''In 1969 the Architectural Review invited guest editor Tim Rock to produce a few issues of the magazine. His brief was to take a hard look at the state of Britain, which must have come as a rude awakening for the readers of this conservative journal. I was lucky to receive the opening assignment for this ambitious project and spent the following six weeks recording the frustrations surrounding life, work and leisure in the Britain of the late 1960s. The result was a photo essay called 'Manplan' which ran for 75 pages in the magazine and from which these images are drawn. The project ran for several more issues, with other editorial photographers exploring more specific subjects for the project. However, I think it’s fair to surmise that the magazine, its readers, and its advertisers were relieved to return to the safer territory of architectural photography, with its correct verticals and its political correctness too!'' - PW

Résumé:
In the 1950s, when contemporary industrial design was just beginning to take off in Italy, Franca Santi Gualtieri was invited to join the editorial team of the fledgling Stile Industria, an offshoot of the influential design magazine, Domus. Written as a personal history of the birth of contemporary Italian industrial design, this charming and engaging paperback maps out the story of Gualtieri's experience at the magazine from the years 1954 to 1963, as well as his close collaboration with the famed, contemporaneous Abitare magazine. Contributors to both magazines made their careers as designers during the era, and are today among the most famous in the world--including Ettore Sottsass, Bruno Munari, Vico Magistretti, Albe Steiner and many others. Stile Industria was a landmark publication that wielded tremendous influence over its 10 years of existence. It defined the design standard during an era when Italy led the way for the rest of the world.

Résumé:
From 1967, up until his death, Eduardo Paolozzi was involved with the innovative British literary magazine Ambit, using its pages as a space for some of his most experimental and innovative creations, pushing at the boundary between text and image. Collages, visual essays and fragments from novels, drawing on pop culture images from newspapers, magazines and advertisements. Reprinted in their entirety for the first time, Paolozzi’s works for Ambit tackle the war in Vietnam, the acceleration of Japanese technology, and the utopias of mass advertising. This publication reproduces the Paolozzi pages from Ambit along with magazine covers, poems and advertisements that originally appeared alongside the artist’s work. The book is housed in a day-glo pink sleeve that also contains an essay written by David Brittain which puts Paolozzi’s work for the magazine into context. An exhibition, inspired by the book, will be at Raven Row in London from 4 September to 1 November 2009.

The magazine examines the legacy of the Italian structural engineer Pier Luigi Nervi (1891–1979), who gained worldwide fame in his lifetime as one of the 20th century’s greatest creators of structural architectures. His portfolio continues to affirm his remarkable contribution to the field. "Rediscovered" in the 1990s, Nervi’s legacy and the multidimensional facets of his work have re-emerged today thanks to numerous research efforts, such as the conservation efforts by Francesco Romeo, guest editor of this issue.
