"The boiled frog syndrome" presents compelling evidence to show that the source of the majority of the Western diseases of civilisation that have multiplied over the past 100 years, ranging from cancers to debilitating sicknesses and allergies, can be traced to the modern built environment, our increasing exposure to electromagnetic radiation and the indiscriminate use of untested advanced technology. It is also due, in part, to the 20th century's repudiation of perennial wisdom. Our physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing will depend on our endeavours to bring about fundamental changes to combat the hazards. But how can this be done? And what can we - the so-called ordinary people - do about it? The text explores how our subtle energy sensitivities respond to the external environment and suggests the steps we can take to ensure our homes and workplaces are safe and conducive to our continued good health. For this it draws on common sense and the author's personal experience as a practising architect and consultant. Karl Blossfeldt (1865-1932) achieved overnight fame in the late 1920s with the first publication of his photographs of plants. Those photographs, which revealed the inner structures of the organic forms, immediately made him a pioneer of New Objectivity, an innovative movement in art and photography of the 1920s and 1930s. Blossfeldt, however, was neither a trained photographer nor a botanist. He was a sculptor and art professor who did his photographic work to generate teaching material for his students. The publication of this book is the result of an extraordinary event, the 1997 discovery in Blossfeldt’s estate of sixty-one previously unknown collages, in virtually mint condition, of photographic contact prints arranged on large cardboard sheets. Blossfeldt apparently used these to study the relation and similarity of the photographs and to compare them graphically and aesthetically. On some Blossfeldt had made marks or handwritten notations. Others show lines for cropping. The collages, published here for the first time, unveil a hidden treasure of modern photography and cast fresh light on the systematic approach Blossfeldt used in his photographic studies. All collages are reproduced in four colours. Introducing the book is an essay by Swiss art historian Ulrike Meyer-Stump, a contributing curator to the exhibitions at the Kunsthaus in Zurich.

For Denise Scott Brown (born 1931), who is among the most important architects of the postwar era, photography has long served as a critical medium through which to perceive, document and think about the world in which designers operate. Fascinated by the ephemeral and the everyday, Scott Brown took photographs for fun, research and teaching, and later as a component of design and planning projects. Through the lens of her Alpa camera she sought to penetrate the irreducible complexities of life around her—and to make a case for the architect and planner's role in intervening within it. "Encounters" gathers an essential collection of Scott Brown's photography from the 1950s to the 1970s, presented here for the first time. The book focuses on the formative decades during which Scott Brown departed her childhood home of Johannesburg to study in London, traveled through Europe, moved to the United States, met her partner Robert Venturi and eventually developed the profound interest in postwar suburbia from which her most famous work, "Learning from Las Vegas", would emerge. Moving thematically rather than sequentially through Scott Brown's photographic oeuvre, "Encounters" opens up new ways of reading this body of work, presenting it less as a continuous historical record than as the product of a careful and studied practice of observation.

Framing the recent "educational turn" in the arts within a broad historical and social context, this anthology raises fundamental questions about how and what should be taught in an era of distributive rather than media-based practices. Among the many sources and arguments traced here is second-wave feminism, which questioned dominant notions of personal and institutional freedom as enacted through art teaching and practice. Similarly, education-based responses by the art community to the catastrophes of World War II and postcolonial conflict critically inform contemporary art confronting the interrelationships of education, power, market capitalism, and--as Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri describe it--the global condition of war. These writings by artists, philosophers, educators, poets, and activists center on three recurring and interrelated themes: the notion of "indiscipline" in theories and practices that challenge boundaries of all kinds; the present and future role of the art school; and the turn to pedagogy as medium in a diverse range of recent projects. Other writings address such issues as instrumentalism and control, liberation and equality, the production and the politics of culture, and the roots of research-based practice and experimental participatory works.

