Résumé:
What do outer space capsules, submarines and office buildings have in common? Each was conceived as a closed system- a self-sustaining physical environment demarcated from its surroundings by a boundary prohibiting the transfer of matter or energy. As partial reconstructions of the world in time and space, closed systems identify and implement the basic materials necessary for the sustenance of life. From the space program to countercultural architectural groups experimenting with autonomous living, ''The Architecture of Closed Worlds'' documents a disciplinary transformation and the rise of a new environmental consciousness.

Résumé:
Architecture builds upon history. Even the avant-gardist creed to “make it new” still assumes a past. It is impossible to imagine novelty without an awareness of what existed before. This is even more true for the reuse and appropriation of existing structures, where designers take a stance relative to the past. In their transformation projects the office of diederendirrix architects retell stories of buildings and sites – by paraphrasing part of the story, by recasting central actors, by making architecture speak in other words. In so doing, they make it anew.

This new edition of the classic work on the politics of architecture—and the architecture of politics—appears on the fiftieth anniversary of the Six-Day War, which expanded Israel’s domination over Palestinian lands. Résumé:
Jahresring 65 is specific to Fogo Island, an island of approximately 2,500 inhabitants located off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. A centuries-old cod-fishing settlement, the community’s livelihood was almost devastated in the mid-twentieth century due to industrial overfishing. The island is now experiencing profound social, economic, and cultural transformation, due in part to a recent series of art, social, business, and asset-based community development initiatives. Now, Fogo Island stands as an example of the potential (but also the contradictions) of contemporary alliances between art, design, and social entrepreneurship.
