Résumé:
Good design has the power to influence and support the human healing process. Because recovery is a process rather than a static state, it requires transitional spaces that foster transformation and facilitate social interaction. In this context, space does not merely serve as a form of complementary medicine; it is an environment with an agency of its own. Often, it is only the absence of health that prompts us to truly examine it. This was the case for Charles Jencks, who, following his wife’s cancer diagnosis, laid the foundations for the therapy centres named after Maggie Keswick Jencks. Jencks described the first Maggie’s Centre, which opened 20 years ago in Edinburgh, as an “architecture of hope”. Similarly, Roger S. Ulrich, most recently a professor of architecture in Sweden, investigated the impact of nature on health in the mid-1980s while facing his own illness. His personal experience of nature’s restorative power led him to publish the seminal study that underpins all subsequent design approaches within the field of “healing architecture”. This issue presents exemplary special-purpose buildings from the healthcare sector that achieve exactly this. The mental health clinic by C. F. Møller in London, Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter’s healthcare centre in Copenhagen, and the Children’s Hospital in Zurich by Herzog & de Meuron are contrasted with smaller-scale pilot projects, such as the health kiosks designed by Pasel-K Architects as rural primary care infrastructure in Thüringen. Healing, it seems, knows no scale. The complex correlations between architecture and life are far from fully understood. As a young discipline, this field of architecture remains in constant flux.

Résumé:
The sixteenth instalment of the ‘Contemporary Architect’s Concept Series’ takes the delicately structured work of Japanese visual artist and architect Ryuji Nakamura as its theme. Nakamura’s often room-filling installations are formed by regular patterns of lines that play with perceptions of scale, and are occasionally so thin as to almost disappear into the space around them. Filled with fascinating objects, structures and images, the book accompanies each project with short, contemplative texts by Nakamura that set forth an array of queries into the nature of structure, form, variation and spatiality. A captivating look at the complexity and depth of lines in architecture.

Résumé:
Victor Lundy (born 1923) is an important yet underappreciated figure in the history of American architecture. Trained in both the Beaux Arts and Bauhaus traditions, he built an impressive practice ranging from small-scale residential and commercial buildings to expressive religious buildings and two preeminent institutional works: the US Tax Court Building in Washington, DC (now on the National Register of Historic Places), and the US Embassy in Sri Lanka. This first book on Lundy's life and career documents his early work in the Sarasota School of Architecture, his churches, and his government buildings. In addition to essays on his use of light and material, many of the architect's original drawings, paintings, and sketches are reproduced here for the first time.

Résumé:
In 1971 Alighiero e Boetti commissioned Afghan embroiderers to create a map of the world, with each country bearing the colours and pattern of its flag. The commission grew into a beautifully crafted, large-scale series of maps produced over a period of twenty years in Kabul, Afghanistan and Peshawar, Pakistan. Each map tracked geopolitical changes throughout the world: the break-up of the Soviet Union, the unification of Germany, disputes over territories in the Middle East and regime changes in the Eurasian peninsula. In this new study, Italian curator Luca Cerizza looks at Boetti's Mappa in relation to world events and the history of map-making, as well as to the contemporary art movements of Minimalism, Conceptualism and Arte Povera. Luca Cerizza is an art historian and curator based in Berlin.

Résumé:
Sarah Malakoff’s large-scale color photographs investigate domestic interiors as both a refuge from and a re-creation of the outside world. In ''Personal History'', she turns her attention to objects displayed within American homes that reference culture, history, and ideology. Whether representations of historical figures, events, or monuments, the possessions point to a longing for connection to the past and an engagement with the world at large. Often the collections of objects underscore the privilege and power implicit in the act of collecting. These souvenirs resonate—sometimes humorously, sometimes disturbingly—with the other possessions and architecture that surround them, uneasily vacillating between heroism and kitsch, patriotism and colonialism.

Résumé:
Invited to exhibit on the Mauvoisin Dam in Switzerland, Camille Llobet created a photographic series capturing a glacial landscape in transition. Shot on and around the moraines of the Mer de Glace, the images reveal a layered world of rock, ice, and sediment - remnants of a largely vanished glacier. Through diptychs that often exclude the sky and horizon, Llobet invites viewers to re-experience the scale and materiality of this grey-toned terrain. The book also features an in-depth interview with Jean-Paul Felley, in which Llobet discusses her working process, collaboration with geomorphologists, and the choreography of mountain landscapes in flux. This is the 11th artist's publication in conjunction with the yearly summer exhibition in the area of the Mauvoisin Dam in Vallais, Switzerland, curated by Jean-Paul Felley. Design: Roger Willems.

Résumé:
This publication is the result of extensive artistic and architectural research on the village of Kaliurang (Yogyakarta region, Indonesia). This book brings together different essays and a series of photographs that critically explore the spatial, transformative effects of globalisation and heritage formation on a local scale. It looks specifically at the colonial bungalows and the stories around them, questioning how they were used in the past, what their function is in the present and what they can represent in the future. In doing so, this publication intends to take into account the colonial history of the village and, at the same time, bring to the fore the voices, stories and local wisdoms often eclipsed by more prominent forms of Western knowledge production.
