Résumé:
This in-depth exploration of celebrated French artist François Morellet (1926–2016) showcases his diverse oeuvre, famous for infusing systematic and rigorous experimentation with humor and playfulness. Morellet’s interest in kinetic and optical effects spurred work that engages viewers’ perception and participation, ensuring an element of chance within his predetermined systems and challenging the convention of the artistic genius. This book features new scholarship by an international group of renowned art historians and curators. Essays explore topics such as the conceptual stakes of Morellet’s practice, the influence of Brazilian geometric abstraction and the Islamic decorative tradition, and the role of humor in his work.

Résumé:
Ever since anthropology has existed as a discipline, anthropologists have thought about architectural forms. This book provides the first overview of how anthropologists have studied architecture and the extraordinarily rich thought and data this has produced. With a focus on domestic space - that intimate context in which anthropologists traditionally work - the book explains how anthropologists think about public and private boundaries, gender, sex and the body, the materiality of architectural forms and materials, building technologies and architectural representations. Each chapter uses a broad range of case studies from around the world to examine from within anthropology what architecture 'does' - how it makes people and shapes, sustains and unravels social relations.

Résumé:
This publication, co-published with Ukrainian platform CANactions, brings together wide-ranging essays on the subject of post-war reconstruction. Produced in the light of the current invasion of Ukraine, it covers a spectrum of historical examples and geographic contexts to navigate the challenges and opportunities that define post-war reconstruction and war-related issues within the field of architecture. Considering urban planning, education, building materials, and innovative spatial relations, it centres around the human experience of the built environment in the aftermath of war. With a preface by editor Bohdan Kryzhanovsky, this reader presents theoretical and practical explorations of an urgently timely topic, offering a basis for wider conversation as well as a handbook of ideas for architects and planners and a pragmatic guide for shaping the future of Ukrainian cities.

Résumé:
Most of the world's population now lives in cities. So if we are to address the problems of environmental deterioration and peak oil adequately, the city has to be a major focus of attention. EcoCities is about re-building cities and towns based on ecological principles for the long term sustainability, cultural vitality and health of the Earth's biosphere. Unique in the literature is the book's insight that the form of the city really matters - and that it is within our ability to change it, and crucial that we do. Further, that the ecocity within its bioregion is comprehensible and do-able, and can produce a healthy and potentially happy future. EcoCities describes the place of the city in evolution, nature and history. It pays special attention to the key question of accessibility and transportation, and outlines design principles for the ecocity. The reader is encouraged to plunge in to its economics and politics: the kinds of businesses, planning and leadership required. The book then outlines the tools by which a gradual transition to the ecocity could be accomplished. Throughout, this new edition is generously illustrated with the author's own inspired visions of what such rebuilt cities might actually look like.

Résumé:
The laws of thermodynamics—and their implications for architecture—have not been fully integrated into architectural design. Architecture and building science too often remain constrained by linear concepts and methodologies regarding energy that occlude significant quantities and qualities of energy. This publication addresses this situation by providing a clear overview of what energy is and what architects can do with it. Building on the emergy method pioneered by systems ecologist Howard T. Odum, the authors situate the energy practices of architecture within the hierarchies of energy and the thermodynamics of the large, non-equilibrium, non-linear energy systems that drive buildings, cities, the planet and universe.

Résumé:
The direct and indirect influence of politics is making it increasingly clear that exhibitions have an inherent political dimension. This “Exhibition Politics” issue reveals the often conflicting interests that collide in the exhibition space and analyzes how institutions in particular react to an increasingly intense situation with symbolic and real political actions. Its dual focus examines, on the one hand, the visual regimes and mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion that manifest themselves within the exhibition space and, on the other hand, the concrete debates about culture cuts and the question of how aspects of the Israel-Palestine conflict can be addressed in the exhibition space in the wake of October 7th.

Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia was a unique experiment with progressive social forms that were matched by specific urban and spatial development. Since the end of the 1960’s until the country’s disintegration in the 1990’s is a period of ambiguity. Following a specific architectural typology, this book delves into this period which brought along social and economic changes. It focuses on the sports and shopping centre Koteks Gripe in Split and similar architectural complexes in Sarajevo, Novi Sad, and Prishtina - all designed by the Sarajevo based architect Živorad Jankovic and associates - gradually expanding towards broader considerations of the architectural practice, contention and coalescence within the Yugoslav modernist project.

Résumé:
An early advocate of color photography, Joel Meyerowitz has impacted and influenced generations of artists. For fifty-eight years, the master photographer has documented the United States’ ever-changing social landscape. During the late 1960s, Meyerowitz carried two cameras: one loaded with monochrome stock, the other with color. Just how, when, and why American fine art photographers switched from black-and-white image-making, prized within the gallery system, to color photography, once seen as the preserve of tourist photography, has been the cause of much debate. In ''Joel Meyerowitz: A Question of Color'', Meyerowitz tells the story of his early days as a photographer when he was told that serious photographers took black-and-white pictures. “But why,” he asked, “when the world is in color?” He then bought a color camera and various rolls of film and began to experiment with color techniques: a passion he continues to pursue.

Résumé:
This book brings together the Palabrarmas series by the Chilean-born artist, poet and activist Cecilia Vicuña (born 1948). Images of these works - each a powerful juxtaposition of color, poetry and politics - appear alongside new essays and historical references chosen with the artist. Palabrarmas, a neologism that translates to "word weapons" or "word arms," imagine new ways of seeing language. Taking the form of collages, silkscreens, drawings, poems, fabric banners, cutouts, mixed-media installations and street actions, Vicuña’s Palabarmas bring together her work in poetry, activism, and visual art. Each one unpacks and deconstructs single words to reveal other words hiding within them, allowing new meanings to emerge.

Résumé:
"A shadow of a man in the mirror" present stills taken from the 1934 experimental film "Hands" captioned with 'subtitles' created using image-to-text software. The captioning program, NeuralTalk, is one of the first machine vision models designed to write sentences that describe images' contents rather than simply identifying the objects present within them. This book exposes the limits of object recognition technologies; the inaccurate outcomes make explicit the unstable relation between images and what they are deemed to represent. An accidental poetry often arises from the erratic space of the machine.
