Résumé:
Architectural design is not limited by geographical, economic or political boundaries. However, the majority of the architecture brought to the world's attention tends to be concentrated in a few countries and located in the wealthier nations of Europe and North America. This "Architectural Design" title seeks to present recent architecture that is situated beyond these familiar boundaries and outside the customary centres of architectural debate. It focuses on architecture that positively benefits from being at the periphery. By presenting work from countries as diverse as Iceland, Guinea, Canada, Portugal, Chile, New Zealand and India, it highlights buildings designed to respond to climatic extremes, remote sites and a broad range of social settings. It also identifies architects who are exploring the potential of materials and limited resources. This work has not only been sought out for attention, but is documented and connected through interviews with selected architects and international contributors who are designing, researching and building at the edge.

Résumé:
While this book is primarily devoted to the historical reconstruction of the formal and horticultural characteristics of "theatrical" shrubberies and flower beds, it also aims to animate the world of the eighteenth-century pleasure ground. Mark Laird shows how the unwritten lore of planting design was passed down by generation after generation of gardeners and discusses the interaction of landscape designer, client, nurseryman, land agent, and gardener in modifying and transforming the geometric layouts of previous generations. He traces the development of planting design theory and practice from Batty Langley to Capability Brown and William Chambers, and demonstrates how an English mania for flowering shrubs and conifers from eastern North America helped create the distinctive planting forms of the Georgian pleasure ground. Laird offers readers a wealth of visual and literary materials - from contemporary paintings, engravings, poetry, essays, and letters to more prosaic household accounts and nursery bills - to revolutionize our understanding of the English landscape garden as a powerful cultural expression.

Résumé:
The architects Alfredo Brillembourg and Hubert Klumpner, over the last ten years, have developed the Caracas/Venezuela based Urban-Think Tank (UTT) into an international network to face the challenges of uncontrolled urban growth in the dense informal centers of the 21st century Mega-cities. The exhibit will include photos, videos and projects that question the notion of contemporary architecture and urbanism that pulls together some of the Urban Think Tanks most consistent propositions. UTT has moved to propose design solutions, to make that crucial passage from protest to project in an effort to make a real impact in Caracas and in Europe and North America, presenting the relevance of their ideas for the Stadtwerk in Salzburg and for a Vertical Gym in Spanish Harlem, New York. ‘Moderating Urban Density’ exhibit shows how negotiation and design can work in the interface between the social conflicts and the production of new urban infrastructures, architecture, and sustainable human environments in the so called “barrios” of the informal mega city.

Résumé:
Vancouver photographer and video artist Stan Douglas (born 1960) has been celebrated since the late 1980s for his politically freighted retrievals of obsolete technologies and failed utopias. The emphatically narrative character of his films and photographs has made for comparisons with his Vancouver contemporary Jeff Wall, but Douglas also laces his work with a literary engagement, in references to works by Proust, Beckett and other writers. This publication sees Douglas pursue a new direction. It chronicles the burgeoning discipline of press photography in North America during the postwar period, for which Douglas assumes the role of a fictional photographer, creating a series of images hypothetically produced between 1945-1951. Douglas constructed a “mid-century studio” using authentic equipment as well as actors to produce carefully staged, black-and-white photographs that painstakingly emulate the period's obsession with crime scenes, dance, gambling and technology. This volume juxtaposes actual photographs from the era with Douglas' photo-fictions.

Résumé:
Countless magazine covers in North America have responded to the reading public’s capacity for gender-diverse literacy. Gender-diverse representation in narrative forms have spread across all media platforms to become standard or even predictable in their depictions. The expressions of a gender-diverse presence therefore exist within a vast number of communities, more than ever before in history. Emerging designations for gender are more often embedded within a more inclusive, albeit challenging and complex web of shifting societal values around identity. To further capture this pivotal and seismic shift in the history of the human identity spectrum, guest editor Wayne Baerwaldt has invited lens-based visual artists and writers to reflect on their creative subject matter and their gender identity in any way they felt comfortable-through still and moving images, narrative text, collage, Instagram sites, audio, poetry, and so on. Each contributor was asked to examine the impact of their own evolving gender identity on their creative lens-based work.

Résumé:
"Bad new days" examines the evolution of art and criticism in Western Europe and North America over the last twenty-five years, exploring their dynamic relation to the general condition of emergency instilled by neoliberalism and the war on terror. Considering the work of artists such as Thomas Hirschhorn, Tacita Dean, and Isa Genzken, and the writing of thinkers like Jacques Rancière, Bruno Latour, and Giorgio Agamben, Hal Foster shows the ways in which art has anticipated this condition, at times resisting the collapse of the social contract or gesturing toward its repair; at other times burlesquing it. Against the claim that art making has become so heterogeneous as to defy historical analysis, Foster argues that the critic must still articulate a clear account of the contemporary in all its complexity. To that end, he offers several paradigms for the art of recent years, which he terms “abject,” “archival,” “mimetic,” and “precarious.”

Résumé:
When Marjorie Hill graduated in 1920 as Canada's "first girl architect," she was entering a profession that had been established in Canada just 30 years earlier. For the Record, the first history of women architects in Canada, provides a fascinating introduction to early women architects, presented within the context of developments in both Europe and North America. Profiles of the women who graduated from the School of Architecture at the University of Toronto between 1920 and 1960 are illustrated with photographs of their work and include archival material that has never before been published. The final chapter on contemporary women in architecture showcases contributions by leading women architects across the country, from Halifax to Vancouver to Iqaluit. For the Record also provides current information on schools of architecture in Canada and includes a list of other resources to encourage young women who are thinking of pursuing careers in architecture. Foreword by Eva Matsuzaki.

Partners in Design, which accompanies an exhibition opening at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in April 2016, chronicles their collaboration, placing it in the larger context of the avant-garde in New York—1930s salons where they mingled with Julien Levy, the gallerist who brought Surrealism to the United States, and Lincoln Kirstein, co-founder of the New York City Ballet; their work to help Bauhaus artists like Josef and Anni Albers escape Nazi Germany—and the dissemination of their ideas across the United States through MoMA’s traveling exhibition program. Illustrated with icons of modernist design, MoMA installation views, and previously unpublished images of the Barr and Johnson apartments—domestic laboratories for modernism, and in Johnson’s case, designed and furnished by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe—this fascinating study sheds new light on the introduction and success in North America of a new kind of modernism, thanks to the combined efforts of two uniquely discerning and influential individuals.
