Résumé:
From 1941 to 1964, House Beautiful magazine’s crusading editor-in-chief Elizabeth Gordon introduced and promoted her vision of 'good design' and 'better living' to an extensive middle-class American readership. Her innovative magazine-sponsored initiatives, including House Beautiful’s Pace Setter House Program and the Climate Control Project, popularized a 'livable' and decidedly American version of postwar modern architecture. Gordon’s devotion to what she called the American Style attracted the attention of Frank Lloyd Wright, who became her ally and collaborator. Gordon’s editorial programs reshaped ideas about American living and, by extension, what consumers bought, what designers made, and what manufacturers brought to market. This incisive assessment of Gordon’s influence as an editor, critic, and arbiter of domestic taste reflects more broadly on the cultures of consumption and identity in postwar America. Nearly 200 images are featured, including work by Ezra Stoller, Maynard Parker, and Julius Shulman. This book champions an often-neglected source - the consumer magazine - as a key tool for deepening our understanding of mid-century architecture and design.

Résumé:
In the spring of 2010, the Brooklyn-based quarterly magazine Cabinet invited poet and cultural critic Wayne Koestenbaum to begin writing a regular column. Entitled "Legend," the column had a highly unusual premise. Every three months, the editors of the magazine would ask Koestenbaum to write one or more extended captions for a single photograph with which they had provided him; drawn from obscure vernacular, commercial and scientific sources, all of the images were unfamiliar to the author. After 18 installments, Koestenbaum concluded his column in the winter of 2015. 'Notes on Glaze', featuring an introductory essay by the author, collects all the "Legend" columns, as well as their accompanying photographs. Refusing the distancing language of critical disinterest, Koestenbaum’s columns always locate the author in intimate proximity to the subjects portrayed in the photographs and to the impossibly variegated cast of characters—ranging from Debbie Reynolds to Duccio, the Dalai Lama to Barbra Streisand; from Hegel to Pee-wee Herman, and Emily Dickinson to Cicciolina—that pass through these texts.

In recent years, an extensive collection of drawings was discovered in Andy Warhol’s estate. Dating from the 1950s, the artist’s early years in New York, the drawings took as their inspiration magazine photographs and illustrations—many from LIFE magazine—and provide further insight into Warhol’s unique working method. Andy Warhol: The “LIFE” Years 1949–1959 publishes a selection of these newly discovered drawings alongside the original photographs and illustrations. Drawing was an important part of Warhol’s early practice, and he was particularly inspired by the rich visual language found in LIFE and its contemporaries. Many of his drawings were copied with his trademark “blotted line” technique, a basic method of printmaking in which Warhol traced projected photographic images onto paper and then blotting the inked figures to create variations on a theme. Presenting more than one hundred of these drawings, including many that have never before been published, the book also offers an informative and accessible discussion of Warhol’s working method and the cultural setting in which he created the drawings.

Archigram, the magazine published irregularly between 1961 and 1970, and the name of the group that created it, is among the most significant phenomena to emerge in post-war architectural culture. The wired environments first advertised in the magazine's pages formulated an architectural vocabulary of metamorphosis and obsolescence. This vocabulary cross-pollinated industrial and digital technology at the same time as complex systems were becoming commercially available and more widely used.
