Résumé:
In a daring act of historical reconstruction, the curator Germano Celant, in dialogue with Thomas Demand and Rem Koolhaas, has recreated Harald Szeemann’s epochal Live in Your Head: When Attitudes Become Form, held at the Bern Kunsthalle in 1969, and installed by Celant at the magnificent Ca’ Corner della Regina in Venice in June–November 2013. Szeemann’s show was a dialogue with the Bern Kunsthalle, and Celant has reprised its spirit by placing the works in dialogue with the Ca’ Corner della Regina--a very different building, in its Venetian grandeur, to the Kunsthalle.

Résumé:
Despite the fact that he shaped Venice and its contemporary form, Eugenio Miozzi remains a little-known figure. Yet both locals and visitors experience his legacy every day, in particular when they cross his bridges: from the Ponte della Libertà, to the Ponte dell’Accademia; from the various bridges over the Rio Nuovo, to the exemplary Ponte degli Scalzi. Miozzi, chief engineer of the Commune of Venice from 1931 to 1954, carried out a large number of works and projects, including a vast modernist parking garage and the Casino on the Lido. The prolific engineer-architect played a role in the development of the Teatro La Fenice, made plans for the restoration of the city and the extension of the Tronchetto, and designed a translagoon road and a motorway from Venice to Munich. These projects and the others presented in this illustrated volume represent Miozzi’s tireless efforts to guarantee the city’s survival by combining its centuries-old traditions with a spirit of innovation.

Résumé:
The church of San Marco of Venice has long played a central role in Venetian political, ceremonial, and religious life. Its renowned assemblage of mosaics, sculpture, metalwork, and reliquaries are, in origin, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, or Venetian imitation of Byzantine designs. In San Marco, Byzantium, and the Myths of Venice, the authors assess the significance of the embellishment of the church and its immediate surroundings, especially during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, when most of the Byzantine material was acquired, largely from Constantinople. The church and its decoration are studied in relation to Venice’s interests abroad and on mainland Italy. The authors address the diverse styles, sources, meanings, and significance of this art, both individually and as an ensemble. Building upon developments in scholarship since Otto Demus’s masterly studies of the church, the book offers new insights into the inspiration, purposes, and mutability of San Marco and the myths that inspired and motivated Venetians.

Résumé:
By way of actions, films, installations, operas, theater pieces, television broadcasting, and teaching, Christoph Schliegensief produced work that boldly addressed contemporary culture and politics, particularly within Germany. Schlingensief’s death in the summer of 2010, which occurred as he was planning the German Pavilion for the 54th Venice Biennale, shifted the course of the 2011 program. Instead of presenting elements of Schlingensief’s project, Festspielhaus Afrika, which initiated the first “opera village,” curator Susanne Gaensheimer has developed a program and accompanying catalogue that pays tribute to one of Germany’s most radical, experimental, and progressive voices. With contributions from over thirty internationally renowned curators, artists, critics, theorists, directors, and practitioners.
