Through other inquiries -- particularly into the role of movement in such different situations as Versailles, and Chiswick or along modern highways – “The Afterlife of Gardens” provides a fresh approach to the study of designed landscapes that goes beyond their production and into how they exist and are understood by their users. In this ambitious new book the author shows how the complete history of a garden must extend beyond the moment of its design and the aims of the designer to record its subsequent reception. He raises questions about the preservation of historical sites, and provides lessons for the contemporary designer, who may perhaps be more attentive to the life of a work after its design and implementation. This book will interest all who have a professional interest in gardens, as well as the wide general audience for gardens and landscapes of past and present.

In essays that focus on buildings and spaces unique to the U.S. landscape, Clay Lancaster, Edward T. Price, John Michael Vlach, and Warren E. Roberts reconstruct the social and cultural contexts of the modern bungalow, the small-town courthouse square, the shotgun house of the South, and the log buildings of the Midwest. Surveying the buildings of America's settlement, scholars including Henry Glassie, Norman Morrison Isham, Edward A. Chappell, and Theodore H. M. Prudon trace European ethnic influences in the folk structures of Delaware and the houses of Rhode Island, in Virginia's Renish homes, and in the Dutch barn widely repeated in rural America. Ethnic, regional, and class differences have flavored the nation's vernacular architecture. Fraser D. Neiman reveals overt changes in houses and outbuildings indicative of the growing social separation and increasingly rigid relations between seventeenth-century Virginia planters and their servants. His practice is an act of mutual formation, an ongoing collaboration between himself and nature, which is, in his regard, the only real architect. This first book in Dongola’s Architecture Series, a platform to publish multi-layered readings of conversations with Arab architects working across the region's contemporary landscapes. Ammar Khammash’s work in building, painting, sculpture and music, together with his social, geological and botanical research break and intersect with every possible disciplinary mold in favor of an ongoing momentum of production and dissemination of knowledge. His practice is an act of mutual formation, an ongoing collaboration between himself and nature, which is, in his regard, the only real architect. Rather than package the practice, this book aims to reveal associations, untangle connections, and trace wandering threads. In exploring these various processes of formation – material, intellectual, and otherwise – this book works to offer a reading of architecture that draws on experimentation, context sensitivity and cultural introspection as main foundations.

In this book author and architect André Tavares explores the notion of fishing architecture, a concept coined to describe architectural practices that are spawned by fisheries. To encompass the scope of fishing architecture, and to establish the connections between marine ecology and architectural practice, the book oscillates between different continents, centuries, and species. Fisheries are unique, and this book sheds light on that uniqueness through an articulated narrative and a wealth of iconography. Up until now there has been no history of architecture from the perspective of fish, although there are counterparts for meat, timber, oil, and many other industries. Tavares provides a counternarrative to the traditional history of marine environments, which tends to focus on water ecosystems, and instead forms a bridge between what happens at sea and what happens on land. The hope is that, after reading this book, readers will better understand life in the sea in relation to urban growth and terrestrial landscapes.
