Résumé:
In paintings, murals, and book illustrations, Aaron Douglas (1899–1979) produced the most powerful visual legacy of the Harlem Renaissance, prompting the philosopher and writer Alain Locke to dub him the “father of Black American art.” Presenting more than ninety illustrations of Douglas’s works and the commentary of leading critics and historians, this book focuses on the artist’s career from the 1920s through the 1940s in relation to American modernism. Its authors argue that Douglas’s bold work opened doors for African American artists in Harlem and beyond, and that it invited a dialogue with modernism that put African American life, labor, and freedom, along with African traditions and motifs, at its center. New information emerges from these pages, reflecting the rich interchange between the visual arts, music, dance, literature, and politics that shaped Douglas’s work and also defined the Harlem Renaissance.

Résumé:
The buildings in ''Future history'' are examples of ‘Razionalismo’, the Italian version of International Style Modernism built in the 1930s. Emerging during Mussolini’s dictatorship, Razionalismo architecture was contemporaneous and frequently indivisible in design from official fascist building, now referred to as Stile Littorio. Italian fascism and Modernism blossomed in approximately the same period, during which the fascist state engaged in a significant infrastructural and institutional building programme. Countless school, hospital, road, rail, housing, government building and redevelopment projects were realised, several of which are viewed today as noteworthy examples of Razionalismo. These projects put architecture at the service of a state equally intent on improving health and housing, making its might conspicuous domestically and colonising in Africa. The photographs in ''Future history'' are interleaved with extracts from a series of papers first published in 1926 and 1927 by Gruppo 7.

Résumé:
Pluralism, fusion and hybridity are the dominant traits of cultural change in twenty-first-century India. The resultant architecture reflects this fabric of one of the world's largest and most populous nation states. Architect, educator and author Rahul Mehrotra has been at the forefront of the Indian contemporary architecture scene for more than two decades, and Architecture in India since 1900 is his take on the topic across four themed chapters: "Global Practice: Expression of (Impatient) Capital"; "Regional Modernism"; "Alternative Practice: Towards Sustainability"; and "Counter Modernism: Resurfacing of the Ancient." Each chapter introduces exponents of these distinct genres of architectural expression, examining the work of more than 60 contemporary architects in more than 500 photographs. Architects, students, academics, architecture buffs and admirers of India's famed heritage of architectural pioneering will find this volume a rich trove of design ideas.

Résumé:
Seduced by Modernity is the first book devoted to the life and work of Canadian-born modernist photographer Margaret Watkins. Best known for art and advertising photography executed in New York in the 1920s, Watkins was active in the Clarence White school of photography and a participant in the shift from pictorialism to modernism. Mary O'Connor and Katherine Tweedie tell the story of a dedicated artist in difficult circumstances whose working life spanned a Victorian upbringing in Hamilton, Ontario, and the witnessing of the first Soviet Five-Year Plan. The authors use feminist and historical questions as well as close readings of the photographs to relate Watkins' work to questions of gender, modernity, and visual culture. Watkins' modernism, which involved experimentation and a radical focus on form, transgressed boundaries of conventional, high-art subject matter. Her focus was daily life and her photographs, whether an exploration of the objects in her New York kitchen or the public and industrial spaces of Glasgow, Paris, Cologne, Moscow, and Leningrad in the 1930s, strike a balance between abstraction and an evocation of the everyday, offering a unique gendered perspective on modernism and modernity. Seduced by Modernity makes available for the first time an extensive representation of Watkins' work in high-quality reproduction as part of an exemplary interdisciplinary study that honours an intrepid Canadian artist who refused to be confined by borders, convention, or gender.
