These artists approach sound from a variety of disciplines - visual arts, architecture, performance, computer programming and music - yet they share an interest in working with, rather than against or independent of, a given situation or environment. Résumé:
Has corporate business overtaken the art world? It's no secret that art and business have always mixed, but their relationship today sparks more questions than ever. "Museum, inc." describes the new art conglomerates from an insider's perspective, probing how their roots run deep into corporate culture. Paul Werner draws on his nine years at the Guggenheim Museum to reveal that contemporary art museums have not broken radically with the past, as often claimed. Rather, Werner observes, they are the logical outcome of the evolution of cultural institutions rooted in the eighteenth-century Enlightenment, the colonial expansion of the liberal nation-state, and the rhetoric of democracy. Werner critically analyzes today's art institutions and reframes the public's accepted view of them, exposing how their apparent success belies the troubling forces operating within them. He ultimately argues that the art museum we know and love may have already run its course. An engaging discourse structured as an informal gallery talk, "Museum, inc." is a thought-provoking and passionate polemic that offers ideas for a new, more democratic museum.

Résumé:
Collected here for the first time are Liam Gillick’s major fictional texts: ‘McNamara Papers’, Ibuka’, ‘Discussion Island/Big Conference Centre’, ‘The Winter School’, with Erasmus is Late and Literally No Place. Within each history and the utopias and alternative visions of society envisioned by writers, filmmakers, philosophers, and scientists are presented and speculated on, often through the fictionalised voices of secondary historical characters. Traversing genres of fiction and critical discourse, ideas are explored in a nonlinear, open-ended discursive format, in which the textual structure mirrors the structuring of the presented ideas. In each text Gillick’s concern is to explore complex, paradoxical historical moments and the ideologies that shaped, reflecting on how the redundant utopian elements of the past continue to structure contemporary society and remain impulses within speculations of our post-utopian future.

Résumé:
Jesus died at the age of 33. This publication, which accompanies the first New Museum triennial, Younger Than Jesus, focuses on artists born after 1975. Departing from popular assertions about the group, which the media has dubbed the "Millennials," or "Generation Y," this reader presents the work of nearly 50 international artists, based on the conviction that radical gestures have often been carried out by young artists. It illuminates both the shared practices and the dramatic differences found within this age group. Along with a generous selection of color reproductions of the artists' work, this volume includes essays by exhibition curators Lauren Cornell, Massimiliano Gioni and Laura Hoptman, along with an anthology of reprinted texts by a diverse group of writers--including philosophers, sociologists and technology experts--which contextualize the work within the significant events of the past 30 years--for example, globalization and the increased networking of culture and daily life.

Résumé:
"The Empty Room", in the absence of any visual materials, was a written manifesto composed of RZLBD’s poems and collection of quotes intended to portray the room and the emptiness as the essence of architecture. Now, "100 Rooms" complements our own blurry images of the empty room with a visual guide. Each spread consists of a plan and a physical model of a room, which is an excavation of the geometry and order inherent within the square. It holds no design intention — no scale or function — but simply one of infinite possibilities that emerge from a square. This framework suggests that the formal expression of a room comes from within. With these visual references, one can begin to imagine many approximations to the empty room. A line on paper is always less, as Kahn says, but through these measurable means, the immeasurable idea of the empty room will be formed in one’s mind.

Résumé:
We barely talk about them and seldom know their names. Philosophy has always overlooked them; even biology considers them as mere decoration on the tree of life. And yet plants give life to the Earth: they produce the atmosphere that surrounds us, they are the origin of the oxygen that animates us. Plants embody the most direct, elementary connection that life can establish with the world. In this highly original book, Emanuele Coccia argues that, as the very creator of atmosphere, plants occupy the fundamental position from which we should analyze all elements of life. From this standpoint, we can no longer perceive the world as a simple collection of objects or as a universal space containing all things, but as the site of a veritable metaphysical mixture. Since our atmosphere is rendered possible through plants alone, life only perpetuates itself through the very circle of consumption undertaken by plants. In other words, life exists only insofar as it consumes other life, removing any moral or ethical considerations from the equation. In contrast to trends of thought that discuss nature and the cosmos in general terms, Coccia’s account brings the infinitely small together with the infinitely big, offering a radical redefinition of the place of humanity within the realm of life.
