Résumé:
Sigfried Giedion (1888–1968) and Carola Giedion-Welcker (1893–1979) were among the most influential scholars of art and architectural history during the early twentieth century. Of particular impact was their role in connecting leading protagonists of modernism in architecture, art, and literature, such as Alvar Aalto, Hans Arp, Constantin Brancusi, Marcel Breuer, Max Ernst, Walter Gropius, Barbara Hepworth, Le Corbusier, László Moholy-Nagy, Piet Mondrian, and Sophie Taeuber-Arp. The interactions they initiated, for example, on the new vision in photography or the synthesis of arts continue to be highly relevant to the present day. "The Giedion World" offers a long-awaited reevaluation of Sigfried and Carola Giedion-Welcker’s work and lasting significance.

Résumé:
The development of modern architecture in Korea and, more recently, South Korea, is closely tied to the country’s dramatic transformations since the late 19th century. The authors interrogate major periods from the Late Joseon Dynasty to the vibrant democratic present, showing how architecture, by making technological and stylistic leaps, has played a important role in the construction of the nation’s identity. The architectural analyses, ranging from Hwaseong Fortress to 21st-century constructions like Paju Book City, Ssamziegil Shopping Center, the Boutique Monaco skyscraper, and the Bauzium Sculpture Museum, focus on buildings in which the formation of a specifically Korean modernism is particularly observable. The appendix includes biographical descriptions of major architectural figures.

Résumé:
In many countries of Southeast Asia, the middle years of the 20th century marked the dawn of a new era. Independence had been won from colonial powers, and young states such as Burma (Myanmar), Indonesia, Cambodia and Singapore were faced with the task of reconstituting themselves as nations and developing an independent postcolonial identity. Architecture and urban planning played an important role in this process. Local manifestations of modernism emerged that sought to reconcile universal aspirations with specific social conditions. This volume critically examines this architectural and ideological heritage and argues for the preservation and redevelopment of these particular architectures, which are at risk of disappearing amid the rapid urbanization of today.

Résumé:
In the years 1984–1996, SOM continued to develop the skills for which it had become known—high standards of design, imaginative structural solutions, exceptional detailing, city making on a grand scale, expertise in managing large and complex sites—and also addressed new areas of design and practice. A contextual modernism—one attentive to climate, topography, and the regional vernacular—a focus on restoration and reuse, and an expansion of international work came to the fore in a time of great social and economic change. In his introduction, Detlef Mertins traces the firm’s history in parallel with this restructuring, a growth in real estate development and financial markets that fundamentally changed how buildings were commissioned and built.

Résumé:
Combining new biographical material with archival research, Megan R. Luke surveys Schwitters’s experiments in shaping space and the development of his Merzbau, describing his haphazard studios in Scandinavia and the United Kingdom and the smaller, quieter pieces he created there. She makes a case for the enormous relevance of Schwitters’s aesthetic concerns to contemporary artists, arguing that his later work provides a guide to new narratives about modernism in the visual arts. These pieces, she shows, were born of artistic exchange and shaped by his rootless life after exile, and they offer a new way of thinking about the history of art that privileges itinerancy over identity and the critical power of humorous inversion over unambiguous communication.

Résumé:
From the iconic modernism of Luis Barragán to the brightly colored postmodern forms of Ricardo Legoretta, this important historical document deals with the plurality of architectural styles and voices in Mexico during the 20th and early 21st centuries. Referencing French philosopher Michel Foucault’s idea of effective history in which knowledge does not encompass absolute truths delivered in traditional historical texts but rather fragments, shortening its vision to the things nearest it, Architecture in Mexico offers a new reading of the diverse interests at stake in historical Mexican architecture—its production and its subsequent reception. The volume pursues comprehension beyond built forms and closer to the ideas (and ideologies) that gave rise to them.

Résumé:
This volume showcases jet-set homes designed by the likes of Neutra, Frey, Lautner, and others. Palm Springs is famous as a mecca for the international jet set. But the city has also attracted its share of eccentrics and mavericks who have left an architectural legacy that remains unsurpassed for its originality and international influence. This book examines the impact that architects and designers have had on the desert oasis, primarily from the 1940s to the 1960s. Palm Springs Modern features examples of midcentury modernism at its most glamorous, some of them the residences of prominent figures who commissioned weekend getaways in the desert, including Frank Sinatra, Walter Annenberg, and Raymond Loewy.