"Asymptote", an award-winning New York City-based architectural firm, expands the boundaries of traditional practice with work that ranges from buildings and urban design to computer-generated environments. Recognized internationally as both cutting-edge architects and virtual-reality artists, Asymptote partners Lise Anne Couture and Hani Rashid have designed and written the first book to document their ‘real world’ (as opposed to virtual) projects completed since 1995. It includes work as diverse as a trading floor for the New York Stock Exchange; a multimedia research park in Kyoto, Japan; a modular furniture system for Knoll; and a centre for art and technology for the Guggenheim Museum in Soho, New York. Rashid and Couture’s work is intriguing because it draws inspiration from a wide range of sources not traditionally associated with architecture – among them the design of airline interiors, sporting equipment, and organic systems like seashells and honeycombs; and various means of communicating and disseminating information. Asymptote presents a seamless trajectory of projects organized in a non-linear fashion and illustrated with installation photographs, collaged photographs, and computer-generated diagrams and environments. This two-volume work presents life and work of the English typographer Anthony Froshaug. "Typography & texts" concerns Froshaug's work. An introduction by Robin Kinross outlines the nature and achievement of Froshaug. Then a selection of his printed products is shown with extended critical captions, followed by layouts that he made as instructions. At the centre of this book is the section of 'texts' all the writings that Froshaug published in his lifetime or which exist in manuscript in some adequately finished state. This volume concludes with a catalogue of work, bibliographies, index (to both volumes). The second volume, "Documents of a life" is not a biography, but rather a sequence of documents, mostly drawn from hitherto private sources, interspersed with explanation by the editor. Among these documents are autobiographical memories by Froshaug, as well as correspondence between him and a range of contemporaries. Notable correspondences represent his attempt in the 1940s to publish texts by Jan Tschichold, and his friendship with the writer Stefan Themerson. Memories by his friend Wolfgang Hildesheimer are preseted here for the first time in English. Froshaug’s periods as a one-man printer in Cornwall, adjacent to the artists at St Ives, are documented. The book also represents his seminal teaching work at the Central School of Arts & Crafts, the Hochschule für Gestaltung Ulm, the Royal College of Art, and Watford School of Art.

On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm, this book issued by the Ulmer Museum and the HfG-Archiv pays tribute to the school's pioneering accomplishments. Just in time for the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Hochschule für Gestaltung (School of Design, known as the HfG) in Ulm in 1953, this publication honors the pioneering work of its founding members Inge Scholl, Otl Aicher, and Max Bill. Founded on an antifascist impulse, the HfG encouraged the development of a democratic consciousness which was to influence design in general. Products were meant to be as long lived and functional as possible, acceptable with respect to social and ecological criteria, and to take into account changing political conditions and production technologies. The school's pedagogical concept, the so-called Ulm model, was characterized by a new system- oriented design methodology and the encouragement of interdisciplinary teamwork. The Ulm School of Design played a decisive role in establishing the idea of the professional "designer" in the form still valid today, and many designers who graduated from the HfG before its closure in 1968 are still teaching design-related subjects, thus carrying on the specific fundamental principles that empowered the HfG. Examples from design schools in Asia, North and South America, and India illustrate the effects of the design methods developed at Ulm.

Stephen Ramsay’s ''On the digital humanities'', a collection of essays spanning the personal to the polemic, is a spirited defense of the field of digital humanities. A founding figure in what was once known as 'humanities computing,' Ramsay has a well-known and contentious relationship with what is now called the digital humanities (DH). Here Ramsay collects and updates his most influential and notorious essays and speeches from the past fifteen years, considering DH from an array of practical and theoretical perspectives. The essays pursue a broad variety of themes, including the nature of data and its place in more conventional notions of text and interpretation, the relationship between the constraints of computation and the more open-ended nature of the humanities, the positioning of practical skills and infrastructures in both research and pedagogical contexts, the status of DH as a program for political and social action, and personal reflections on the author’s journey into the field as both a theorist and a technologist. The Nature of Landscape offers an inspiring, personal account of a quest into the meaning and background of the term ‘landscape’. The author, a landscape planner and designer currently teaching at Eindhoven University of Technology, researches the origins of landscape in our civilization and describes different points of view that have helped shape our opinions on landscape. For the author, our notion of landscape is focused around the terms 'nature versus culture' and 'native versus foreign'. These counterparts make up his 'mindscape diamond', a modified matrix that not only explains trends in landscape perception and design, but also helps to define developments in land use, architecture, urban planning and environmental art.
