The designer, author and design activist Victor J. Papanek anticipated an understanding of design as a tool for political change and social good that is more relevant today than ever. He was one of the first designers in the mainstream arena to critically question design's social and ecological consequences, introducing a new set of ethical questions into the design field. "Victor Papanek: The Politics of Design" presents an encompassing overview of Papanek's oeuvre, at the heart of which stood his preoccupation with the socially marginalized and his commitment to the interests of areas then called the Third World, as well as his involvement in the fields of ecology, bionics, sustainability and anti-consumerism.

Résumé:
The term neighborhood has been reduced to a word for a convenient geographical locator. In fact, most cities claim to be compiled of neighborhoods, but this strays far from the term's original meaning - a spatial unit that people relate to. ''Neighborhood'' seeks to dispel this common misconception by integrating a complex historical record and multidisciplinary literature to produce a singular resource for understanding what is meant by neighborhood. Emily Talen provides a multi-dimensional, comprehensive view of what neighborhoods signify how they're idealized and measured, and what their historical progression has been. Talen balances perspectives from sociology, urban history, urban planning, and sustainability among others in efforts to make neighborhoods compatible with 21st century ideals.

Never before have so many high-rises been built. Spectacular skyscrapers with landmark character are not only appearing in boom cities like Dubai and Beijing or in the USA — the high-rise is also experiencing a renaissance in Europe. No type of building generates stronger emotions, but differentiated debate on these tower blocks only began recently. It is no longer merely a question of how many meters tall, but of new qualities in the construction of high-rise buildings, e.g. energy efficiency, sustainability, and social, economic and ecological compatibility. The projects of the International Highrise Award 2008 demonstrate current developments and so present the full range of contemporary high-rise construction, from utilisation to site-specifics.

Résumé:
In this perceptive book, Myria Georgiou sets out to investigate the new configuration of social order that is taking shape in today’s cities. Although routed through extractive datafication, compulsive connectivity, and regulatory AI technologies, this digital order nonetheless displaces technocentrism and instead promotes new visions of humanism, all in the name of freedom, diversity, and sustainability. But the digital order emerges in the midst of neoliberal instability and crises, resulting in a plurality of contrasting responses to securing digitally mediated human progress. While corporate, media, and state actors mobilize such positive sociotechnical imaginaries to promise digitally mediated human progress, urban citizens and social movements propose alternative pathways to autonomy and dignity through and sometimes against digital technologies.

These innovative designs showcase diverse typologies, emphasizing functionality, sustainability, and architectural creativity. Additionally, this issue explores three transformative examples of evolving factory architecture—integrating production spaces with offices and incorporating natural elements to create healthier and more inspiring work environments. The descriptive Next Generation underlines the guiding principle behind the firms chosen for this fourth installment in the series: the majority of practices are less than five years old, and more than half of them have only been in existence for two or three years. The firms included in this edition, with a few exceptions, collectively represent the youngest firms in the four iterations of Twenty + Change. Selected by a curatorial committee from more than 160 submissions, these projects by thirteen organizations engage the public realm in meaningful ways, posit new models for collective living and urban infill, advance the role of sustainability and vernacular craft, and explore opportunities for speculative and self-initiated commissions.

Résumé:
The 2008-09 version of UCLA A.UD's SUPRASTUDIO, MEGAVOIDS, has endeavored to bring two of the main issues facing cities today to the forefront of architectural study at UCLA: future urbanism and sustainability. Neil Denari with Chris Hostetter of Toyota Motor Sales (TMS) U.S.A. and their students present the results of their study here, played out as six projects for five extremely large unoccupied sites around the greater Los Angeles area. The projects presented ask questions about city form and how transportation and urban space can work in more synchronous ways. The publication includes essays by Neil Denari, Stephen Deters, Chris Hostetter, and Jeffrey Inaba along with a selection of MEGAVOID site photos by Los Angeles photographer Benny Chan.
