Résumé:
Addressing the histories and speculating on the futures of radical design and art education, "Decolonising design education" looks at the role that different institutional modes play in these endeavors. Developed in a dialogue among Regina Bittner, Katja Klaus and Philipp Sack (Bauhaus Dessau Foundation) and JJ Adibrata and farid rakun (Gudskul), the publication features a selection of historical case studies, conversations and in-depth reports about education practices in formerly colonized regions, shared by 10 art and design collectives. The publication is part of the Schools of Departure series, jointly published with a digital atlas mapping experiments in art and design education beyond the Bauhaus. By studying these phenomena as manifestations of "traveling concepts," which keep a wide variety of educational approaches in a process of constant exchange and motion, the publication explores routes of appropriation that move between different geographies, times and cultures.

Résumé:
Facades play a key role as interfaces between the interior and exterior of build¬ings that are supposed to live with the climate in a dynamic way and not simply function despite of it. Many historic exam¬ples prove that they can perform purposes of both representation and protection, such as vernacular loam buildings in dry and hot climate zones, the double box windows of historic European houses, or the diaphragm mechanisms of the Institute de Monde Arabe by Atelier Jean Nouvel. Climate buffers, solar chimneys, and photovoltaics are part of the toolkit of international architectural offices. For the police station in Chur by the Swiss studio Comamala Ismail, PV modules were installed on the facades at two different angles. As a result, they double as sun protection. Foster + Partners adapted traditional wind towers for the design of the Zayed National Museum in Abu Dhabi.

Résumé:
Off the Grid confronts the ecological and cultural problems associated with the way we get and use energy, and explains how it is possible to live in a beautifully designed home using much less--no matter where your home is located. Our homes are connected by a nearly invisible grid of infrastructure that binds us together. It is a system of electrical poles, wire, substations, hydroelectric dams, telecommunication towers, and water extraction and sewage systems. From within this system we work, play, and raise families. We have also created one of the greatest environmental challenges known to modern civilization. The signs of our impact upon the world can be recognized in the reports of environmental changes occurring across the earth, and they can also be seen in the growing failures of the energy grids across the world as the current system is stressed beyond its capacity.

For generations, world-leading German prosthetics company Ottobock has been restoring mobility to people and developing wearable bionics to mobilize the human body. Published on the centenary of Ottobock, this book presents the future of human mobility as envisioned by Hans Georg Näder, chairman of the company and grandson of its founder. What roles will digitalization, robotics, prostheses, artificial intelligence and the imagination play in how we optimize and employ our bodies, and shape the development of humanity? Conceived and realized by Thomas Huber, with photos by Christoph Neumann, 'Futuring Human Mobility' explores these questions and their philosophical, ethical, social, economic and medical implications in our changing global community, and incorporates interviews, essays, short stories and artwork by 40 international experts including David Chipperfield, Philipp Craven, EVA & ADELE, Yuval Noah Harari, Hugh Herr, Hiroshi Ishiguro, Chandran Nair, Carsten Nicolai, Neo Rauch, Wolfgang Schäuble, Kevin Warwick and Ranga Yogeshwar.

Résumé:
''Suffragette City'' brings together a collection of illustrated essays dedicated to exploring and analysing cases in which women have resourcefully leveraged or defied the politics of gender to form and reform architecture and urbanism. Throughout much of modern history, women have been assigned to the margins and expected to play passive social roles. This book draws on nineteenth- and twentieth-century architectural case studies from the English-speaking world, including the USA, South Africa, Scotland, India and England, to examine places and moments when women stepped into the centre of public life and claimed opportunities to shape the fabrics of their communities. Their engagements with the built environment consistently transcended architecture to achieve the level of urbanism, as whole networks of relationships came into their purview, transforming the architecture of socio-political connection as well as the confronting the physical divisions that have historically lain along racial, economic and gendered lines.

Cities have always been places where commerce and production, working and living, are physically and functionally integrated. Only with the rise of industry have zoning regulations been introduced to separate these functions. But what role do these regulations play when industry is digitized, increasingly emission-free and shifting away from mass production What will the ideal mix of working and living be in the future In a world characterized by digital disruption, migration and demographic shifts, how do we build cities based on social equity and resilience. Based on interdisciplinary urban design research undertaken at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, the Zurich-based architecture studio Hosoya Schaefer presents ''The industrious city: urban industry in the digital age''. Investigating how production can be reintroduced into the urban fabric, this book explores how production, services, leisure and living might come together in a future integrated city.

From scrolls and sheets of papyrus to elaborate and expensive codices to the mass press-printed volumes as we know them today, books have come a long way since writing was first developed. Although digital technology has impacted how we consume information over the last few decades, book design has survived as a means of showcasing creativity and craftsmanship, as books remain important sources of inspiration, knowledge, and entertainment. "A book on books" showcases some of the best book design work from all over the world in celebrating the designers’ contributions to preserving reading culture, as they continue to make books eye-catching and exciting to read or own. It also captures the voices of key influencers from publishing, printmaking, book fair organizing, and bookshop-owning standpoints, as they continue to play a crucial role in keeping the book-making industry alive and thriving even in the unknown future.

Résumé:
The world today faces overwhelming ecological and social problems and the concern for material existence on earth is more pressing than ever. This book spells out various roles that visual artists and designers play facing these issues. Collective action is necessary and inevitable. This approach often changes the artist’s identity and working habits: from individuality and autonomy to collectivity and collaboration, both locally and globally. These developments have given rise to new kinds of collective art and design practices: artists work together with non-artists, make products for their local environment and take on multiple identities, such as researcher, community activist, computer hacker or business consultant. This volume looks at art practices across all continents that do not conform to a Western concept of art nor to traditional distinctions between art, design, research and activism—where the boundaries between art, design, research and activism become blurred or are dissolved.

Résumé:
From the advent of early colonial photography in the 19th century to contemporary 'white savior' social-media images, photography continues to play an integral role in the maintenance of white sovereignty. As various scholars have shown, the technology of the camera is not innocent, and neither are the images it produces. The invention and continuation of the 'white race' is not just a political, social and legal phenomenon; it is also a complexly visual one. What does whiteness look like, and how might we begin to trace an antiracist history of artistic resistance that works against it? ''The image of whiteness'' seeks to introduce its reader to some important extracts from the troubling story of whiteness, to describe its falsehoods, its paradoxes and its oppressive nature, and to highlight some of the crucial work photographic artists have done to subvert and critique its image.

Résumé:
How can “Nordic Modernism” be defined? Did German city planners look to the North for inspiration after the Second World War? In what way did their social model affect architecture and city planning in the Nordic countries? What specific features characterize architecture and town planning in the Nordic countries compared with postwar Germany? The fiftieth anniversary of Interbau 1957 presented a timely opportunity to reappraise the Hansaviertel in Berlin and the entire New Building movement. In this context, Nordic conceptions of architecture and town planning seemed particularly worthy of critical reflection. The “people's home” (folkhem), as well as various national strands of modernization, architectural preferences and even geopolitical considerations play a role in the formation of the Nordic model. The contributors to this volume take the example of the Hansaviertel as an opportunity to investigate Nordic-German transfer in modernism—aesthetically, socioculturally and programmatically.
