Résumé:
Doug Rickard’s A New American Picture offers a startling and fresh perspective on American street photography. While at first glance the work looks reassuringly familiar and well within the traditional bounds of the genre, Rickard’s methodology is anything but conventional. All of the images are appropriated from Google Street View; over a period of two years, Rickard took advantage of the technology platform’s comprehensive image archive to virtually drive the unseen and overlooked roads of America - bleak places that are forgotten, economically devastated and abandoned. With an informed and careful eye, Rickard finds and decodes these previously photographed scenes of urban and rural decay. He rephotographs the machine-made images as they appear on his computer screen, framing and freeing them from their technological origins.

Carlos Bunga: Inhabit the Contradiction is an extensive monograph devoted to the work of Carlos Bunga, published in conjunction with his eponymous exhibition presented at CAM – Gulbenkian. The book contains notes by the exhibition curator and catalogue editor, Rui Mateus Amaral, who introduces readers to the exhibition project, providing an in-depth account of its genesis and development, focusing on the dialogue between Bunga's work and selected pieces from the CAM collection. The notes describe both Bunga's new and existing works, as well as their configuration within the space, with the intention of opening up multiple points of access to the exhibition, leaving room for individual interpretation. Designed by as ilhas studio, the catalogue also contains new essays by various authors written especially for the occasion—Rina Carvajal, Roland Groenenboom, Omar Kholeif, November Paynter, and Catarina Rosendo—each offering an in-depth look at salient aspects of the artist's multifaceted practice.

Pivot is a new peer-reviewed graduate academic interdisciplinary journal involving the Departments of Art History, Studio Arts and Communication Studies. The Journal is produced out of Concordia University, which presents a unique site for the exploration of interdisciplinarity within the humanities, where the disciplines of Art History, Studio Arts and Communication Studies are continually negotiating shared and divided scholarly territories. Taking our cue from journals that combine art making and academic writing, such as Afterall and LTTR, Pivot recognizes art production as a site for scholarly exploration, and accepts content in the form of academic papers, artist project descriptions, short texts by artists, and image based proposals. Pivot’s unique print format reflects this dual engagement by combining book arts practice with academic journal production.

By highlighting specific creative approaches and studying the sites and collective platforms that enable these practices, this book examines the critical mass that has gathered across generations of African image-makers and lens-based artists. In accentuating different perspectives within this generation and considering the infrastructures that often link them, Recent Histories provides a point of entry to engage critically with current practices, and opens up considerations about how to conceptualize the frameworks of contemporary African photography and video art. Recent Histories features the work of Edson Chagas, Mimi Cherono Ng’ok, Andrew Esiebo, Em’kal Eyongakpa, François- Xavier Gbré, Simon Gush, Délio Jasse, Lebohang Kganye, Sabelo Mlangeni, Mame-Diarra Niang, Dawit L. Résumé:
Architect, designer, writer, skier, racing driver and stunt pilot, Carlo Mollino placed photography in a wholly privileged role in the pantheon of his languages and interests. He used it at a means of expression, producing works that were both classical and experimental, and as a fundamental instrument for the documentation of his work and his daily life. From a theoretical point of view, he provided an important impulse to the historic and aesthetic study of this means, contributing to its transition into the system of art. With over 450 illustrations, this book fully investigates the relationship between Mollino and photography, from his first architectural shots to the Polaroids of his later years, placing him within the history of the discipline.

Résumé:
Collectively referred to by the word tsuchi, earthy materials such as soil and clay are prolific in Japanese contemporary art. Highlighting works of photography, ceramics, and installation art, Bert Winther-Tamaki explores the many aesthetic manifestations of tsuchi and their connection to the country’s turbulent environmental history, investigating how Japanese artists have continually sought a passionate and redemptive engagement with earth. By focusing on the role of tsuchi as a convergence point for a wide range of creative practices, this book offers a critical reassessment of contemporary art in Japan and its intrinsic relationship to the environment. Situating art within the context of ecology and urbanization, this volume shows artists striving to explore and reprocess raw forms of earth beneath the corruptions of human activity.

The Power of Process sets out the importance of Michael Pearson and his work, from his initial work within the family firm, his teaching and presidency of the Architectural Association, to small-scale artists’ studios and large-scale hospital planning, to the first thorough appreciation of Burne House, his most important work. The title refers to Michael Pearson’s abiding concern for ‘process’ in modern architecture — that is, how the conception and making of architecture is driven by information systems, the inter-connectedness between a buildings use, how it is manufactured and, importantly how its use can adapt and change over time. As such, his interest in process puts him at the forefront of the British High-Tech architecture, more famously associated with Richard Rogers and Norman Foster.

Résumé:
Agnes Martin’s (1912–2004) celebrated grid paintings are widely acknowledged as a touchstone of postwar American art and have influenced many contemporary artists. Martin’s formative years, however, have been largely overlooked. In this revelatory study of Martin’s early artistic production, Christina Bryan Rosenberger demonstrates that the rapidly evolving creative processes and pictorial solutions Martin developed between 1940 and 1967 define all her subsequent art. Beginning with Martin’s initiation into artistic language at the University of New Mexico and concluding with the reception of her grid paintings in New York in the early 1960s, Rosenberger offers vivid descriptions of the networks of art, artists, and information that moved between New Mexico and the creative centers of New York and California in the postwar period. She also documents Martin’s exchanges with artists including Ellsworth Kelly, Barnett Newman, Georgia O’Keeffe, Ad Reinhardt, and Mark Rothko, among others. Rosenberger uses original analysis of Martin’s art, as well as a rich array of archival materials, to situate Martin’s art within the context of a dynamic historical moment. With a lively, innovative approach informed by art history and conservation, this fluidly written book makes a substantial contribution to the history of postwar American art.

Résumé:
This series of precisely-crafted images began in 2016, with Hayden's move to Europe. Photographing instinctively, Hayden touches the well-worn grooves of contemporary image culture: from the intersection of photography with semiotics, the inferred distortion of narrative through sequencing photographs together, and how everyday objects can become icons simply by being photographed. Hayden's visual lexicon is akin to one of design; forms and their thingness are collapsed in on the photographic plane, becoming shapes that dance, as much a game of memory and fun as a loftier space of visual poetry. Hayden's title, ''Notwithstanding'', also speaks to the indeterminate and the inarticulable within his photographs. Images that often describe something simple – a dog, a ball, a boat on a lake, or an orange in a bowl – can feel curiously other, despite themselves, or in spite of their clear referents. Hayden quotes photographic genres with a laconic wit: from the Ghirrian coolness of early postmodern colour photography, to the sanitised language of advertising and commercial image-making, and through compositions that harmonise in both their immediate accessibility and their inherent unknowability.

Résumé:
Apart from photography, Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto has been working in sculpture, performing arts and architecture for more than 20 years. Since the early 2010s, he has been constructing the Enoura Observatory, and with his singular vision he has brought together ancient and contemporary Japanese traditions in one art and architectural complex. This book provides an account of this stunning multidisciplinary project. The Observatory, part of the artist's Odawara Art Foundation, is sited on a hilly area covered with citrus trees in Odawara, nestled against the outer rim of the Hakone Mountains and overlooking Sagami Bay. Odawara is home to groups of artisans with mastery of sophisticated techniques that have been handed down for centuries. Sugimoto has constructed the Enoura Observatory using these techniques, which are growing increasingly difficult to preserve. He envisions it as a forum for disseminating art and culture both within Japan and to the rest of the world. The stunning photographs in ''Enoura Observatory: Land of Distant Memories" reveal Sugimoto's poetic vision for this total work of art that is the culmination of his art practice.
