Résumé:
Geoffrey James spent months tracking the Prairie light while photographing the city of Lethbridge and its environs. Those images reveal something of a place, a sensibility and a harsh light that together probe to the core of the Canadian experience. The images formed the basis of an exhibition, The Lethbridge Project, at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery. Now, they have been married with the words of Rudy Wiebe to present a vision of the very soul of Canada, and of that Prairie experience which has so informed recent Canadian fiction. Rudy Wiebe offers an accompanying set of brief stories that draw on many layers of history as well as his personal memories to evoke the sense of place that is Lethbridge.

"What precedes architecture?" Architect-artist Malgorzata Maria Olchowska (°Bartoszyce, 1982) investigates how personal and collective memories influence our view of the built environment. According to Olchowska, there is no limit to the resilience of cities: "Cities go up and down, we see that now with the war in Ukraine or with the earthquake in Turkey and Syria. Urban districts that are now in ruins will sooner or later be rebuilt." The book is built around a text by Vlad Ionescu (Faculty of Architecture and Art, PXL/UHasselt) in which he reflects on Olchowska’s work, from 2009 to today. This is supplemented and illustrated by means of a visual essay in which Olchowska shows her work of the last five years.

Résumé:
The iconic Edith Farnsworth House is a singular glass home designed by Mies van der Rohe. But the oft-told history of the house overwrites Farnsworth’s role as Mies’s collaborator and antagonist while falsely portraying her as the architect’s angry ex-lover. Nora Wendl’s audacious work of creative nonfiction explodes the sex-and-real-estate myth surrounding the Edith Farnsworth House and its two central figures. An eminent physician and woman of letters, Farnsworth left a rich trove of correspondence, memoirs, and photographs that Wendl uses to reconstruct her voice. Farnsworth’s memories and experiences alternate with Wendl’s thoughts on topics like misogyny and professional ambition to fashion a lyrical examination of love, loneliness, beauty, and the search for the divine.

Résumé:
How do we relate to the spaces we inhabit? What happens when home shifts from “everyday” to “one day,” from accumulation to loss? How is memory bound to place, and what persists when a place itself withdraws? “Home” emerges through the accumulation of time condensing lived experience into a sense of belonging and continuity. In domestic interiors, everyday routines leave traces that accumulate into a personal archive, while memories become inseparably attached to the places we inhabit. When “home” ceases to be a site of return and instead becomes a transient condition, continuity disperses. Memory no longer accumulates in one place but fragments across spaces that disappear from everyday life. Each departure marks a rupture, as a place passes irreversibly into the past.

In 1987, "The Main: Portrait of a Neighborhood" was published and quickly sold out. The critically acclaimed project celebrated the communities around Montreal’s Boulevard Saint Laurent and contributed to the eventual designation of "The Main" as a Canadian heritage landmark. In 2017, to celebrate the city’s 375th anniversary, the author was invited to re-imagine the original book. Returning to his former neighborhood, his new book weaves old and new photographs with texts and archives, inviting us on a journey into his creative process to reflect on questions of home, identity, time, memory, and the evolving urban landscape, and asking: in a globalized world where people and cities are in constant movement, what happens to places and memories? Can we go home again?

This volume presents 70 color photographs of America imbued with both clarity and nostalgia. Italian photographer Luca Campigotto takes us from the canyons, deserts and coal-mining ghost towns of the American West to Idaho’s large auto cemeteries, to the Bronx and other industrial fringes of New York City, to a town in Montana whose brick architecture is reminiscent of Edward Hopper’s paintings. The solitude of the wild frontier and the distance of the urban periphery alternate between dazzling daytime lights and mysterious nocturnes. Each photo is accompanied by short poetic notes—a journey of personal memories which echo literary and cinematographic works—serving as an evocation of some American topoi, above all, the timeless myth of “on the road” traveling.

Architects the world over are familiar with the name Bauhaus. A century after it was founded, the principles, philosophies and memories of this avant-garde school are still very much alive. Bauhaus is a legend, and its legacy continues to shape our world in many different ways. To mark its centenary, Detail has produced an autograph book in which 100 architects from all over the world wish the school a happy birthday. Their short texts, photos and sketches reveal what Bauhaus means to them. The result is a colourful album of anecdotes, experiences and personal stories that will raise a smile or make you think. Rather than defining what Bauhaus is, the short statements show the extent to which Bauhaus is still relevant today. Details

Résumé:
Fonts have different personalities that can create trust or mistrust, give you confidence, make things seem easier to do or make a product taste better. Understand the science behind how fonts influence what you read. They're hidden in plain sight, they trigger memories, associations and multi-sensory experiences in your imagination. You may not believe it, but fonts can change the meanings of words right before your very eyes, alter the taste of your food, evoke emotional responses and reveal their users' personalities. Graphic designer Sarah Hyndman specializes in exploring how fonts influence us as type consumers; ''Why fonts matter'' synthesizes Hyndman's 20 years of experience as graphic designer with her typographic research and the findings of experimental psychologists and neuroscientists.
