Based on the author’s artistic research on migration, contemporary urban experience, and sonic alienation, ''The nomadic listener'' is composed of a series of texts stemming from psychogeographic explorations of contemporary cities, including Copenhagen, Berlin, Kolkata, Vienna, Delhi, Hong Kong, Mumbai and New York, among others. Each text is an act of listening, where the author records his surrounding environment and attunes to the sonic fluctuations of movement and the passing of events. What surfaces is a collection of meditations on the occurrences of life movingly interwoven with memories, associations, desires and reflections. As readers we are brought into a tender map of contemporary urban experience, and the often lonely, surprising and random interactions found in traveling.''The nomadic listener'' includes parallel drawings based on the original audio recordings, and appear as ghostly renderings of the corresponding experiences. The recordings are published by the German label Gruenrekorder and accessed through a QR code included in the book.

Résumé:
Line B. Løkken takes her point of departure in documentary strategies, but empties her pictures of obvious action. The specific place is allowed to appear through isolated objects and tableaux which represent something larger. In this publication Løkken penetrates to a backdrop of heritage and memories by way of a place that seems impregnated with human activity. The motifs appear to be linked to the idea of the humble cottage. Here there is space for potentially nostalgic bric-à-brac, but also objects with an unclear practical purpose. Løkken’s title plays on a typical spring game, and interweaves images of Scrabble, piles of chalk and an old crossword book. On the opposite face of the squares and alphabet dice of the Scrabble box (which quietly spell b-r-ø-l – “roar”) is a horn on which some tufts of grass have been caught. Maturing, aging and new freshness play together over the pages, also in tactile and colouristic ways.

Résumé:
The North is changing at an unprecedented rate as industrial development and the climate crisis disrupt not only the environment but also long-standing relationships to the land and traditional means of livelihood. This publication explores the ways in which Indigenous peoples in the Arctic have adapted to challenging circumstances, including past cultural and environmental changes. Contributors document how Indigenous communities in Alaska, northern Canada, Greenland, and Siberia are seeking ways to maintain and strengthen their cultural identity while also embracing forces of disruption. Indigenous and non-Indigenous contributors bring together oral history and scholarly research from disciplines such as linguistics, archaeology, and ethnohistory. With an emphasis on Indigenous place names, this volume illuminates how the land—and the memories that are inextricably tied to it—continue to define Indigenous identity. The perspectives presented here also serve to underscore the value of Indigenous knowledge and its essential place in future studies of the Arctic.

Résumé:
We all have memories of the object-world of childhood. For many of us, playthings and images from those days continue to resonate. Rereading a swathe of modern and contemporary artistic production through the lens of its engagement with childhood, this book blends in-depth art historical analysis with sustained theoretical exploration of topics such as surrealist temporality, toys, play, nostalgia, memory, and 20th-century constructions of the child. The result is an entirely new approach to the surrealist tradition via its engagement with “childish things.” Providing what the author describes as a “long history of surrealism,” this book plots a trajectory from surrealism itself to the art of the 1980s and 1990s, through to the present day. It addresses a range of figures from Marcel Duchamp, Giorgio de Chirico, Max Ernst, Hans Bellmer, Joseph Cornell, and Helen Levitt, at one end of the spectrum, to Louise Bourgeois, Eduardo Paolozzi, Claes Oldenburg, Susan Hiller, Martin Sharp, Helen Chadwick, Mike Kelley, and Jeff Koons, at the other.

Résumé:
The prominent architect Felix Novikov was born in 1927, when the famous Constructivist Konstantin Melnikov was at the peak of his career. Novikov tells the dramatic story of Soviet architecture, portraying the conditions he worked in and how he collaborated with the government and other participants during the creative process. He further explains how Soviet design and planning institutes were organized with reference to the Union of the Architects of the USSR and describes the creative ideals of his generation of architects, who are today identified as Soviet Modernists. As a time witness, his memories cannot be recounted in their whole complexity by historians. Novikov also describes some of the conditions that affected his own creative fate and that of others. This book reflects the characteristics of Soviet life and its connections to architects’ professional activity. Novikov’s confessions are more than that of an architect; they give a testimony to daily life in the Soviet Union from Stalin to glasnost.

Accattone #4 draws on the idea of collection to explore mythical methods and visual ethnographies in contemporary practices, with an interest in the compression, into a single artefact, of long periods of history, power relations, memories and everyday experience. It features anthropology museums, underground data centres and minor collections performed in private houses, double-sided masks and architectural strata in a floor slab or a facade, totemic mock-ups on a 1:1 scale and metaphors in the desert. Invited contributions include words and documents by Frida Escobedo, photos by Kristien Daem, Philippe Braquenier and Stefano Graziani, a return on an installation by Ištvan Išt Huzjan with Sam Steverlynck, Frank Tuytschaever and Jurgen Vergotte, our visit to Pierre Leguillon’s Museum of Mistakes and ARU’s visit to an house by Peter Märkli, an interview with 51N4E, photos of Camille Henrot’s installation The Pale Fox, essays by Cédric Libert and Freek Persyn, models and mock-ups by Bruther, XDGA, CAB, Barthélémy-Griño, Michel Desvigne.

Since its initial publication in 1958, The Poetics of Space has been a muse to philosophers, architects, writers, psychologists, critics, and readers alike. The rare work of irresistibly inviting philosophy, Bachelard’s seminal work brims with quiet revelations and stirring, mysterious imagery. This lyrical journey takes as its premise the emergence of the poetic image and finds an ideal metaphor in the intimate spaces of our homes. Guiding us through a stream of meditations on poetry, art, and the blooming of consciousness itself, Bachelard examines the domestic places that shape and hold our dreams and memories. Houses and rooms; cellars and attics; drawers, chests, and wardrobes; nests and shells; nooks and corners: No space is too vast or too small to be filled by our thoughts and our reveries. In Bachelard’s enchanting spaces, “We are never real historians, but always near poets, and our emotion is perhaps nothing but an expression of a poetry that was lost.”
