Résumé:
Locus of the City examines the potential of the Grassmarket - an area in the heart of Edinburgh - in terms of its narratives and visual codes, to define its past, current and future state. Looking at the city from numerous perspectives - the geologist, architectural historian, museum curator, architect, minister, astronomer, artist, lawyer, inhabitant - it places these perceptions within a multi-layered matrix which is embodied in the site. Including new commissioned artwork, this innovative book is about seeing afresh the interconnections and meanings of place and context. Handsome and intriguing, mixing up urban photography, performance documentation and outsider art, not only is this title a must for devotees of Scotland's storied capital, but for anyone with an interest in urban perception.

Résumé:
The Atelier de la Conception de l’Espace (ALICE), affiliated with the School of Architecture at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, is an educational facility focusing on preparing students for the practice of architecture. To cultivate the ability to create or shape space, students must be confronted with an educational frame¬work that prepares them for the field’s many practical challenges, from cultural, social, environmental, and physical concerns to working with the wide range of collaborators who must bring their creativity and expertise together in the design process. The Invention of Space is the initial volume in a four-part series on ALICE, this new book focuses on how its innovative curriculum primes students to recognize the cultural practices embedded in the invention of space. Architectural spaces are conceived—and experienced—collectively within the incorporating culture. How can culture, together with a raft of com¬peting concerns, be best translated in the design process? The book explores this and related questions through a fictional narrative, in essays and with more than three-hundred images. ALICE plays a key role in the success of one of Europe’s leading schools of architecture, and this book, together with the three other volumes in the series, provides an opportunity to explore the exceptional learning environment ALICE offers.

Résumé:
Based on an exhibition of the same title, this book focus on self-confident, non-conformist feminist positions, and points out that new role models and strategies are being requested. In her essay, Amelia Jones contests the notion of a current post-feminism and, using the example of Pipilotti Rist's works, develops a model of parafeminism. Refering to Mary Beth Edelson and Annie Sprinkle, Maria Elena Buszek compares two generations and their respective strategies, and Katy Deepwell questions the role of female artists within art history. Mercedes Bunz looks at femininism in relation to flexibilized capitalism and diagnoses a new form of oppression. The exhibition's curator, Heike Munder, presents a survey of the exhibition's different positions and makes an appeal for new role models. With contributions by artists such as Anat Ben-David, Patty Chang, Mary Beth Edelson, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Manon, Yoko Ono, Pipilotti Rist, Katharina Sieverding, Annie Sprinkle, and Mathilde ter Heijne. Published with the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich.

Résumé:
Witnessing and attempting to respond to various social changes, the history of twentieth-century architecture includes numerous architects who moved between all levels of the profession, including the field of everyday objects. While some of these objects and pieces of furniture were designed or conceived as part of a larger architectural project, many others were designed as everyday objects in their own right, independent of any architectural work. OASE 121 explores why architects think about, design and make furniture. It combines theoretical research into the role of furniture within architecture, its practice and discourse, with detailed, focused studies of the work of architects who design furniture and for whom this area of work has become an important part of their oeuvre.

Résumé:
An examination of the multifaceted career of artist, activist, curator, and writer Howardena Pindell (b. 1943). It offers a fresh perspective on her abstract practice from the late 1960s through the early 1980s—a period in which debates about Black Power, feminism, and modernist abstraction intersected in uniquely contentious yet generative ways. Sarah Louise Cowan not only asserts Pindell’s rightful place within the canon but also recenters dominant historical narratives to reveal the profound and overlooked roles that Black women artists have played in shaping modernist abstraction. Pindell’s career acts as a springboard for a broader study of how artists have responded during periods of heightened social activism and used abstraction to convey political urgency. With works that drew on Ghanaian textiles, administrative labor, cosmetics, and postminimalism, Pindell deployed abstraction in deeply personal ways that resonated with collective African diasporic and women’s practices. In her groundbreaking analysis, Cowan argues that such work advanced Black feminist modernisms, diverse creative practices that unsettle racist and sexist logics.

