, how does bad architecture cause anxiety, alienation and depression?Starting with the home and reaching out to the street, neighbourhood and wider city landscape, Headspace teaches us how to see our cities differently, and how we can best adapt to our rapidly changing urban world.

Résumé:
Offers an innovative approach to understanding the cultural history of Tel Aviv by exploring the mythical dimension and texture of the city. Founded in 1909 as a "garden suburb" of the Mediterranean port of Jaffa, Tel Aviv soon became a model of Jewish self-rule and was celebrated as a jewel in the crown of Hebrew revival. Over time the city has transformed into a lively metropolis, renowned for its architecture and culture, openness and vitality. A young city about to celebrate its 100th anniversity, the mythic Tel Aviv continues to represent a fundamental idea that transcends the physical texture of the city and the everyday experiences of its residents. Combining historical research and cultural analysis, Maoz Azaryahu explores the different myths that have been part of the vernacular and perception of the city. He relates Tel Aviv’s mythology to its physicality through buildings, streets, personal experiences, and municipal policies. With critical insight, he evaluates specific myths and their propagation in the spheres of both official and popular culture. Azaryahu explores three distinct stages in the history of the mythic Tel Aviv: "The First Hebrew City" assesses Tel Aviv as Zionist vision and seed of the actual city; "Non-Stop City" depicts trendy, global post-Zionist Tel Aviv; and "The White City" describes Tel Aviv’s architectural landscape, created in the 1930s and imbued with nostalgia and local prestige. Tel Aviv: Mythography of a City will appeal to urban geographers, cultural historians, scholars of myth, and students of Israeli society and culture.

Résumé:
“Landscape Architecture and Town Planning in The Netherlands 01-03” offers a critical survey of current landscape architectonic and urban planning projects, and enables professional colleagues, clients and other interested parties to keep abreast of the 'state of the art' in landscape architecture and town planning in The Netherlands. The 2001-2003 edition is the fifth in a series of biannual publications. A commission under the leadership of Tineke Blok, comprised of Ruud Brouwers, Ton Hartman, Sylvia Karres, Martin Knuijt and Frits Palmboom, selected over 40 projects which are exemplary in one manner or another. Important themes this time are reconstruction of centres, neighbourhoods and parks, and what is being called the 'new collectivity' in town expansions and city centre projects. A number of analytic essays and opinion pieces by Ivan Nio, Rudi van Ettinger and Frans de Josselin de Jong, among others, precede the selection. The selection is accompanied by a commentary by Ruud Brouwers. Peter Paul Witsen wrote the project descriptions.

Résumé:
The city is where Italian radical architecture represented and experimented its theories. While the early projects remained theoretical proposals, some contributions by Archizoom, Superstudio, or Strum established an ambiguous relationship with design that became crucial after the international exhibition "Italy: the new domestic landscape", curated by Emilio Ambasz at the Museum of Modern Art New York in 1972. With the exception of Zziggurat, all participants, such as UFO, Gianni Pettena, Ugo La Pietra and 9999, chose the "piazza" - the public space - for their theoretical and practical experimentation as the adequate venue for installations and performances that used the same language as that of artists.
