Résumé:
Parametricism is an avant-garde architecture and design movement that has been growing and maturing over the last 15 years, emerging as a remarkable global force. The tendency started in architecture but now encompasses all design disciplines, from urban design to fashion. In architecture, the style has an international following and is currently progressing beyond its experimental roots to make an impact on a broader scale, with practices like Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) winning and completing large-scale architectural projects worldwide. Parametricism implies that all elements and aspects of an architectural composition or product are parametrically malleable; and the style owes its original, unmistakable physiognomy to its unprecedented use of computational design tools and fabrication methods. All design parameters are conceived as variables that allow the design to vary and adapt to the diverse, complex and dynamic requirements of contemporary society. Although Parametricism has been talked about and hotly debated for a number of years, so far there has been no publication dedicated to Parametricism. The issue is guest-edited by Patrik Schumacher, partner at ZHA, and one of the world’s most highly renowned advocates of Parametricism.

Résumé:
Christo and Jeanne-Claude are renowned for their dramatic and innovative public projects. Their installations often feature fabric, sometimes wrapped around existing structures or used to create large-scale temporary environments. Some of their most influential projects include Running Fence in Sonoma and Marin Counties, California, Surrounded Islands in Miami, the Pont Neuf Wrapped in Paris, the Wrapped Reichstag in Berlin, and The Umbrellas simultaneously in Japan and California. Now New York City, where they have lived and worked for forty years, will be the site for a much-anticipated Christo and Jeanne-Claude project. The Gates will consist of saffron-coloured fabric panels suspended from the horizontal tops of over 7,500 sixteen-foot-tall vinyl gates, positioned at regular intervals throughout 23 miles of walkways of Central Park. The installation will be on view for sixteen days, beginning February 12, 2005 (weather permitting). This book, published in conjunction with a major exhibition that opens in April 2004 at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, celebrates the culmination of the artists' vision for The Gates, a project that began in 1979. It includes an illustrated introduction by Jonathan Fineberg that surveys the career of Christo and Jeanne-Claude and assesses their contribution to contemporary art and culture.

The goal of the GreenGuide is to help Greater Vancouver celebrate the initiatives that are underway, and share these lessons as we continue to turn ideas into action. The GreenGuide consist of a highly graphical, pocket-sized guidebook, accompanied by a large-scale foldable map that allows users to locate projects easily. It documents and highlights key sustainability features of 111 projects, provides suggested tours, and tells our region’s sustainability story.

Tracing an unbroken line, the eye is guided from one sweeping landscape to the next without doubting their separateness in location and origin, showing the interconnectedness of distant environments, opening up conversations between the different (political) landscapes in which we live. Renate Aller is a German living in New York. Her large-scale photographs are held in numerous museums including the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the National Gallery of Art, Washington D. C., the Yale University Art Gallery, the George Eastman Museum, the New York Historical Society Museum, the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Le Locle, and the Parrish Art Museum.

Résumé:
Recognizing that buildings are a major contributor to global warming and the critical role of embodied versus operational carbon, the book focuses on houses built from materials that either sequester carbon (plants), use materials with very low embodied carbon (earth and stone) or reuse substantial amounts of existing materials. Organized by those materials (wood, bamboo, straw, hemp, cork, earth, brick, stone and re-use), and incorporating life cycle diagrams demonstrating how the raw material is processed into building components, the book shows how the unique properties of each material can transform the ways architects conceive the sections of houses. The house was selected as the vehicle for these investigations due to its scale, its role as a site of architectural experimentation, and its ubiquity. Building on the techniques of the "Manual of section," the book is comprised of newly generated cross-sectional drawings of fifty-five recent, modestly sized houses from around the world, making legible the tectonics and materials used in their construction. Each house is also shown through exploded axonometric, construction photographs and color photographs of the exterior and interior. Introductory essays set up the importance of embodied carbon, the role of vernacular plant-based construction and the problems of contemporary house construction. Drawing connections between the architecture of the house, environmental systems and material economies, the book seeks to change how we build now and for the future.

Résumé:
"This is an experiential architecture, not a theoretical one. It is grounded in reality, not in abstract dogma, yet it seeks the transcendent, every bit as earnestly - perhaps even more so - then architecture that is built on pure theory. It is the way space, texture, light, materials actually feel that motivates these architects, and it is their skill at manipulating these elements that gives their work the rigor and strength it possesses. This architecture is marked by a sense of a self-assured and sensual presence, shaped by light, texture, materiality and scale. It should almost go without saying at this point that in an age in which most architects actively seek to achieve the identity of a "look," Olson Sundberg's work eschews simple similarities. Certain principles are evident from one building to another, as is the absence of direct historical replication, but consistency is not the same as a packageable style. Indeed, a single, easily identifiable style is something that these architects not only do not have but seem actively to discourage, as if its presence could be taken as a sign that their firm was not sufficiently cognizant of the widely varying demands that are inherent in different clients' programs, sites and esthetic preferences. They seem determined to prove that consistency of belief need not yield similarity of visual appearance – and that it is possible to produce a coherent body of work that does not look precisely the same." Excerpted from the introduction written by Paul Goldberger.

Résumé:
Over the course of three years, the Institute of Architecture and Planning at the University of Liechtenstein, the Mackintosh School of Architecture in Glasgow, and the Academie van Bouwkunst, Amsterdam, cooperated on an international research project dedicated to the design of façades. "Crafting the Façade" presents the results of this productive cooperative study, which cut across disciplines to look at historical developments in the design and building of façades, the theoretical underpinnings that can explain these developments, the common materials and their main characteristics, and the techniques used in assembly. The project also prompted a great deal of innovative design work, including detailed drawings at a scale of 1:10 and the design and construction of life-size prototypes in stone, brick, and wood—all of which are reproduced here among the book’s two hundred illustrations.

Résumé:
''The care manifesto'' puts care at the heart of the debates of our current crisis: from intimate care--childcare, healthcare, elder care--to care for the natural world. We live in a world where carelessness reigns, but it does not have to be this way. ''The care manifesto'' puts forth a vision for a truly caring world. The authors want to reimagine the role of care in our everyday lives, making it the organising principle in every dimension and at every scale of life. We are all dependent on each other, and only by nurturing these interdependencies can we cultivate a world in which each and every one of us can not only live but thrive. ''The care manifesto'' demands that we must put care at the heart of the state and the economy. A caring government must promote collective joy, not the satisfaction of individual desire. This means the transformation of how we organise work through co-operatives, localism and nationalisation. It proposes the expansion of our understanding of kinship for a more 'promiscuous care'. It calls for caring places through the reclamation of public space, to make a more convivial city. It sets out an agenda for the environment, most urgent of all, putting care at the centre of our relationship to the natural world.