It may come as no surprise that only two percent of new homebuyers work directly with an architect to design the space in which they will live—indeed, architects are usually seen as a luxury most of us, the other ninety-eight percent, can't afford. Yet, why shouldn't more people call on the services of architects? With fierce competition for few commissions, why do architects not seek out other sources of work and income? Now, acting within larger institutions or on their own, many architects are taking local initiatives to address the underserved, particularly the poor. "Good Deeds, Good Design" presents the best new thoughts and practices in this emerging movement toward an architecture that serves a broader population. In this book, architecture firms, community design centers, design/build programs, and service-based organizations offer their plans for buildings for the other ninety-eight percent. Twenty-eight essays and case studies illustrate successes and failures and raise both design and social issues.

Résumé:
In The Conspiracy of Art, Baudrillard questions the privilege attached to art by its practitioners. Art has lost all desire for illusion: feeding back endlessly into itself, it has turned its own vanishment into an art unto itself. Far from lamenting the "end of art," Baudrillard celebrates art's new function within the process of insider-trading. Spiraling from aesthetic nullity to commercial frenzy, art has become transaesthetic, like society as a whole. Conceived and edited by life-long Baudrillard collaborator Sylvère Lotringer, The Conspiracy of Art presents Baudrillard's writings on art in a complicitous dance with politics, economics, and media. Culminating with "War Porn," a scathing analysis of the spectacular images from Abu Ghraib prison as a new genre of reality TV, the book folds back on itself to question the very nature of radical thought.

Résumé:
Laterna Magika, which combines multi-genre theatre performances and films projected onto several screens on stage, emerged as as part of the programme promoting Czechoslovakian culture for Expo 58. Owing to its experimental nature, its combination of different art forms, the interconnection of art and new technologies, its significant role in the international promotion of Czechoslovakia, and its collaboration with numerous remarkable personalities, Laterna Magika was and still is a unique phenomenon within the context of Czech / Slovakian and international art. This monograph, which focuses on the period between 1958 and 1992, presents it as a phenomenon shaped by its many dichotomies: Laterna Magika is both fragmentary and complex, distractive and immersive, past and present, reproduced and live, traditional and progressive, ideological and critical of ideology, popular and elitist, discreet and voyeuristic.

Résumé:
The age of information, media, and virtuality is transforming every aspect of human experience. Questions that have long haunted the philosophical imagination are becoming urgent practical concerns: Where does the natural end and the artificial begin? Is there a difference between the material and the immaterial? In his new work, Mark C. Taylor extends his ongoing investigation of postmodern worlds by critically examining a wide range of contemporary cultural practices. Nothing defines postmodernism so well as its refusal of depth, its emphasis on appearance and spectacle, its tendency to collapse a three-dimensional world in which image and reality are distinct into a two-dimensional world in which they merge. The postmodern world, Taylor argues, is a world of surfaces, and the postmodern condition is one of profound superficiality. For many cultural commentators, postmodernism's inescapable play of surfaces is cause for despair. Taylor, on the other hand, shows that the disappearance of depth in postmodern culture is actually a liberation repleat with creative possibilities. Taylor introduces readers to a popular culture in which detectives--the postmodern heroes of Paul Auster and Dennis Potter--lift surfaces only to find more surfaces, and in which fashion advertising plays transparency against hiding. Taylor looks at the contemporary preoccupation with body piercing and tattooing, and asks whether these practices actually reveal or conceal. Phrenology and skin diseases, the "religious" architecture of Las Vegas, the limitless spread of computer networks--all are brought within the scope of Taylor's brilliant analysis. Postmodernism, he shows, has given us a new sense of the superficial, one in which the issue is not the absence of meaning but its uncontrollable, ecstatic proliferation. Embodying the very tendencies it analyzes, Hiding is unique. Conceived and developed with well-known designers Michael Rock and Susan Sellars, this work transgresses the boundary that customarily separates graphic design from the story within a text. The product of nearly three decades of reflection and writing, Hiding opens a window on contemporary culture. To follow the remarkable course Taylor charts is to see both our present and past differently and to encounter a future as disorienting as it is alluring. Conceived and developed with designers Michael Rock and Susan Sellers.
