Résumé:
After studying at University College Dublin, Níall McLaughlin moved to London, where in 1990 he set up his own office. Since then, he has developed a solid career, defined by a timeless language and an attentive dialogue with context. The latest issue of AV Monographs takes stock of his career with a selection of twenty of his main works. Featured in chronological order these key projects reflect a commitment to the discipline that makes no distinctions of scale or program. Floor plans of bold geometry and facades of tactile sensuality are as present in the domestic projects of Piper’s End and Goleen as they are in the large buildings for the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, as well as in the civic complexes in London and Limerick, in all of which shines the so very British spirit of honouring the past without ceasing to look in the direction of the future.

Résumé:
The French firm Lacaton & Vassal, established in Paris in 1987 by Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal, has designed private and social housing, cultural and academic institutions and public spaces that reflects its advocacy of social justice and sustainability. Here, the winners of the 2021 Pritzker Prize present their oeuvre of four decades through three guiding concepts. Free Space signifies their concern to achieve a generosity of scale; Transformation expresses their adage “never demolish, always add, transform, extend”; and Habiter describes their insistence on making space one’s own. Accordingly, this volume presents nine built works by the architects, showing the life and inhabitants of each building so as to convey its animation and adaptation as a tenanted structure.

Résumé:
Wood has a centuries-long tradition as well as a huge potential for future use as a highly versatile building material. ''Crafting wood'' presents newly gained knowledge on timber construction and on timber joints in particular. This book—illustrated with plans, sketches, and photographs—emerged from an international educational cooperation of the University of Liechtenstein in Vaduz, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology NTNU in Trondheim, and the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam. The program looked at a vast range of timber joints from different theoretical and practical perspectives. Students conceived and made by hand new joints that were then applied in prototypes for entire structures, also designed as part of the course, at a scale of 1:5. By analyzing this learning process, the book provides a new overview of the topic of timber joints in architecture through text and images.

This edition begins with a conversation with Pier Vittorio Aureli and MartinoTattara, the founders of Dogma, an architectural firm concerned with the relationship between architecture and the city. By focusing mostly on urban design and large-scale projects, they consult with municipalities and agencies for urban planning and architectural issues. Atypically, El Croquis is this time only featuring plans not yet constructed, including a model for a city of 4,000,000 Inhabitants, a proposal for 44 social housing units, and a prototype for boarding houses in London. Timely articles about urban transformation follow, including an interesting genealogy of housing for the laboring classes.

Résumé:
For many architects he is a landmark - Jean Prouvé, creator of the metal curtain wall, pioneer in its application and early initiator of industrialised building techniques. His unfailing ability to combine functional engineering achievements with artistic sensitivity commands recognition. The period covered in this latest volume is significant in many respects. The post-war years placed enormous demands on housing and school construction. In his Maxéville factory Prouvé developed pre-fabricated housing, facade panelling, light filtering and other systems on a large scale. He was inspired by the works of the automobile and aeronautics industry, developing new applications for aluminium, which he presented in the 1954 Aluminium Centenary Pavilion. Moreover, Prouvé's furnitures of this period have become valuable collectors' items, some of which are now being reissued under licence.

Résumé:
Published on the occasion of the exhibition at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery, this catalogue chronologically overviews more than 20 notable works by the Iraqi-British architect, spanning the 1980s to the present, and from small-scale to the MAXXI. The fragmented geometry of her neofuturistic buildings carries into other aspects of her work, and a range of exemplary product design by Hadid from the past decade is also featured. Interviews from 1995 and 2007 allow critical insight regarding Hadid’s own reflections on global economic shifts and their impact on architectural practice over time. An essay by Patrick Schumacher examines the singular architect’s legacy in further detail.

Résumé:
"The art of a chair is not its resemblance to art, but is partly its reasonableness, usefulness, and scale as a chair." This publication introduces readers to the furniture designs of renowned artist Donald Judd. Initiated by the renovation of his home and studio at 101 Spring Street in New York, and the difficulty Judd later had in furnishing his home in Marfa, Texas, these furn-iture designs exemplify the directness of form and presence for which his artworks are celebrated, as well as offering a distinct and unadorned functionality. In this book they are presented through detailed drawings and breakdowns of materials, alongside colour photography exploring their effect in situ. As well as surveying a central aspect of Judd's work, "Donald Judd Furniture" forms an eloquent mediation on functionality, form, and the possibilities of design in a world of mass-production.

His personal interactions with 1960s Southern Californian houses, the Pantheon, Hong Kong, rice terraces in Bali, and more determined his path as a designer. The architect’s own selected works (39 in total) span his career from 1982 until the present. Among these are numerous private homes, the Leica Ginza Showroom, the Zohiko Urushi Museum, and an annex project for Kyoto City Museum, plus temples, lounges, and even urban-scale planning projects.

Résumé:
The book introduces water as a building material to build unique, responsive-able structures and define a new paradigm for architecture and sustainable design. Architecture is based upon the misconception that strong is stable, both in sense of energy and structure, as an unchanged state of microclimate would require more material or insulation.Trans-structures are the opposite: building elements with the response-ability to change according to external conditions in order to maintain stability in terms of structure and/or energy. In this type of building, any effect (structural or thermal load) would generate an immediate affect (a response of the structure). Energy and weight would be counteracted and on a total scale, change would not occur. Such buildings are always in transition from one state to another, unlike conventional structures.
