Résumé:
Freitag bags have been an overwhelming success in the struggle between brands. This "messenger Bag" created by the Swiss bothers Daniel and Markus Freitag has become an urban cult product. The bags originate in an ironc and ecologically critical approach: the bags are cut from used lorry tarpaulins and tailor-made on a small scale with used bicycle inner tubes and safety belts. This publication describes the history of the product and asks questions about economic, ecological, and sociocultural contexts, espressing the aesthetics of a generation that is as vain as it is critical of consumerism. The book's spine is made of the same type of lorry tarpaulin as is used for the bags, thus each book's spine is unique.

Résumé:
"Supernew supergraphics" is a collection of the best architectural, environmental and interior graphic design. This all-new book shows how the current generation of designers and architects are blasting typography and graphic forms across walls – even landscapes. It shows how they are distorting space and warping entire buildings with color, typographic messages and abstract shapes. The book reflects the numerous ways in which graphics are invading public spaces and disrupting the sometimes-staid world of architecture. It’s a compendium of graphic excess on a monumental scale. It features new work from around the globe, and interviews with leading practitioners Felice Varini, Sascha Lobe, Sara De Bondt, and Boa Mistura.

Résumé:
"[re]TOKYO" explores a wide, understanding vision of the transformative processes of one of the most influential and unknown metropolitan areas in the world, from large scale efforts such as Tokyo’s land engineering transformations, to smaller examples such as its capital vending machine system. Four hundred pages, compiling 400 years of history, are covered in this uniquely Japanese complexity of social conurbation, including more than 1,400 illustrations, diagrams, photographs, and maps in order to visually support selected themes. "[re]TOKYO" develops the idea of [re]definition processes to explain what, who, when, where, and why all these changes took place, concluding with a collection of the essential processes that comprehensively elaborate Tokyo’s changes – a tool to understand its history and speculate about its future as an exciting metropolis and cultural center of the world.

Résumé:
Buildings designated brutalist in style were largely built in the 1960s and 1970s, exuding an aura of daring, uncompromising design today. It is the French term "brut,“ meaning raw or unrefined, that lent its name to this particular architectural phenomenon. Vilified for decades as the step-child of modernism, brutalist architecture is now enjoying an astonishing comeback as the latest discovery among digital trendsetters. As well as fascinating users across social networks, brutalism is also inspiring contemporary architecture. Large-scale sculptural forms, coarsely finished materials and floor plans that defy convention merge with contemporary design to generate enthralling new creations. This book offers a sophisticated overview of post-war and contemporary brutalist buildings and of the relationship – in appearance and design, in the grand concepts and the smallest details – between brutalism today and its ancestors.

Résumé:
In the 1920s, the urban theory of Ludwig Hilberseimer (1885–1967) redefined architecture’s relationship to the city. His proposal for a high-rise city, where leisure, labor and circulation would be vertically integrated, both frightened his contemporaries and offered a trenchant critique of the dynamics of the capitalist metropolis. Hilberseimer’s Groszstadt-architektur (Metropolisarchitecture) is presented here for the first time in English translation. Two additional essays frame this international cross-section of metropolitan architecture: “Der Wille zur Architektur” (The Will to Architecture) and “Vorschlag zur City-Bebauung” (Proposal for City-Building). The propositions assembled here encourage us to reconsider mobility, concentration and the scale of architectural intervention in our own era of urban expansion. This is the second title in the GSAPP Sourcebooks series, devoted to recovering and translating overlooked texts on architecture and the city.

Résumé:
Aimed at prospective and new students, this book gives a comprehensive introduction to the nature and practise of landscape architecture, the professional skills required and the latest developments. After discussing the history of the profession, the book explains the design process through principles such as hierarchy, human scale, unity, harmony, asymmetry, color, form, and texture. It looks at how design is represented through both drawing and modeling, and through digital techniques such as CAD and the use of GIS (Geographic Information Systems). This is followed by an examination of project management and landscape management techniques. Finally, the book explores educational and employment opportunities and the future of the profession in the context of climate change and sustainability.

Résumé:
Published to complement the 14th Shanghai Biennale, entitled Cosmos Cinema and curated by Anton Vidokle, this illustrated catalogue extends the exhibition's proposal that the methodologies of filmmaking might offer one way of representing and reimagining our entanglement in time and space. The book presents the work of artists from the early twentieth century to the present alongside a series of specially commissioned essays on subjects ranging from the history of Shanghai cinema to the possibility of communicating with nonhuman intelligence. Arranged according to the Nine Palaces of traditional Chinese cosmology, and reproduced here in a design that recreates the consciously cinematic experience of the exhibition, these works of art and their accompanying texts encourage us to reflect on our place within the systems that shape our lives at every scale.

Résumé:
Known until recently for such public facilities as the Zamora Municipal Museum, the Castellón Fine Arts Museum and the León Auditorium, over the last few years Mansilla + Tuñón have developed a number of projects in which urban scale and the problems of inhabiting in the contemporary city assume more and more importance. In this issue of 2G we present the (almost) complete works of these Madrid architects, works grouped around the basic ideas which define their projects, namely memory and the city, system and restrictions, sameness and difference, and lastly trace and landscape. These concepts are not watertight entities, however, but are present in each and every one of their designs as intersecting references, and they enable us to dissect the architects' way of thinking and influencing reality. Similarly, the articles accompanying the presentation of their buildings scrutinise in kaleidoscopic form the modus operandi of their work.

Résumé:
Gary Hume first found acclaim in London in the late 1980s, when his bold paintings of hospital doors, rendered at life-size scale in high-gloss hardware store paints on aluminum panels, drew much attention and ushered Hume into the ranks of the Young British Artists. Twenty years later, Yardwork features recent paintings and sculpture completed by Gary Hume in his upstate New York studio. The pictures explore familiar themes in Hume's work, including flowers, birds, doors and female figures. In the new work, however, the doors are now barn doors, as opposed to the hospital doors found in his earlier works; the blackbirds, roses and daisies are all things he sees from his window, not images drawn from books or media. Yardwork includes an essay by Dave Hickey that places Hume's paintings in the context of a group of artists the author names abstractionists of daily life.

Résumé:
Peter Salter is an architect and teacher whose work has influenced several generations of students. The culmination of ten years of planning, Walmer Yard, in Notting Hill, is his first residential project in the UK and one of only a small number of buildings he has completed worldwide. Although modest in scale, the project is extraordinary in many ways. On an irregularly shaped site, Salter’s design brings four houses into a complex relationship with each other that is half formal, half familiar, interdependent, yet solitary. Similarly, the relationships between the core team members are more nuanced than in most architectural projects, since they all met at the Architectural Association in Peter’s unit, where Crispin Kelly (the client) and Fenella Collingridge (Peter’s current collaborator) were student contemporaries. This book documents the evolution of the project through the medium of Peter Salter’s pen-and-ink drawings and Hélène Binet’s photographs.
