Résumé:
This publication provides a new perspective on the cultural landscapes of mining across the province of Asturias in north-west Spain. These areas, after undergoing an intense process of industrialisation, have changed considerably within just a few decades. What were once natural valleys with rural economic and social structures came to host bustling, dense urban agglomerations. As a result, hybrid architectures have emerged, mutating artefacts which, despite the invisibility of their inevitable marginality, can offer interesting lessons in architecture today. Richly illustrated with photographs and diagrams, it features contributions from noted artists and architects.

Résumé:
Daido Moriyama (born 1938 in Ikeda, Japan) invented a new visual language with his work beginning in the mid-1960s. Frenetic and tormented, it depicted a reality that was grainy, blurry, and out-of-focus. Witness to the spectacular changes that trans-formed postwar Japan, his photographs express the contradictions in a country where age-old traditions persist within a modern society. Often blurred, taken from vertiginous angles, or overwhelmed by close-ups, they show a proximity to and a particular relationship with the subject. This book was published to coincide with an exhibition at the Fondation Cartier, and includes many previously unpublished photographs (as well as those featured in the exhibition), and an interview with the artist.

A monograph on the architecture and design studio of Wiel Arets, ‘Nature is nature’ encompasses drawings, images, diagrams, texts, theories, sketches, and more. In his work and philosophy, Arets engages with the relations between humans and nature, interior and exterior, and the experience of the body moving through space within a series of prescribed cinematographic sequences. It is this circulation and routing in his oeuvre, and the ergonomics of interaction with his industrial designs, which is the key feature that defines the studio. The publication gathers signature projects by Arets alongside thoughtful essays, together allowing unique insight into his design approach.

Résumé:
The exhibition Prosodic Grains at ''BY ART MATTERS'' (??????) draws inspiration from Chinese literature's pursuit of natural law and balanced beauty in phonology. It features works from over a dozen artists across different countries and regions, exploring the origins, elasticity, and limitations of human communication. For individuals, language and music carry fleeting emotions and thoughts; for human communities, they embody living histories and shared memories that reside in our collective consciousness. Embracing this holistic vision, the exhibition weaves individual breaths into the tapestry of global currents, embarking on a journey that awakens synesthetic sensations and delves into the realms of listening, perception, and resonance. In this information age, where attention fragments amidst discord and conflict, perhaps by experiencing and conveying the ineffable rhythmic beauty that transcends time and space, we can guide people back to their primal yearning for connection and mutual understanding. The publication ''Prosodic Notes'' emerges from the exhibition but isn't strictly bound by its concepts—it can be viewed as an alternative aspect of the exhibition. As we shaped this publication, we maintained an open dialogue with artists around the question: "How can works that pulse with sound and language find new life within the bounds of pages?" Some content consists of the original creations by artists. Another thread weaves in the artists' journeys toward their final works, including sketches, notes, archives, and interviews. These elements serve as passageways connecting living memories and experiences of the exhibition.

Résumé:
Between 1979 and 1981, Alfredo Jaar asked Chileans a deceptively simple question: "Are you happy?" Through private interviews, sidewalk polls and video-recorded forums, among other interventions, Jaar's three-year and seven-phase project, ''Studies on happiness'', addressed a furtive and fearful population living under Augusto Pinochet's military dictatorship. It also spoke to a country in transition, as a newly adopted constitution remade Chile through privatisation and other neoliberal reforms. In its varied interventions and direct mode of address, ''Studies on happiness'' functioned as a feedback device meant to catalyse a critical awareness with its blunt questioning. Edward A. Vazquez contextualises Studies on Happiness within Jaar's early production and situates his practice within a Chilean art world haunted by the residues of political violence. This study foregrounds the project's historical embeddedness and the deep political stakes of its apparent sociality, recognising the crucial role that context has always played in Jaar's practice. By turning to the Santiago of Studies on Happiness, Vazquez explores the work's political and art historical environment and provides a wedge to realign current interpretations of Chilean art and hemispheric conceptualism with the openness central to Jaar's project.

Résumé:
German photographer Olaf Holzapfel became fascinated, during a residency in Tokyo, with a "city within the city" - yellow bumps and grooves on the ground that form a guidance system for blind people walking with canes. Holzapfel contrasts photographs from the Nakano Sakaue rail station with other images of Tokyo for a photo-essay that art historian Andreas Spiegl characterizes as a "geography that ... describes perception as a territory - the view of the visible and the imaginary." This embossed hardcover blends rich color photographs, dominated by the (in)visible yellow lines that traverse Tokyo, with black-and-white images of what were originally garishly colored scenes, reinforcing the contrast between the seen and the unseen worlds of Tokyo.
