Résumé:
In the late 1960s, Lee Lozano (1930–99) conceived of and executed a series of "language pieces," written in the pages of her notebooks, consisting of rules and parameters for the actions that would constitute a piece. From offering money to houseguests to smoking as much marijuana as possible, Lozano boldly tested social norms, culminating in two of her most famous works: ''General Strike Piece'' (1969), which saw her retreating from the art world completely, and ''Decide to Boycott Women'' (1971), in which she ceased engaging with all members of her own gender. ''Lee Lozano: Language Pieces'' presents 46 of these pieces, reproducing them at full scale. Nearly five decades later, these radical manifestations of 1960s and '70s conceptualism continue to exert their political and artistic influence.

Résumé:
For the first time, this book gives a comprehensive account of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s urban projects. It presents preparatory drawings, collages and models for many little-known works from the artists’ early career, some of which were never carried out, such as the planned wrapping of several New York City skyscrapers, as well as the spectacular large-scale projects of later years, such as the wrapping of the Pont Neuf bridge in Paris in 1985, the wrapping of the Reichstag building in Berlin in 1995 and the 2005 installation The Gates in New York’s Central Park. In two detailed essays, the authors of the book explore Christo’s extraordinary talent for drawing and investigate the artists’ ambivalent perspective on urban space, which oscillates between a powerful critique of the city’s impersonal modernism and a tribute to the liberal, democratic use of urban areas.

Résumé:
Marcel Breuer (1902–81) is celebrated as a furniture designer, teacher and architect who changed the American house after his emigration from Hungary to the US in 1937. More recently historians, architects and—with the reopening in New York of the great megalith of his Whitney Museum as the Met Breuer—a larger public are gaining new insights into the cities and large-scale buildings Breuer planned. Often seen as a pioneer of a “Brutalist modernism” of reinforced concrete, Breuer might best be understood through the lens of the changing institutional structures in and for which he worked, a vantage developed in the fresh approaches gathered here in essays by a group of younger scholars. These essays draw on an abundance of newly available documents held in the Breuer Archive at Syracuse University, now accessible online.

Claudia den Boer’s second photobook is about connecting to something that has existed for a long time, to slow down, to be still, to look, and look again. Why do we tend to pick up stones? We toss them in the water, or take them as souvenirs. In doing so, we seem to seek connection to the earth, or maybe even to eternity. It is precisely this connection that Den Boer was(...)

It is precisely this connection that Den Boer was searching for when she picked up stones in the Sahara and Tibet, around Montserrat and in the Georgian Caucasus. Through photographic studies, she examines the experience of light, scale, perspective, and spatiality in an eclectic and meditative selection of images depicting mountains, rocks, and stones.

Résumé:
Since the early twentieth century, Latin America has been home to some of the most compelling architecture--from the large-scale and otherworldly civic structures of the Brazilian Oscar Niemeyer to the more intimate work of Mexico's Luis Barragan. In Latin American Houses, historian Mercedes Daguerre shows that this tradition of architectural innovation lives on in the work of such contemporary architects as 2006 Pritzker Prize-winner Paulo Mendes da Rocha (Brazil), Mathias Klotz (Chile), Angelo Bucci (Argentina), and LBC Arquitectos (Mexico), among others. Focusing on one-family houses that have been built over the past decade, this title explores the elegance and innovation with which today's Latin American architects evolve their modernist heritage.

Résumé:
The Toyko firm Tezuka Architects, headed by Takaharu and Yui Tezuka, is enjoying an increasingly international reputation for its refined blend of traditional and contemporary Japanese aesthetics, developing solutions which seem refreshingly unconventional while remaining anchored in the scale and needs of everyday life. Tezuka buildings often sport such features as large sliding-door fronts and verandas, and make particular use of wood and lightweight steel in order to effect a smooth back-and-forth flow between building and environment. In this respect their buildings call to mind centuries-old Japanese architectural tradition, which is absorbed into present day developments in design and construction technologies. Large public buildings such as the Fuji kindergarten and the Natural History Museum in Matsunoyama demonstrate the popularity of this synthesis.

Résumé:
Existing patterns of urbanization are unsustainable in the long run. Current development practices consume enormous amounts of land and resources, damage local ecosystems, produce pollutants, create huge inequalities between groups of people, and undermine local community and quality of life. Unfortunately planning has itself led to many unsustainable development practices. "Planning for Sustainability" presents a straightforward, systematic analysis of how more sustainable cities and towns can be brought about. It does so in a highly readable manner that considers in turn each scale of planning: international, national, regional, municipal, neighbourhood, site, and building. In the process it illustrates how sustainability initiatives at these different scales interrelate and how an overall framework can be developed for more liveable communities.

Résumé:
In modern masonry work it is customary to use large size blocks in building. They fulfil all the construction requirements even in single layer outside walls. This book of practical examples based on sound knowledge, takes a keen look at the current state of building with large clay blocks and reduces the information to the essentials. Using two houses as examples, all details are presented clearly and comprehensively in a scale of 1:10. The authors throw light on critical points, showing where care should be given to achieve convincing sustainable results. This book is a standard text book for single leaf walls built with large clay blocks, and shows section drawings and explanatory notes reveal the inner workings of the construction itself.

Résumé:
After North America, the second-most urbanized region in the world is Latin America and the Caribbean, 78% of whose population lives in cities. The result of five years of recent research by Vienna’s Urban Design Lab, this handbook contextualizes emergent planning issues at hand in the region, where cities are continuing to grow at considerably high rates. Case studies conducted between 2013 and 2018 in over 20 cities, accompanied by 250 color illustrations, offer a detailed survey of the issues facing Latin American and Caribbean urban planning in the 2010s. Topics covered include social participation in the planning process, the role of culture in urban transformation, “human-scale” city development, and creative reinterpretation of existing municipal structures. Several detailed examinations of specific buildings- including Panamanian and Argentinian railway stations, airports and gardens- present focused and practical accounts of these new urban strategies.
