Résumé:
For more than twenty years, Armin Linke has been photographing the effects of globalization, the wholesale transformation of infrastructures, and the networking of the post-industrial society via digital information and communication technologies. His photographs show that the modern world is a massive profusion of data, where the material infrastructures, consisting of computer centres, data highways, and server rooms, are largely invisible. For The Appearance of That Which Cannot Be Seen, Linke invited scientists and theoreticians to examine his picture archive. Ariella Azoulay, Bruno Latour, Peter Weibel, Mark Wigley, and Jan Zalasiewicz made a selection of images and in the process opened up Linke’s photos to a variety of different readings.

Modernisation in the 20th century has deeply transformed Japanese society, bringing economic wealth and social well-being, but also increasing divisions and specialisation in society. This transformation has been increasingly questioned in recent years, and finds expression in architectural projects. The catalogue for the Japanese Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale, curated by Momoyo Kaijima, one of the founders of Atelier Bow-Wow, this volume examines the role of architectural drawings in this reappraisal, as they form the basis on which a common approach in the design of individualised yet shared environments in today’s globalised society can be formulated. It proposes architectural ethnography as a methodology of social engagement.

Résumé:
Dutch artist and designer Lizan Freijsen examines transformation and time, in which the unwanted gains significance. She meticulously documents a form of urban nature, classifying stains in a subjective order by giving names and categories to this pervasive phenomenon of slow changes and growth processes in our everyday surroundings. Manifesting the same way in many places in the world, the stain reads like a palimpsest – a layered and partly blotted-out history of a precise spot. Freijsen’s search for traces of moisture, fungus, and decay in the public space resulted in an extensive photographic archive, which she also uses as inspiration for her textile-based practice.

The influential Slovenian curator, art critic, writer and theorist Igor Zabel (1958-2005) was largely responsible for putting the Slovenian art scene on the map during the 1990s. As Senior Curator of Ljubljana's Moderna Galerija, he established cultural links between Eastern and Western Europe, developing a unique critical perspective on the ongoing transformation of the post-Communist era. This indispensable volume both develops and creates new contexts for the theories and strategies illustrated by Zabel in his exhibitions, publications, critical writings and European exchange initiatives. It is published collaboratively by the Igor Zabel Association for Culture and Theory in Ljubljana and the Erste Foundation.

Rome, the"Eternal City", is a unique palimpsest dating back to Antiquity. However, beyond the historic center built over millennia on the famous seven hills - another Rome exists, one of large and often stunning modern neighborhoods, housing estates, schools, and public buildings. When Rome became Italy's capital in 1871, the population increased extensively and the city exceeded its boundaries since Roman times, the Aurelian Walls. This extraordinary transformation laid the foundation for many new quarters built to accommodate civil servants and rural migrants, drawing on vernacular and ancient Roman traditions and blending past and present. This book looks at Rome's evolution and architecture from the 19th century onwards.

Museums, galleries, foundations, collectors, artists, viewers--how do they all come together? How is that changing? This collection of essays and some photographs from a Cologne working group called European Kunsthalle tackles the fundamental issues facing new initiatives and institutions for contemporary art. It is divided into five topics: The Problem of Location, The Process of Societal Transformation, Cultural Economies, Curatorial Concepts, and, most ambitiously of all, The Way in Which the Art System Operates. Articles and discussion transcripts include "The Crisis of the Audience," "The Cultural Politics of Institutions," "Smuggling: A Curatorial Model," "The Power and Powerlessness of the Private Collector" and Liam Gillick's "Revised Construction of One."
