Résumé:
Published for the first time in 1945, in the middle of Veronesi’s researches about abstract cinema and photography, the quality of its graphics and teaching aspects remains undimmed. In the first part of the book the three primary colours and their complementary are associated to everyday objects, while the second part, more suitable to Veronesi’s “abstract rationalism”, is dedicated to overlapping colours, and creates pages that have become real painting masterpieces. Luigi Veronesi (Milan, 1908-1998) always thought art as an instrument that involves all the aspects of the aesthetic experience, and investigated its relationship with the age of mechanization. Famous for his colour transpositions of music scores, he was a member of the MAC (Movement for Concrete Art) and one of the most "european" among Italian abstract painters. He also was one of the first authors to use photography in childrens’ books.

Résumé:
In recent years, the rise of research-creation--a scholarly activity that considers art practices as research methods in their own right--has emerged from the organic convergences of the arts and interdisciplinary humanities, and it has been fostered by universities wishing to enhance their public profiles. In this publication, Natalie Loveless draws on diverse perspectives--from feminist science studies to psychoanalytic theory, as well as her own experience advising undergraduate and graduate students--to argue for research-creation as both a means to produce innovative scholarship and a way to transform pedagogy and research within the contemporary neoliberal university. Championing experimental, artistically driven methods of teaching, researching, and publication, research-creation works to render daily life in the academy more pedagogically, politically, and affectively sustainable, as well as more responsive to issues of social and ecological justice.

As a passionate teacher of architecture for many years, Annette Spiro has pondered this question extensively. Her aim has always been to spark students’ enthusiasm and creativity, while at the same time teaching them to cultivate expertise and attention to detail in their research and design. In six sections, "How to Begin?" spotlights the various aspects and influences that come into play in students’ first year of coursework. Assembling three of Spiro’s lectures, interviews with students, and weekly exercises, this volume also includes a comprehensive glossary delineating key ideas and theses in architecture, as well as a logbook of supplementary events and publications that contribute to shaping the first year of studies in architecture.

Résumé:
After completing an apprenticeship in lithography, Armin Hofmann (born 1920) began teaching his own typographic principles at the Basel School of Design in 1947. He and his collegues who contributed to the development of Swiss international Style, advocated a belief in absolute and universal graphic expres-sion. Hofmann has also taught at Yale and the Philadelphia Museum School of the Arts. In 1965 he wrote the «Graphic Design Manual», which is regarded as a fundamental work in the field of modern graphic design and art. "Poster Collection 07" gathers the most important posters of Armin Hofmann, and shows them – corresponding to his fundamental importance as a graphic design teacher – in a context with works from his most famous students, who continued his methods, as there are Nelly Rudin, Karl Gerstner, Pierre Mendell, Klaus Oberer, Gérard Ifert and others.

Résumé:
This book contains the first English-language translation of Propeadeutic Contribution to the Teaching of Architecture Theory (1957), a seminal text, published in Portuguese by the Italo-Brazilian Bo Bardi. It is arguably the first published writing on architecture theory by a practicing woman architect. Accompanying the translation is an introductory essay that interprets Bo Bardi’s text as a critical and constructive theory of architecture built from a collection of textual and visual artifacts. This translation clearly renders Bo Bardi’s work in English, and contextualizes it theoretically, taking into account the specific historical sources and contemporaneous discourses from which it draws. With comparisons to other important architectural pedagogies and theoretical texts of the period, it is also an inquiry into the nature of architecture history and theory, its role in education and its relation to practice.

Résumé:
This book is the first extended study of the life and work of German-born Venezuelan artist Gertrude Goldschmidt (1912–94), known as Gego. In locating the artist’s contribution to postwar art and her important place in the global conversations around modernity, Mónica Amor explores her intermedial practice as a model of cultural complexity at the ''edge of modernity.'' In situating Gego’s work alongside other local archives and against her European education and global reception, Amor offers a monographic model that complicates traditional approaches to history. She investigates the full range of Gego’s work, including her furniture workshop, her teaching at schools of architecture and design, her seminal reticuláreas, and her lesser-known prints. Through rigorous archival research, formal analysis, theoretical relevance, and deep exploration of historical context, this essential book unpacks Gego’s radical recasting of the modern sculptural project through her engagement with architecture, craft, and design pedagogy.

Résumé:
Founded by architect Walter Gropius (1883–1969) in 1919, the Bauhaus was the 20th century’s most influential school of art, architecture, and design. After the school was shuttered under pressure from the Nazis in 1933, many Bauhaus artists brought their innovative practices and teaching methods to the United States. Gropius himself accepted a position at Harvard, where he would help establish a collection of Bauhaus material that has since grown to more than 30,000 objects—the largest such collection outside Germany. Harvard in turn became an unofficial center for the Bauhaus in America. Written by established and emerging voices in the field, the scholarship presented here expands on the special link between the two institutions, while highlighting understudied aspects of the Bauhaus, such as weaving, photography, and art made by women. Accompanied by illustrations—some of never-before-published objects—this book yields fascinating insights for Bauhaus devotees and design aficionados.

Résumé:
Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, wall charts were a familiar classroom component, displaying scientific images at a large scale, in full color. But it's only now that they've been superseded as a teaching tool that we have begun to realize something their ubiquity hid: they are stunning examples of botanical art at its finest. This illustrated book gives the humble wall chart its due, reproducing more than two hundred of them in dazzling full color. Each wall chart is accompanied by captions that offer accessible information about the species featured, the scientists and botanical illustrators who created it, and any particularly interesting or innovative features the chart displays. And gardeners will be pleased to discover useful information about plant anatomy and morphology and species differences. We see lilies and tulips, gourds, aquatic plants, legumes, poisonous plants, and carnivorous plants, all presented in exquisite, larger-than-life detail.
