Premier essai de l'auteur, « Formes de vie » présente une hypothèse originale sur la naissance de la modernité artistique, et qui diffère des récits canoniques de l'histoire de l'art. Être moderne, pour les artistes du XIXe siècle, c'est intensifier son rapport au présent et faire passer l'actualité avant la tradition. Mais c'est aussi répondre à l'industrialisation naissante et à la division du travail, puis à la chaîne de montage de l'usine, modèle de cette chaîne d'images que met en place un nouvel art : le cinéma. Contre la mécanisation générale de la société, une « économie de l'existence » se développe, alternative à celle du monde capitaliste, dans laquelle la « marche improductive » du flâneur baudelairien sera rejointe par les « dérives urbaines », les actions éphémères et les relevés de l'art conceptuel ou du Land art. Ainsi l'art du XXe siècle trouve-t-il ses racines dans cette éthique moderne dont l'impératif serait : « fais de ta vie une œuvre d'art ». De monument, l'œuvre est devenue événement. Cette modernité prend ses sources dans les performances philosophiques de Diogène, dans l'exemplum des stoïciens, les expériences des alchimistes ou les protocoles ascétiques des dandies anglais. Premier essai de l'auteur, « Formes de vie » présente une hypothèse originale sur la naissance de la modernité artistique, et qui diffère des récits canoniques de l'histoire de l'art. Être moderne, pour les artistes du XIXe siècle, c'est intensifier son rapport au présent et faire passer l'actualité avant la tradition. Mais c'est aussi répondre à l'industrialisation naissante et à la division du travail, puis à la chaîne de montage de l'usine, modèle de cette chaîne d'images que met en place un nouvel art : le cinéma. Contre la mécanisation générale de la société, une « économie de l'existence » se développe, alternative à celle du monde capitaliste, dans laquelle la « marche improductive » du flâneur baudelairien sera rejointe par les « dérives urbaines », les actions éphémères et les relevés de l'art conceptuel ou du Land art. Ainsi l'art du XXe siècle trouve-t-il ses racines dans cette éthique moderne dont l'impératif serait : « fais de ta vie une œuvre d'art ». De monument, l'œuvre est devenue événement. Cette modernité prend ses sources dans les performances philosophiques de Diogène, dans l'exemplum des stoïciens, les expériences des alchimistes ou les protocoles ascétiques des dandies anglais. Les racines de l'art contemporain, on les trouve également dans la littérature : chez Balzac, Oscar Wilde, Joubert, Alfred Jarry ou Huysmans, tout aussi déterminants dans ce livre que les artistes dont l'œuvre se voit ici éclairée par la notion de « forme vécue » – de Marcel Duchamp à Sigmar Polke, en passant par Yves Klein, Joseph Beuys, Robert Filliou, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Raymond Hains, Daniel Buren ou Alighiero Boetti.
