Résumé:
This book analyzes not just buildings themselves, but the ideas and principles that make each of the featured structures so important to the history and evolution of our built environment. From ancient and classical architecture through medieval, Gothic, and Renaissance buildings, the explosion of Baroque and Rococo, and the 19th-century "battle of the styles," to the emergence of modernism, postmodernism, and the glittering skyscrapers of the 20th and 21st centuries, the book traces the evolution of construction. Using stunning infographics and mind-maps, it shows how architects throughout history have pushed boundaries and created innovative buildings. Examples of architectural movements and styles are drawn from all over the world.

Résumé:
When it was completed in 1952 along New York's East River, The United Nations Building stood as a symbol of world humanitarianism, a beacon of unity after the Second World War. More than 50 years on, the 39-story building is regarded as one of the pinnacles of mid-century modernism. Its magnificent public spaces and assembly halls, as well as its impressive collection of art by Chagall, Henry Moore and many others make it one of the most visited sites in New York. On the celebration of the United Nations' 60th anniversary, and before a long period of renovation, this book presents a portrait of this fascinating building.

Résumé:
The great Russian modernist painter and theorist Wassily Kandinsky was one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art. Few documents provide more insight into his evolution from figural to abstract art—or into the development of abstraction in the early twentieth century—than the pages of his sketchbooks. Featuring previously unpublished drawings, "Wassily Kandinsky: The sketchbooks" is a comprehensive selection of hundreds of sketches from twelve notebooks Kandinsky kept between 1889 and 1935. Beginning with early figure studies, architectural sketches, and landscapes, the notebooks reveal a process of exploration that would lead Kandinsky from his first experiments in geometric abstraction to paintings that reshaped modernism.

Résumé:
"New Living” (Das Neue Wohnen) was the title of an exceptional architectural propaganda film created in 1930 by German avant-garde artist and filmmaker Hans Richter. It show-cased exemplary modernist buildings and furniture – some of which were on view shortly afterwards in the prestigious exhibitions "The International Style” – and contrasted them with impractical, unhygienic living spaces. The visual diversity of "New Living”, and its use of an experimental montage technique, pioneered a radical new method of portraying architecture on celluloid. This publication includes detailed sequences from the New Living film, as well as numerous documents that illustrate the new style of architectural modernism. Previously priced at $96.00.

Résumé:
Charles (1907-1978) and Ray (1912-1988) Eames’s residential architecture is defined by their human-centered approach to modernism. Their work demonstrates a deep commitment to structural clarity, user-centered functionality, and the intelligent use of prefabrication. Rather than focusing purely on aesthetics, the Eameses approached architecture as a form of problem-solving, aiming to create flexible systems that offered a background for life and work in all its expressions. This book presents all eight houses they designed between 1945 and 1955, featuring sketches, drawings, letters, and photographs – many of which have never been published before – alongside newly produced diagrams and models that offer further insight into their design process.

Résumé:
This highly anticipated new volume in the Review series documents some two hundred largely unpublished buildings in Tashkent, Genoa, Tbilisi, and Casablanca. These cities experienced rapid development during the twentieth century, each offering its unique response to Modernism. Rather than merely providing a historical survey, this book uncovers the underlying logic of these cities’ urban fabric through an examination of their prevalent built heritage. Over four years, architects Emanuel Christ and Christoph Gantenbein, together with teaching staff and students of architecture and design at ETH Zurich’s Department of Architecture, analyzed the featured structures to offer a wide-ranging array of original typological solutions for contemporary architecture and urban design.

Résumé:
"Trees, Time, Architecture!" marks an evolutionary step from shaping objects towards designing processes. The volume brings together a variety of views on the relationship between trees and architecture, urban spaces, modernism, politics, feminism, and cultural values. This collage of historical, research-based and discourse-related perspectives looks at how trees can be preserved, used, and appreciated in the Anthropocene. It highlights historic examples of growing architecture, such as the living root bridges of the Khasi people in India, the accommodation of trees in urban housing and public spaces, novel approaches to design and construction with living trees, as well as trees as a resource for building material.

Résumé:
Architects, historians, and theorists have been obsessed with fascist architecture since postmodernism. But who are the antifascist architects? What does antifascist architecture look like? This book is the first attempt at creating a working definition. Significant scholarship has already been presented about anti-colonial architecture, militant modernism, liberation architecture, and so forth, yet antifascist architecture is an avenue that remains to be explored. "Antifascist architecture" collects a kaleidoscope of diverse architects who heroically aligned themselves with antifascist struggles around the world. It is written for students and practitioners of architecture, but also activists and scholars in the social sciences who are interested in antifascist history, theory, and practice.
