Presentation of the little known pioneering work of Arne Jacobsen in the field of architecture. Accompanies the exhibitions at six places of work of Jacobsen and Weitling throughout Germany. Scandinavian design meets German efficiency The architecture by Arne Jacobsen and Otto Weitling is of outstanding importance for post-war modernism in Germany. The calibre of their projects, however, has been forgotten. "Gesamtkunstkwerke" closes this gap in the appreciation of their work with a comprehensive presentation of seven out of eight German projects by the Danish master architects. Jacobsen and Weitling's Scandinavian functionalism is a reflection of the visions of the former FRG - designs and commissions grounded in democracy, prestige and efficiency. The publication also takes stock of how the legacy of late modernism is being handled.

Résumé:
Chicago is a city dedicated to the modern—from the skyscrapers that punctuate its skyline to the spirited style that inflects many of its dwellings and institutions, from the New Bauhaus to Hull-House. Despite this, the city has long been overlooked as a locus for modernism in the arts, its rich tradition of architecture, design, and education disregarded. Still the modern in Chicago continues to thrive, as new generations of artists incorporate its legacy into fresh visions for the future. Chicago Makes Modern boldly remaps twentieth-century modernism from our new-century perspective by asking an imperative question: How did the modern mind—deeply reflective, yet simultaneously directed—help to dramatically alter our perspectives on the world and make it new?

Résumé:
What is architecture's place in the world? Combining history, theory, and polemic, George Baird probes into the conceptual lineage and current expressions of postmodernism and the critique of postmodern architecture over the past four decades, revealing the general failure of these theories to develop an architecture that is politically engaged and affirmative of the public sphere. Hannah Arendt's imperative of worldliness plays a pivotal role in Baird's reading of what has come to be called architecture's belief system. It is not enough, he argues, to reject the totalizing models of publicness that have been typical both of modernism and of many of its postmodern successors. Rather, he insists, it is necessary to construct a "space of appearance" that is large and diverse enough to make places for all of us. Baird stakes out clearly and sharply the recent history of ideas that bear on the field, recovering influences and ideas that have been omitted from standard histories of modernism and building an understanding of our present dilemmas that is constructive and critically informed. The period from 1960 to the present has seen the collapse of the conditions that shored up modern architecture, as conventionally understood, and has also seen modernism succeeded by a whole series of tentative alternatives, none of which has successfully achieved the decisive legitimization modernism once held. After an extended introduction that situates architecture's current dilemmas within the broader currents of cultural theory, The Space of Appearance focuses on specific historical episodes or developments. Each chapter outlines a different controversy or series of controversies, or depicts the gradual and insidious erosion of certain firmly held beliefs. Each chapter is also structured around a conceptual account of issues that have evolved in the trajectory of contemporary cultural theory since the key interventions of Arendt in the 1950s. (first edition : 1995.)

Résumé:
Conversion, adaptation, reuse - these techniques are as old as construction itself. However, since the industrialization of the building industry and the emergence of modernism in architecture, newly constructed buildings have dominated our idea of good and progressive architecture. For decades, conversion did not play a significant role in architectural practice. Today, things have changed. The industrialization of the construction industry has led to environmental degradation, and the reform potential of modernism has been exhausted. Consequently, the existing building stock is one of the resources - perhaps even the most important resource - for the transformation of our cities. Against this backdrop, the architecture of conversion has made an unexpected comeback. Young architects in particular are providing surprising answers to the environmental and social questions of our time with their conversion projects.
