Résumé:
Where do we come from? Are we merely a cluster of elementary particles in a gigantic world receptacle? And what does it all mean? In this new book, the philosopher Markus Gabriel challenges our notion of what exists and what it means to exist. He questions the idea that there is a world that encompasses everything like a container life, the universe, and everything else. This all-inclusive being does not exist and cannot exist. For the world itself is not found in the world. And even when we think about the world, the world about which we think is obviously not identical with the world in which we think. For, as we are thinking about the world, this is only a very small event in the world. Besides this, there are still innumerable other objects and events: rain showers, toothaches and the World Cup. Drawing on the recent history of philosophy, Gabriel asserts that the world cannot exist at all, because it is not found in the world. Yet with the exception of the world, everything else exists; even unicorns on the far side of the moon wearing police uniforms.

Résumé:
Aditya Prakash (1924-2008) belonged to the first generation of Indian modernists that came into its own in the Nehruvian era. Built around a multi-disciplinary oeuvre that was unique amongst his peers, Prakash's life was dedicated to finding the 'one continuous line' which linked art - as the search for the beautiful, architecture - as the enabler of life, and planning - as the ethic of protecting the interests of poor. nterspersed with a series of visual essays, this book is conceived as an introduction to Prakash's vast body of work. Besides practicing architecture, he was an academic, a prolific painter, sculptor, furniture designer, stage set-designer, poet and public speaker. This volume documents Prakash's education as an architect in Delhi and London, his early modernist works, his deep artistic impulses, his love of theatre, and his efforts to rally a culture of academic inquiry. The narrative describes his successes and failures, his arguments for and against modernism, postmodernism and globalization, and his passion for sustainable urbanism, the animal and the acoustic. The book concludes with an interpretive essay on Prakash's life and legacy, along with illustrations of a portfolio of select works.

Résumé:
In April 2003 010 Publishers of Rotterdam had been active for twenty years. During those two decades they have published five hundred books on architecture and design. This specialization reflects the enthusiasm of 010's founders, Hans Oldewarris and Peter de Winter, trained as an architect and an urban designer respectively at Delft University of Technology. Besides over one hundred monographs by and about Dutch architects, with Rem Koolhaas's "S,M,L,XL" as a provisional peak, 010 have published books on more wide-ranging architecture, interior design, photography, industrial design, graphic design, and the visual arts. These aspects include a keen interest in the theory and history of architecture and design. The lion’s share of this book is taken up with a catalogue spanning the period 1983-2003. Exhaustively annotated and illustrated, it gives not just the technical details of each book such as size, format, and binding style but also the authors, editors, photographers, graphic designers and printers. A brief description of the contents rounds off each entry. Comprehensive indexes give insight into who contributed to which book and in what way. In their introductory essay Ed Taverne and Cor Wagenaar give a picture of the practice of architectural publishing in the Netherlands during those years.

Résumé:
2010 marked the 50th anniversary of Brazil's capital Brasilia. Architects Lucio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer designed what has become one of the most studied urban planning project. Niemeyer's Cathedral, his building for the National Congress and the city's 707-ft television tower are icons of modern architecture. The entire city, marked by its cross-shaped layout and vast open spaces, was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987. The author of this publication visited Brasilia's vast building sites for the first time in 1958. He returned many times over the years, documenting with his camera growth and further development of this built Utopia. Besides documenting the buildings in various stages of completion, Burri took portraits of Niemeyer and his workers and photographed Brasilia's street scenes and people and aerial views of the city's first slums. His images capture the strong sense of a new era and a vibrant atmosphere of hard work and strain; they reflect the huge dimensions of the landscape and the great scale of this project and its ambition to design and build a new capital. This book presents a large selection from hundreds of colour and black-and-white photographs, the majority of them published in this book for the first time.
