Résumé:
Nature's blueprints are in a constant state of adaptation and transformation, reacting flexibly to varying conditions and changing influences. In this respect they are a perfect model for innovative planning processes in architecture. The result is extreme efficiency and the most beautiful designs under any given spatial and temporal conditions. This publication provides an introduction to a method of designing where the development and integration of advanced technology leads to a continual optimization of form and efficiency in the resulting architecture. Looking at five prominent projects, created in recent years by Petzinka Pink Architects, technical innovation, planning contexts and general lines of development are systematically presented and reflected upon. This book provides detailed insight into the work of one of Germany's most successful architectural offices, which became known for unusual projects such as the Berlin offices of the federal state North-Rhine Westphalia, the CDU's party headquarters in Berlin, the City Gate in Dusseldorf and the Century Hall in Bochum.

Résumé:
Despite the intolerable costs of climate change and inevitably declining oil, natural gas and uranium reserves, the vast majority of cities and urban communities are planned and managed as if such existential crises did not exist. Hence the transition from fossil fuel dominated cities to an urban future marked by a radically new, renewable energy infrastructure requires entirely new tools and frames of decision-making. This is an original guide to an entirely unprecedented urban transformation, to cities and towns powered by renewable energy. Squarely focused on action, it supports design, planning and management decisions and serves as a practical guide to practitioners, academics and political leaders in communities and cities worldwide, as a useful and well-structured reference text. It is built on the most successful of past and present urban sustainability trends and emerging infrastructure directions, presenting renewable energy applications as offering new and inevitable approaches to urban infrastructure planning and the design of cities.

Résumé:
In the Bubble is about a world based less on stuff and more on people. Thackara describes a transformation that is taking place now -- not in a remote science fiction future; it's not about, as he puts it, "the schlock of the new" but about radical innovation already emerging in daily life. We are regaining respect for what people can do that technology can't. In the Bubble describes services designed to help people carry out daily activities in new ways. Many of these services involve technology -- ranging from body implants to wide-bodied jets. But objects and systems play a supporting role in a people-centered world. The design focus is on services, not things. And new principles -- above all, lightness -- inform the way these services are designed and used. At the heart of In the Bubble is a belief, informed by a wealth of real-world examples, that ethics and responsibility can inform design decisions without impeding social and technical innovation.

Résumé:
Last 2007 La Casa Encendida organised the Sueño de Casa Propia (Dream of a Home of One’s Own) exhibition, curated by María Inés Rodríguez, in which a series of reflections on housing by artists, designers and architects served as the basis for an analysis of how different contexts produce different strategies for resolving the issue of access to housing. Parallel to the exhibition, a seminar entitled Housing and Domestic Space in the 21st Century was organised. Coordinated by Juan Herreros, an architect and lecturer at the Madrid University School of Architecture, the seminar brought together a group of intellectuals from both Spain and abroad for discussions on this theme. The ultimate aim of the seminar was to raise awareness about architecture’s potential role in the current and evident transformation of lifestyles. With the collaboration of: Raúl Cárdenas, María Auxiliadora Gálvez, Vicente Guallart, Hans-Walter Müller, Philippe Rahm, Alejandro Aravena, Robert Kronenburg, Colin Davies and Enric Ruiz-Geli.

Résumé:
Alexander examines the kinds of process that are capable of generating living structure. The unfolding of living structure in natural systems is first compared to the unfolding of buildings and town plans in traditional society, and then contrasted with present day processes. The comparison reveals deep and shocking problems which pervade the present day planning and construction of buildings. He describes the detailed character of living process needed to generate, design, plan, and build buildings with living structure. The character of living process is contrasted, repeatedly, with the character of present-day professional process, which departs, again and again, from present process, in order to meet the necessities inherent in any truly life-creating process. Pervasive changes needed to create a world in which living process – and hence living structure – are attainable only through a transformation of society. The dynamic methods of Book 2, focusing on process, give an entirely different picture of the facts and concepts presented in Book 1.

"Poetic imaginations" at Aedes stages a chapter on Zhu Pei’s handling of the ‘collective historical experience’, topography, function and contemporary context of a location. The exhibition presents six representative cultural buildings that, despite their different functions and surroundings, are related to one another by characteristic structures, materials and architectural forms. Based on impressively crafted architectural models, sketches, documentary films and publications, the process of creating these examples is presented in greater depth. While the built environment in China has undergone rapid transformation, Zhu Pei has reflected on historical-philosophical ideas of harmony between people and nature and weaving traditional architectural knowledge into contemporary spatial solutions. His conceptual considerations are based on elements from the tradition of Shan Shui painting, which is deeply rooted in Chinese culture. It is a particular form of landscape painting whose indispensable components are mountains and water. It shows and teaches a mode of perception that regards us as human beings not as an antithesis to, but instead as part of "nature."

Résumé:
From "Magic and myth-work to care and repair" is a two-part book bringing together fourteen essays broadly concerned with the "fiction of the self" and with practices and explorations beyond that fiction. Each part of the book approaches this theme from a different angle. The first part, entitled "On magic and myth-work," deals with practices of transformation and with contemporary myth-making in relation to landscape, performance, and writing. The second part, “On Care and Repair,” gathers together essays that are more personal, but that also look to various technologies (or devices) of self-care alongside ideas of collaboration and the collective. Crucial throughout this exploration are questions of agency and self-narration, but also how these connect to larger issues around historical trauma, neoliberalism, and ecological crisis. The essays reference many other texts and fellow travellers, and also draw on the author's own experiences (and teaching) within various art and theory worlds, as well as with performance, magical practices, gaming, and Buddhism.

Résumé:
Cities around the world are in the midst of a profound transformation as the wealthy price out the remnants of the urban working class, especially people of color. Displacement is neither accidental or inevitable. It happens because a whole range of people and institutions profit handsomely. ''Defying displacement'', focused on the US but informed by global examples, investigates gentrification from the perspective of the people fighting it, members of communities whose survival is threatened by some of the most powerful institutions on the planet. Andrew Lee names the names and identifies the actual state and corporate forces that work together to enrich a very specific group of people: property developers and real estate investors who make a killing, politicians who watch their tax bases grow, banks that write profitable loans for new businesses and mortgages for new homeowners. Meanwhile, business districts are planned, tax abatements unveiled, redevelopment schemes dreamed up, corporate and university campuses expanded, and ordinary people are driven from their homes.
