In this fourth volume, Atelier Bow-Wow delves into the window behavioural characteristics in nordic architecture, showing how climate and culture are strongly reflected in their windows. The works and influences of six architects are featured: Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz from Sweden, Alvar Aalto from Finland, and from Denmark, Kay Fisker, Arne Jacobsen and Jørn Utzon. After three years of research, the team visited about 235 works and measured 470 windows. 114 selected works are presented with photographs, detailed drawings, and analyses, examining the transformation of window technology and design, and the history and social issues of each country.

Résumé:
Designed by the architects’s themselves, this monograph is published in conjunction with an exhibition of their work at the Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine in Paris. The illustrated monograph gathers all the projects that have been designed by the office and presents them in thematic groups, such as beginnings, landscape, dreams, freedom, transformation and the city – together, these themes are woven into a story that challenges the architects’s proposals. In denying the obvious, the architects seek to emphasise what is essential and specific to each situation and context, while in turn proposing an architecture that celebrates freedom.

Based on archival, artistic, and architectural evidence, Stephen Bowd presents an innovative microhistory of a fascinating, yet historically neglected city. He shows how Brescian loyalty to Venice was repeatedly tested by a succession of disasters: assault by Milanese forces, economic downturn, demographic collapse, and occupation by French and Spanish armies intent on dismembering the Venetian empire. In spite of all these troubles the city experienced a cultural revival and a dramatic political transformation under Venetian rule, which Bowd describes and uses to illuminate the process of state formation in one of the most powerful regions of Renaissance Italy.

There is no life without water. Burtynsky's new book Water tells us the story of where water comes from, how we use it, distribute and waste it. Often using a bird's-eye perspective, the photographer shows us its remote sources, remarkable ancient step-wells and mass bathing rituals, the transformation of desert into cities with waterfronts on each doorstep, the compromised landscapes of the American Southwest. Furthermore, Burtynsky explores the infrastructure of water management: the gigantic hydroelectric dams and terraced rice fields in the heart of China, the vast irrigation systems of America's bread basket and the use of aquaculture.

In some cities, parking lots cover more than one-third of the metropolitan footprint. It’s official: we have paved paradise and put up a parking lot. In ReThinking a Lot, Eran Ben-Joseph shares a different vision for parking’s future. Parking lots, he writes, are ripe for transformation. After all, their design and function has not been rethought since the 1950s. With this book, Ben-Joseph pushes the parking lot into the twenty-first century.

Résumé:
Edited and published by the Dutch artist Jacqueline de Jong between 1962 and 1967, ''The Situationist Times'' was an exuberant, multilingual, transdisciplinary magazine that became one of the most exciting and playful publications of the 1960s. Throughout its six diverse issues, the magazine challenged the notion of what it meant to be a situationist. Contributors included Aldo Van Eyck, Asger Jorn, Max Bucaille, Pierre Alechinsky and Boris Vian; themes included ''situlogical'' patterns, labyrinths and topology. ''These Are Situationist Times!'' provides a history of the magazine, also probing its contemporary relevance and presenting the material de Jong assembled in the early 1970s for a never-realized seventh issue devoted to pinball.

Résumé:
The successful conversion and expansion of abandoned buildings and relics from the industrial past have been the mission of Atelier Deshaus from Shanghai since 2001. The question of how formerly closed industrial complexes can be transformed into new, attractive places for the public is the core theme of this exhibition. It focuses on the transformation along the Huangpu River in Shanghai, whose seamless accessibility as a public space was heralded by Expo 2010 Better City - Better Life. Aedes is showing seven projects that have used the potential of former industrial sites to bring new functions to the riverbank and to which the residents attach both emotional and cultural significance. Abandoned production sites and relics of inner-city heavy industry, warehouses, and port facilities can be a huge burden on the sustainable development of a city, especially if they are seen as waste to be disposed of. With its projects, Atelier Deshaus shows how the grey energy used in them can be preserved, at least in parts, through conversion and reconstruction, and how new functions can be assigned. In the face of climate change and the generally far too energy-hungry construction industry, it is also an obvious necessity in China to take an unbiased look at existing buildings. Nevertheless, demolition is still often the priority. Atelier Deshaus counters this with a strategy of minimal intervention that sensitively heralds the transformation of the existing buildings without destroying the historical reminders.

Résumé:
What is it about Times Square that has inspired such attention for well over a century? And how is it that, despite its many changes of character, the place has maintained a unique hold on our collective imagination? In this book, which comes twenty years after her widely acclaimed Times Square Roulette, Lynne Sagalyn masterfully tells the story of profound urban change over decades in the symbolic space that is New York City’s Times Square. Drawing on the history, sociology, and political economy of the place, ''Times Square remade'' examines how the public-private transformation of 42nd Street at Times Square impacted the entertainment district and adjacent neighborhoods, particularly Hell’s Kitchen. Sagalyn chronicles the earliest halcyon days of 42nd Street and Times Square as the nexus of speculation and competitive theater building as well as its darkest days as vice central, and on to the years of aggressive government intervention to cleanse West 42nd Street of pornography and crime. Thematically, the author analyzes the three main forces that have shaped and reshaped Times Square—theater, real estate, and pornography—and explains the politics and economics of what got built and what has been restored or preserved. Accompanied by nearly 160 images, more than half in color, ''Times Square remade'' is a deftly woven narrative of urban transformation that will appeal as much to the general reader and New York City enthusiast as to urbanists, city planners, architects, urban designers, and policymakers.
