Résumé:
This issue of Un Sedicesimo originates from a journey into the present and from memory as its sediment is deposited in our own personal gaze. It focuses on the dialogue between images and words, taking the shape of a notebook recording our daily lives; it is a collection of tracks and traces represented through collages, charcoals drawings, watercolours, shellac and burns. Gianluigi Colin works with the precision of an archaeologist to highlight fragments of words, signs and figures within the fissures of our everyday existence. Gianluigi Colin was born in Pordenone in 1956. For many years he has been conducting artistic research touching upon two systems that only appear different: words and pictures. His work is an investigation of the meaning of representation, the importance of memory, and the layering of vision.

Back in print. The work of New York-based architects Diller + Scofidio is consistently at the cutting edge of current thought, helping to radically redefine the role of the architect and architecture in contemporary society. Targeting the body as "a site of transient inscriptions, inseparable from program," they constructed Flesh, a book/project that, in their words, "maps out strategies for 'contractual space' in which architecture can perform critically within encoded spaces of privacy and publicity." The result is a dynamic publication that is not so much a book about their projects as it is a reworking of their projects--interwoven with multiple strands of text and imagery, Flesh is a new "indexical structure" that allows the reader to determine diverse paths through the document.

Résumé:
In this collection of essays Martha Rosler embarks on a broad inquiry into the economic and historical precedents for today’s soft ideology of creativity, with special focus on its elaborate retooling of class distinctions. In the creative city, the neutralization or incorporation of subcultural movements, the organic translation of the gritty into the quaint, and the professionalization of the artist combine with armies of eager freelancers and interns to constitute a new social sphere in which an elaborate retooling of traditional markers of difference has allowed class distinctions to be dissolved or willfully suppressed. The result is a handful of cities selected for revitalization rather than desertion, where artists in search of cheap rent become the avant-garde pioneers of gentrification. And it may be for this reason that, for Rosler, it becomes all the more necessary to locate the functioning of power within this new urban paradigm, to find a position from which to make it accountable to something other than its own logic.

Résumé:
This volume presents a visual survey of Donald Judd's permanently installed living and working spaces in New York and Texas. Edited by Rainer Judd and Flavin Judd, it includes newly commissioned and archival photographs presented alongside five essays and drawings for architecture and design by the artist. From 101 Spring Street, a nineteenth-century cast-iron building in Manhattan, to Ayala de Chinati, an extensive ranch in the mountains of western Texas, this book details the interiors, exteriors, and land surrounding the buildings that comprise Judd’s extant living and working spaces stewarded by Judd Foundation. Each space was thoroughly considered by Judd with resolute attention to function and design. From furniture to utilitarian structures that Judd designed himself, these spaces underscore his deep interest in the preservation of buildings and his deliberate interventions within existing architecture.

Nikolai Vavilov anticipated the disappearance of plant diversity and within the space of a few decades through study and travel all over the world he found the means of saving it. For political and ideological reasons, Vavilov was condemned to death and left to starve in the dungeon of a Soviet prison. Gradually, on both sides of the iron curtain, his memory began to fade. One hundred years after Vavilov's first expedition, the photographer Mario Del Curto retraced his footsteps. For four years he met with those who, despite overwhelming obstacles, perpetuate Vavilov's seed prospecting, selection and conservation work in order to save the planet's staple food crops. This book is the unprecedented story of his journey to the heart of the Vavilov Institute and its twelve research stations.

Résumé:
Trees have been a subject of lifelong engagement for acclaimed American photographer Robert Adams (born 1937), and no species has enthralled him more than the cottonwood. Revered by the Plains Indians, native cottonwoods animate the landscape unforgettably but their thirst for water and lack of commercial value have made them common targets for removal by agricultural business and housing developers. Some of Adams’ earliest pictures were of cottonwoods, and he photographed them throughout the 35 years that he lived in Colorado, beginning in 1975. Each of the black-and-white photos in the series was taken within a 50-mile radius of his home in Colorado. Originally published by the Smithsonian in 1994, this new edition of Cottonwoods has been expanded and enlarged to include an interview with Adams by Constance Sullivan.

Résumé:
Johan Huizinga’s phrase "magic circle" circumscribes cultural fields whose logic manifests itself in rules and rituals that mark a distance from normative societal orders. At the same time, the economic and political realities surrounding the "magic circle" act upon it, are renegotiated within it, and sometimes result in rule changes of the sort that this issue of Texte zur kunst scrutinizes by comparing two of the practices Huizing approaches with his concept: art and sports. The contributions examine a variety of historical moments and cultural phenomena, including Impressionism’s revolt against the academic disciplining of art; physical-performance-focused artistic practices that dismantle misogynistic traditions; platform capitalism’s effects on the politics of the body supported by digital technology; and the use of technically generated imagery to enforce fairness in sports competition.

From 1970 Luigi Ghirri roamed around the houses, streets, squares and suburbs in his adoptive town of Modena and built a body of early work which contains within it signposts to many of the directions his practice would subsequently take. He began to map out projects and themes -- some specifically grouped around a subject, others gathered around a more poetic organising principle. One of the latter was ''Colazione sull'Erba'' (Breakfast on the Grass) in which he bought together photographs made between 1972 and 1974 on the outskirts of Modena. His focus was the juncture of nature and artifice in the man-made environment; the symmetries of cypress trees, well-kept lawns, the personalising touch of plants in pots, palm trees and cacti with their promise of somewhere else.

Résumé:
Located on a triangular site within the Polanco area of Mexico City, the internationally acclaimed Museo Jumex exhibits a sizable collection of contemporary art—Colección Jumex—and is part of a wider urban redevelopment. The extremely individual quality of the neighboring buildings overrides any attempt to integrate the museum with its surroundings and instead allows for a rare architectural opportunity: the construction of a building that is simultaneously distinct from and complementary to its larger context. This publication delineates the design and construction of the museum, as conceived by the David Chipperfield Architects. It features photographs by Iwan Baan, texts by architecture scholars Miquel Adrià, Patrick Charpenel, Luis Fernández-Galiano and Beatrice Galilee, as well as a conversation between Hans Ulrich Obrist and David Chipperfield on the conceptual basis of the project.

Résumé:
The architectural drawing might seem to be a quintessentially modern form, and indeed many histories of the genre begin in the early modern period with Italian Renaissance architects such as Alberti. Yet the Middle Ages also had a remarkably sophisticated way of drawing and writing about architecture. ''God’s own language'' takes us to twelfth-century Paris, where a Scottish monk named Richard of Saint Victor, along with his mentor Hugh, developed an innovative visual and textual architectural language. In the process, he devised techniques and terms that we still use today, from sectional elevations to the word “plan.” Surprisingly, however, Richard’s detailed drawings appeared not in an architectural treatise but in a widely circulated set of biblical commentaries. Seeing architecture as a way of communicating with the divine, Richard drew plans and elevations for such biblical constructions as Noah’s ark and the temple envisioned by the prophet Ezekiel. Interpreting Richard and Hugh’s drawings and writings within the context of the thriving theological and intellectual cultures of medieval Paris, Karl Kinsella argues that the popularity of these works suggests that, centuries before the Renaissance, there was a large circle of readers with a highly developed understanding of geometry and the visual language of architecture.
