Résumé:
This issue features the Swiss architecture firm known as EMI, established in 2005 by architects Ron Edelaar, Elli Mosayebi, and Christian Inderbitzin. Their works span exhibitions, refurbishments, new buildings, and urban planning, but housing remains their primary interest as they examine and reinterpret the small-scale components that contribute to human agency and enjoyment within a dwelling. The 21 projects featured here range from gardens and landscapes to villas and high-rises. In all of them, EMI embeds rational design choices with notions of poetry, as evidenced in the Brüggliäcker Housing Complex in Zurich, Stockmattstrasse Townhouses in Baden, and others.

Begun in 2013, Serra's "Reversal "drawings employ two identical rectangular sheets of paper that are adjoined in a vertical or horizontal format, with the black and white areas reversing themselves proportionally top to bottom (or left to right).

Résumé:
"Hudson Modern" surveys this emerging domestic architecture, featuring nearly twenty houses that integrate with site and region through composition, scale, and materials, and which strike a balance between innovation and rootedness. A reconstructed midcentury house accented in cedar, walnut, and bluestone by Joel Sanders and landscaped by the late Diana Balmori blurs the edge of habitation and nature. KieranTimberlake revises the classic vision of a glass box by cladding a home on a rocky site in Pound Ridge in a tapestry of steel, aluminum, copper, and glass. In Rhinebeck, Steven Holl experiments with a radical form that has both ecological and social dimensions.

Résumé:
In its architectural practice, Elemental responds to an awareness of the intervention context, the socio-cultural and economic dimension, and the recognition of the necessities and eventual deficiencies present. Examining the elementary way this Chilean collective approaches subjects is the focus of this issue. Developing works of very different scales, from individual dwellings to intervention studies at the urban scale, or even provincial planning, founder and Pritzker Prize winner Alejandro Aravena and his team clearly have their origins in South American architecture, yet also show an increasingly socially-engaged and global dimension: simplicity, perpetuality, efficiency, and utility.

Résumé:
New challenges on a global scale have forced a rethinking about the way homes and communities are designed. This book provides an engaging and in-depth analysis of possible solutions, providing hope for the future. Broadly speaking these challenges came in three ways: environmental, social, and economic. The challenges posed by climate change demand urgent consideration and response. But a change in methodology and the ingenious employment of technological advances offers solutions to these challenges. It provides important examples of ways to meet the global challenges by using innovative concepts and practices, leading to a transformation of how residences will appear in the years to come.

Résumé:
Alexander Calder (1898–1976) famously transposed modernist visual abstraction into three-dimensional space, initially doing so in the context of European abstract artists such as Mondrian. In 1933, leaving Paris for his native United States, he settled in an old farmhouse in Roxbury, Connecticut, where the forms of nature became a new source of inspiration for his creativity. By the summer of 1934, Calder was producing his first outdoor sculptures. His monumental standing mobile "The Tree" (1966) exemplifies this new tension between abstraction and figuration. This volume, published for an exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler, tracks Calder’s evolution away from geometric abstraction and toward large-scale biomorphism via the tree motif.
