Résumé:
Monospaced fonts originate from the typewriter and are characterized by the peculiarity that all letters, digits and characters have the same width. "Mono is the new black" discusses the function and aesthetics of this unique kind of typeface and deals with its cult status in the (mainly young) design scene. The aim of the handbook is to inform and inspire typographers, typeface developers, designers, as well as readers interested in culture in general with facts, analyses, expert positions, practical examples, and a comprehensive font collection. In a cultural-historical outline, the author first presents the historical aspects of this typeface and shows how closely intertwined type, technical progress, and social development are. In the middle section, he presents a selection of examples of the work of globally active designers and agencies with a focus on the many possible applications. The final section is a script compendium that provides a clear overview of 175 monospaced fonts and shows the changes that these distinctive monospaced fonts have undergone, from machine type to entirely digitally developed coding fonts.

Résumé:
Collaboration with the greatest botanists of his time, an instinctive humanitarianism, and a natural ingenuity in landscape design combined to make Thomas Jefferson a pioneer in American landscape architecture. Frederick D. Nichols and Ralph E. Griswold, in this close study of Jefferson’s many notes, letters, and sketches, present a clear and detailed interpretation of his extraordinary accomplishments in the field. "Thomas Jefferson, Landscape Architect" investigates the many influences on — and of — the Jeffersonian legacy in architecture. Jefferson’s personality, friendships, and convictions, complemented by his extensive reading and travels, clearly influenced his architectural work. His fresh approach to incorporating foreign elements into domestic designs, his revolutionary approach to relating the house to the surrounding land, and his profound influences on the architectural character of the District of Columbia are just a few of Jefferson’s contributions to the American landscape. Eighteenth- and nineteenth-century maps, plans, and drawings, as well as pictures of the species of trees that Jefferson used for his designs, generously illustrate the engaging narrative in "Thomas Jefferson, Landscape Architect".

Résumé:
Alberto Ponis "Costruire nella Natura" ("Building in Nature") analyses 22 buildings, highlighting the importance of drawing and photography as the first act of design, as in the Genius Loci series in which he photographed Sardinian vernacular architecture. This publication aims primarily to analyse of Alberto Ponis's work as a whole, including single-family houses and collective houses built in Palau and Costa Paradiso, investigating the relationship with the natural site formed by granite rocks, strawberry trees and holm oaks. These elements become part of the architecture, generating its form. Meticulous work in the Ponis Archive has revealed little-known materials, such as slides of trips to America to visit the Sea Ranch and the architecture of Louis Kahn; visits to Ronchamp and La Tourette and the architecture of Arno Jacobsen and Alvar Aalto. But above all, his letters with clients, the photographs Ponis took of his houses, the sketchbooks during site inspections, the Thought notes, his design vocabulary that he continually defined over time, right down to his "pictorial obsessions" for the Nervi marina and Bonifacio.

Résumé:
All of the libraries in the world-whether small or large, public or private-serve the same purpose: to preserve, cherish, or show off the riches of human knowledge. Now, for the first time, an internationally renowned photographer takes the reader on a journey to more than 20 of the most historic of these magical places, all architectural treasures. From the dramatic, baroque Library of the Institut de France in Paris, to the splendid Vatican Library in Rome; from the majestic Royal Library in El Escorial, Spain, to the famed New York Public Library, a Beaux-Arts masterpiece-here are some of the most exquisite libraries of the Western world. Included are national, scholarly, and religious libraries from 12 countries, which have in common a distinguished heritage and an architectural setting that emphasizes art and culture. The accompanying text traces the history of libraries to the present day, and describes how they came to serve famous personalities and men of letters. Libraries must be counted among civilization's crowning achievements; this elegant book is a fitting tribute to that accomplishment.

Résumé:
Gordon Matta-Clark has never been an easy artist to categorize or to explain. Although trained as an architect, he has been described as a sculptor, a photographer, an organizer of performances, and a writer of manifestos, but he is best known for "un-building" abandoned structures. In the brief span of his career, from 1968 to his early death in 1978, he created an oeuvre that has made him an enduring cult figure. In 2002, when Matta-Clark’s widow, Jane Crawford, put his archive on deposit at the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal, it revealed a new voice in the ongoing discussion of artist/architect Matta-Clark’s work: his own. Gwendolyn Owens and Philip Ursprung’s careful selection and ordering of letters, interviews, statements, and the now-famous art cards from the CCA as well as other sources deepens our understanding of one of the most original thinkers of his generation. This publication creates a multidimensional portrait that provides an opportunity for readers to explore and enjoy the complexity and contradiction that was Gordon Matta-Clark.

Résumé:
Her stories may be literal one-liners: the entirety of “Bloomington” reads, “Now that I have been here for a little while, I can say with confidence that I have never been here before.” Or they may be lengthier investigations of the havoc wreaked by the most mundane disruptions to routine: in “A Small Story About a Small Box of Chocolates,” a professor receives a gift of thirty-two small chocolates and is paralyzed by the multitude of options she imagines for their consumption. The stories may appear in the form of letters of complaint; they may be extracted from Flaubert’s correspondence; or they may be inspired by the author’s own dreams, or the dreams of friends. What does not vary throughout Can’t and Won’t, Lydia Davis’s fifth collection of stories, is the power of her finely honed prose. Davis is sharply observant; she is wry or witty or poignant. Above all, she is refreshing. Davis writes with bracing candor and sly humor about the quotidian, revealing the mysterious, the foreign, the alienating, and the pleasurable within the predictable patterns of daily life.
