Résumé:
In the vibrant downtown Manhattan art scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Taiwanese-American artist Tehching Hsieh made an exceptional series of artworks. Hsieh realized five separate one-year-long performances that were unprecedented in their use of physical difficulty over extreme durations and in their absolute conception of art and life as simultaneous processes. After years of near-invisibility Hsieh has now collaborated with the writer and curator Adrian Heathfield to create this meticulous record of the complete body of his artworks from 1978-1999. This publication is the first extensive critical account of these works. Heathfield's meditation is complemented by an intensive exchange with the artist and a set of letters from art theorists Peggy Phelan and Carol Becker, and the artists Marina Abramovic, Santiago Sierra, and Tim Etchells.

Résumé:
Typography Papers is an occasional book-length publication with a broad international scope, publishing extended articles relating typography to adjacent disciplines. Number 7 presents an eclectic collection of articles beginning with a lengthy consideration by type historian H. D. L. Vervliet of Claude Garamond: the designer whose new roman typefaces debuted in Paris in the 1530s and went on to dominate Western typography for the next two centuries. The late Justin Howes looks at the eighteenth-century belief in the necessity of perfection in type and printing. Eric Kindel discusses a nineteenth-century scheme for univeral letters. Sue Walker writes on twentieth-century typefaces designed for reading by young children. The issue concludes with Linda Reynolds's eyewitness account of pioneering work in legibility research in the 1970s and 1980s.

Résumé:
In January 2020, Alec Soth received a letter from Chris Fausto Cabrera, an inmate of the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Rush City, in which he asked the photographer to engage in a dialogue. This sparked an expansive and insightful correspondence over the following nine months which, set against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, Black Lives Matter Movement and growing unrest, reaches to the heart of contemporary America. In amongst their exchanges of personal histories and shared influences – from Ralph Ellison’s The Invisible Man and André 3000, to Robert Frank’s The Americans and Rilke’s 'Letters to a Young Poet' – developed a searing investigation of the redemptive power of art and the imagination, justice and accountability, life inside America’s prisons, and the astonishing capacity of empathy and curiosity to bring two people together.

Résumé:
A catalogue documenting two exhibitions of works by Alexander Calder and Jean Prouvé at Gagosian Gallery, Paris, and Galerie Patrick Seguin, Paris. Calder and Prouvé met in the early 1950s. They corresponded regularly between Calder’s frequent trips to Paris, exchanging ideas on architecture and sculpture. In 1958, Calder collaborated with Prouvé to construct the steel base of La Spirale, a monumental mobile for the UNESCO site in Paris. Letters between the two are illustrated and reprinted in the catalogue. Calder/Prouvé evokes comparisons in the broad, expressive range of production, emphasis on form, and use of new technologies that the close friends and collaborators evinced in their parallel practices as artist and designer. Considered together, the works in this book testify to the fruitful exchange between two giants of modernism in its most utopian aspirations.

Résumé:
The Other Architect presents 23 case studies that emphasize the potential for architecture to identify the urgent issues of our time. These international and often multidisciplinary groups, with examples from the 1960s to today, invented and adopted new methods outside of traditional design practices in order to create architecture without building. The alternative approaches shown in the exhibition challenge the concept of individual authorship in favor of establishing collaborative networks or partnerships with permeable roles. Their work took on non-traditional forms such as bibliographies, surveys, databases, conferences, posters, questionnaires and manifestos. By avoiding the built form, these unexpected ways of practicing allow architecture to actively shape a cultural agenda. 416 pages and over 300 colour facsimiles of traces left in letters, books, drawings, photographs, budgets, videos, mission statements, meeting minutes, T-shirts, boats, and buses
