Résumé:
The architectural awareness and experience of space, and its creative use can profit greatly from certain aspects of “games” and the related technology. Here the author investigates a fascinating contribution of avant-garde art to the construction of space in the field of electronic games and arcades, beginning with "New Babylon", moving through the radical suggestions of the 1960's and 1970's to the commercial and experimental examples of contemporary amusement arcades. Also considered are the virtual worlds of video games which are growing increasingly complex. The book reveals in a critical way how important the element of “play” has become in today’s digital architectonic designs.

The levels of the text subtly blend and play among themselves, in part thanks to the printing on grey paper of this edition of typographic illusions. jekyll & hyde is a graphic design and visual communications studio founded in Milan in 1996 by Marco Molteni and Margherita Monguzzi. Many of their projects have been praised and awarded on both a national and international level.

Résumé:
"Trading Places" rethinks, develops, and tests design-driven practices and methods to engage with participation in public space and public issues. With this book we aim to help art and design researchers, students, practitioners, and the multiple stakeholders they collaborate with, to explore what participatory ways of working in our contemporary urban environment entail. Six approaches are discussed: intervention, performative mapping, play, data mining, modelling in dialogue, and curating. Each approach offers a different kind of logic and produces a different type of knowledge. "Trading Places" invites the reader to discover common ground, explore new territories, and exchange points of view – in short, to trade perspectives on issues of participation.

Résumé:
Panama’s place in the collective imagination is frequently limited to its famous canal, exotic scenery and recent political history. Mexican photographer Arturo Soto (born 1981), however, is not interested in reproducing clichés; his work looks for unexpected traces of everyday sociopolitical life in urban spaces. With this new volume, the photographer offers a subjective vision of Panama’s urban landscape, interrogating how personal experience influences the ways one negotiates, and ultimately represents, a landscape. Capturing views of Panama’s socially stratified cities and the disparate social values at play there, Soto contradicts simple visions of progress and economic growth with a much more nuanced portrait of a place and its people.

Résumé:
''Public, Private, Secret: On Photography & the Configuration of Self'' explores the roles that photography and video play in the crafting of identity, and the reconfiguration of social conventions that define our public and private selves. Consciously framed by our present era, this collection of essays, interviews, and reflections assesses how our image-making and consumption patterns are embedded and implicated in a wider matrix of online behavior and social codes, which in turn give images a life of their own. The writings address the various disruptions, resistances, and subversions that artists propose to the limited versions of race, gender, sexuality, and autonomy that populate mainstream popular culture.

In the city there are ways to escape the grid and walk along lines unseen. The city parks of New York offer this escape, eliciting both alienation and intoxication. They allow citizens and nature both a space for growth, a second city away from eyes on the street. Adam Pape's photographs utilize the city parks in Washington Heights and Inwood as the backdrop for a narrative that unfolds in between day and night. These monochromatic images, directed by Pape and artificially lit, depict an ongoing exchange between humans, animals, and the landscape. In the furthest reach of Manhattan, sectioned off from further development, history and myth are at play.

Résumé:
The fourth edition of the Chapters series by Belgian architecture firm 51N4E proposes a fresh approach to urban design, using infrastructure as a spark for collective thinking about what we value and invest in as a society. Developed with Newrope, it blends research and practice to explore how infrastructural boundary objects – elements that both structure space and encourage new uses – can play a key role in shaping cities. Drawing on eight 51N4E projects in Central Europe and four design themes from Newrope (intimacy, pattern, performance, togetherness), the book examines how each project responds to its local context, creating spaces that are stable yet adaptable over time.

Résumé:
''Seventeen Playgrounds'' is a research project by Denisa Kollarová and Anna van Lingen on the work of the Dutch architect Aldo van Eyck (1918–1999), who designed hundreds of playgrounds in Amsterdam between the 1950s and 1970s. These playgrounds, characterised by simple metal structures and concrete elements, enabled children to develop autonomy and creativity through play. The research began as a mapping of the few surviving sites still present in Amsterdam’s cityscape, developed within the Graphic Design course at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, and was first published by Lecturis (NL) in 2015. This second edition is co-published with the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Technical University of Brno (CZ).

Photographs by Homma Takashi. Roppongi Hills is one of Japan's largest integrated property developments, located in the Roppongi district of Tokyo. Constructed by building tycoon Minoru Mori, the mega-complex incorporates office space, apartments, shops, restaurants, cafés, movie theaters, a museum, a hotel, a major TV studio, an outdoor amphitheater, and a few parks. The centerpiece is the 54-story eponymous Mori Tower. Mori's stated vision was to build an integrated development where high-rise inner-urban communities allow people to live, work, play, and shop in close proximity to eliminate commuting time. Seventeen years in the making, the complex opened to the public on april 23, 2003.
