ves Maes explores his doctoral research in the arts with David Campany, jury member of his PhD committee. Focussing on the intersection of architecture and photography, Maes has designed biodegradable refugee camps, photographed the remains of world’s fairs worldwide, and recaptured his homestead memories in photographic installations. His research postulates that architecture is inherently part of the photographic medium, initiated by the camera obscura pavilion. He proposes that world’s fairs came into being precisely because of the invention of a medium that could truthfully propagate them, and describes how this, in turn, affected architectural display strategies for photography. Campany has had a long career in curating and writing about photography exhibitions, with a focus on exhibition history, scale and design, temporality, and the role of both still and moving images within the exhibition context. Together, Maes and Campany discuss their own expanded practices and a multitude of historical examples such as the Crystal Palace at London’s Great Exhibition in 1851, Charlotte Perriand’s Agriculture Pavilion for the International Exposition of Art and Technology in Modern Life in 1937, the Pepsi-Cola Pavilion for the Japan World Exposition in 1970, and Simon Starling’s 2008 Plant Room for Kunstraum Dornbirn.

In the late 1990s, three monuments -- Crab Park "Boulder," "Marker of Change," and Standing "with Courage, Strength and Pride" -- were built in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. Located within a few city blocks of one another, the monuments were grassroots initiatives that challenged the norms of civic art by claiming a place in public space for society's more vulnerable groups, and each figured in debates about many kinds of violence. "Speaking for a Long Time" offers unique insights into the creation of memorials and the multiple, often contested meanings that can be attached to them in local communities. Part 1, "Act," explores the monuments' origin stories and highlights the distinctive perspectives of their founders. Part 2, "Frame," places these narratives in the context of modern debates and theories on public space and social memory. Part 3, "Forge," returns to the Downtown Eastside to show how the resilience and agency of grassroots activists can give the socially marginalized a visible presence in our urban landscapes. This vivid account of the creation of memory-scapes in a marginalized community asks us to reconsider what constitutes public art that will "speak for a long time."

Michael Wolf is best known for his large-size architectural shots from Hong Kong and Chicago. Actually the series “Architecture of Density” and “The Transplant City” are part of a constantly growing oeuvre which deals with the conditions of the modern urban life under the title “Life in Cities”. With his recently published book “Tokyo Compression”, which shows depressing impressions from the subway system in Tokyo, the photographer raises the question: In how far may, should or must photographers deal with the public today? Michael Wolf takes up this topic in his work “Street View”, which has been started at the same time as “Tokyo Compression”, and reinterprets the genre of the street photography in a highly unconventional way by using the almost inexhaustible picture pool of the Google Tool as basic material for his own images. With the camera in front of the screen he gets “his” images out of the automatically generated, authorless Google screens. Extreme details and geographical fade-ins of the software, which usually should serve the orientation, induce photographs which have an irritating as well as alarming effect like the underground portraits from Tokyo.
