Résumé:
The modernist architect Le Corbusier’s Capitol Complex at Chandigarh, India, remains one of the major touchstones of 20th-century architecture. Commissioned by the government of India after gaining independence, the complex of brutalist concrete structures has become a pilgrimage site for architecture lovers and scholars for the past six decades. These structures have been photographed many times, but the Japanese photographer Yoshihiro Makino takes a different approach. Instead of documenting the buildings in typical fashion, the photographs become meditations on the intentions of the project, and of Le Corbusier’s architectural philosophy. Composed of two accordion-folded books in a cloth slipcase, Makino and revered art director Tamotu Yagi create a double-sided visual experience revealing on the front side of the accordion books an explosion of saturated color exteriors and interiors, then on the backsides details and rarely seen rooms in lush black & white.

Résumé:
In this book the author offers a critical, philosophical, and historical inquiry into the characteristics and consequences of this consumer subculture. For Azuma, one of Japan’s leading public intellectuals, otaku culture mirrors the transformations of postwar Japanese society and the nature of human behavior in the postmodern era. He traces otaku’s ascendancy to the distorted conditions created in Japan by the country’s phenomenal postwar modernization, its inability to come to terms with its defeat in the Second World War, and America’s subsequent cultural invasion. More broadly, Azuma argues that the consumption behavior of otaku is representative of the postmodern consumption of culture in general, which sacrifices the search for greater significance to almost animalistic instant gratification.

From the earliest scratches on stone and bone to the languages of computers and the internet, "A History of Writing" offers a fascinating investigation into the origin and development of writing throughout the world. Commencing with the first stages of information storage, Fischer focuses on the emergence of complete writing systems in Mesopotamia in the fourth millennium BC. He documents the rise of Phoenician and its effect on the Greek alphabet, generating the many alphabetic scripts of the West. Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean and Japanese writing systems are dealt with in depth, as is writing in pre-Columbian America. Also explored are Western Europe's medieval manuscripts and the history of printing, leading to the innovations in technology and spelling rules of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Résumé:
This book presents a detailed history of Katsura, the seventeenth-century imperial palace in Kyoto, Japan, that is a pivotal work of Japanese architecture. First revealed to the modern architectural world by Bruno Taut, the great German architect, in the early twentieth century, Katsura stunned and then excited the architectural community of the West. Le Corbusier and Walter Gropius, pillars of the modernist establishment, were fascinated by Katsura`s "modernity." They saw in its orthogonal and modular spaces, devoid of decoration, clear parallels to contemporary modernism, going so far as to proclaim Katsura a "historical" example of modernity. This book documents the palace in detail, combining newly commissioned photographs, detailed drawings, archival material and historical analysis. Essays by Francesco Dal Co, Walter Gropius, Arata Isozaki, Manfred Speidel, Kenzo Tange and Bruno Taut.

A showcase of the current culture and architecture, protagonists and ideas, and treatments and aims of twenty-first-century wellbeing. One of life’s greatest pleasures is a day spent rejuvenating the body and nourishing the spirit. Humans have practiced self-care for centuries- in the sweat lodges of the American Southwest, Roman baths, the hammams of the Ottoman Empire, Japanese onsens, and Finnish saunas. Today, a new interest in self-care is redefining how we accomplish wellness, and there have never been more options. In our increasingly switched-on lives, a growing industry of highly choreographed experiences is geared to help us switch off. ''Be well'' is a journey around the world’s most extraordinary spaces for achieving this, looking at the innovative practices they offer and how to carry them into everyday life.

Résumé:
During a three-month residency in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, Japanese-born, London-based artist and filmmaker Naoko Takahashi confronted the issues of dislocation, mistranslation and gender politics in the Arab world. In this chapbook, written in the style of a factual report, she takes the reader on a breathless journey through the air-conditioned rooms and arid streets of the modern Arab metropolis, where she feels that every move she makes is misread and that her identity is repeatedly forced upon her and manipulated in ways she cannot control. Takahashi’s work highlights the ambiguities and confusions of identities as played out through language in a multi-cultural, multi-lingual society. Moving from confusion and isolation to anger in the course of the book, she casts her experiences as a modern allegory of alienation. Part of Book Works Chapbook Series.
