Résumé:
Published in conjunction with the exhibition at Pirelli HangarBicocca in Milan, this monograph presents the most up-to-date compilation of the spatial and architectural works of New Mexico–based artist Bruce Nauman (born 1941). Through his neons, corridors and room installations, Nauman accentuates the contrast between the perceptual and physical experience of space. Perception itself can be interpreted as the subject matter of his work; the aesthetic experience of entering a narrow corridor or an empty room flooded with neon light supersedes the art 'objects' in the viewer’s experience. The volume includes newly commissioned essays on Nauman's conceptual developments and formal variations by scholars, conservators and curators such as Joan Simon, Francesca Esmay and Gloria Sutton, and a text by the exhibition curators. Alongsidephotographic documentation of the show, the publication also features entries for the 30 works on display written by researchers from international institutions.

Résumé:
"Borderlands" is a documentary essay shot along the US side of the border with Mexico between 2017 and 2019, at the height of the Trump era. The series aims to develop a narration capable of going beyond the emergency perspective under which border-related issues are often presented and to transport the complexity of this 3,600 kilometers long strip of land. Crossed by migrants and travelers for decades but also inhabited by a very diverse range of souls, the borderlands seem to become a different place from the two countries they separate. Francesco Anselmi is an award winning documentary photographer living in Milan, Italy. His work focuses on border areas and the various consequences contemporary border policies are having on the people living in there. He is currently working on a long term project about border communities in the European Union. His images have been published and exhibited internationally.

Résumé:
This book is a study of mass transit networks in urban areas and of their role in shaping the structure of the city. It establishes links between the history, planning and transport networks of eleven international cities (London, New York, Paris, Berlin, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Madrid, Barcelona, Milan, Mexico City and Singapore), in a survey which helps us bring to mind the origins of modern means of transport: of conventional railways and their subsequent conversion into metros and tramways, and into today's high-speed trains; of the appearance in the metropolitan context of the motor car and bus, and the arrival of motorways and contemporary airports. In short, the history and morphology of transport networks in our big cities, described through the detailed study and comparative analysis of developments in each of them, all of this with a wealth of images, maps and data of interest.

Résumé:
Breaking free from twenty years of fascist rule, post-war Italy became fertile ground for brutalist architecture. Stark new concrete forms reshaped Italian urban landscapes with bold landmarks, from the iconic Torre Velasca in the centre of Milan to the controversial Vele di Scampia housing complex on the periphery of Naples. This playful and engaging book guides readers around these examples of Italian brutalist architecture, informing curious explorers about their features, failures, and successes, with a special focus on public housing estates such as “Lavatrici” in Genoa, Nuovo Corviale in Rome, Vele di Scampia in Naples, and Rozzol Melara in Trieste. The first half of Brutalia opens with a foreword by Italian architect and writer Alessandro Benetti; it includes photographs of the featured buildings and details on their histories. The second section contains five pre-cut and pre-folded models to press out and assemble. All you need is glue!

Résumé:
"Always and never" is a one-off title by Ari Marcopolous combining old and new photographs in a unique body of work, thought to create a larger picture of Marcopoulos' work. "For every photograph that has been presented, there are hundreds more that he has not yet found the right moment to introduce. Timing is not just in relation to taking the shot, but also to its public exposure." states curator Kate Fowle in her text for the 2006 "Flow" exhibition catalog. Marcopoulos’s work is often talked about in the context of his engagement with subcultures (skateboarding, art, music). Non-descript skies, anonymous television footage, and unpopulated landscapes counter the action of extreme sports, the stage, or the street, for which he is most known for. The book is published on occasion of the exhibition "Always and Never" at Galleria Patricia Armocida in Milan.

Résumé:
This is the first attempt to understand how sculpture and architecture have come to be fused in such an intriguing alliance. Mies van der Rohe's pioneering Barcelona Pavilion (1929) is taken as the point of departure and a leitmotif for the book, which concludes with Dan Graham's hybrid pavilion sculptures of the 1980s and 90s. It identifies the special status which pre-war architects assigned to sculpture, and examines spaces for display and the independent sculptures which they housed: Eliel Saarinen's Cranbrook Campus, Edoardo Persico's Pavilion at the Milan Triennale, and Mies van der Rohe's celebrated paper project for a Museum for a Small City. Three further case studies show how architecture came to predominate over the sculpture which it housed: Philip Johnson's sculpture court for MoMA, Carlo Scarpa's extension to the Canova Gipsoteca; and the pavilions for Sonsbeek by Gerrit Rietveld and Aldo van Eyck.

Résumé:
10x10 is an account of 10 years of Emiliano Ponzi’s work, spent designing ideas whilst comfortably seated in a 10x10 sq m room in Milan - the illustrator’s home and office. Four walls, a white screen and a window, the only means of escape through which the artist’s images, like carrier pigeons, fly away to editors and art directors. Some of these modern visual metaphors are lost in space, while others return to the window-sill, bringing welcome and, sometimes, unwelcome replies. With an introduction by Nicholas Blechman (art director of the New York Times Book Review), this publication brings us a collection of these images with four different cover choices and a selection of e-mails, sent as Emiliano Ponzi received them. Some amusing, some scathing, but all anonymous. Vividly illustrated for the international press and advertising companies, Ponzi’s sharp accounts record the joys and sorrows of his captivating profession.

Résumé:
This publication is a result of visits and discussions carried out by Hans Ulrich Obrist in artists’ studios in Prague around 2001 and 2008. Interviews with Milan Grygar, Jií Kovanda, Karel Malich, Zdenk Sýkora, and many others, map the historical events as well as unknown stories of the actors of the Czech “second avant-garde” or “neo-modernism” of the former socialist block. The artists and intellectuals of this generation were born in between 1920–1945. They lived through the 1960s cultural upheaval known as the Prague Spring, becoming part of international cultural movements for a limited time, and witnessed the “normalization” of the 1970s when censorship was re-introduced. This series of interviews contextualize a generation of Czech artists within the historical events that marked their lives and careers, and draw attention to their urgency to resist historical events while keeping their artistic practices sustained, radical, and vital.

" Shortly after graduating in Bridge and Road Engineering in 1929 and being appointed to the rank of reserve lieutenant, I took a look around my city. There were no patterns to follow—only examples to imitate. The grand extravagant projects were the monopoly of the regime of arrogance and favoritism. A modern fish market was needed to replace the grubby “pietra del pesce” on Via Marina. I studied the problem on the spot and visited various other fish markets in Pozzuoli, Milan, Venice, Marseilles, Ostend, Hamburg. " This is how Luigi Cosenza (Naples 1905–1984) describes the genesis of his first project. The Fish Market of Naples—built in 1929 and considered the manifesto of the city’s rational architecture. This book documents the building with series of images produced by Thomas Ruff, a major contemporary artist from Germany, beginning with photos taken in the dazzling light of an early afternoon back in September 2002.

Résumé:
German designer Konstantin Grcic, winner of the Compasso d`Oro (Milan, 2001) among other awards, is a figure in the international scene. He has received numerous commissions from such prestigious names in the design industry as Authentics, Flos, iittala, Krups, Magis and Muji. From his initial training as a cabinet-maker, Grcic retains the hands-on approach and sensitivity to materials of a craftsman. His foray into contemporary design at the Royal College of Art in London, added a new dimension to his fascination with making things. As a result, every one of his products is informed by his research into the history of design and architecture, and a passion for technology. The book presents the work of KGID, show-casing a remarkable portfolio and offering an insight into the design process through the various stages of a product's development. Conceived by Florian Böhm and Konstantin Grcic, and illustrated with sketches, computer renderings and photographs.
