Résumé:
The artists Cy Twombly and Sally Mann may at first seem an unlikely pairing. He was a leading contemporary artist who defied easy categorization, a painter and sculptor whose enigmatic work often referenced mythology and epic poetry. She is a photographer with an uncanny ability to tap raw human emotion, whether depicting members of her family or the landscape of the American South. What they had in common was place—both grew up in rural Lexington, Virginia, where Twombly kept a studio and produced some of his most important work until his death in 2011, and where Mann has lived and worked all her life.Over the course of several years, Mann photographed inside Twombly’s studio. The result is a rare insider’s view of Twombly’s process—we sense him in the room at every turn, although he is always just beyond the frame—and a poetic dialogue between two artistic visions.

Résumé:
Today, architecture in China is at a watershed. Over the last decade, rapid urbanisation and the burgeoning economy turned the country into a playground for the world’s signature architects, making it possible to realise extravagant forms and structures at a vast scale. The Chinese government has now drawn a line under this phenomenon by issuing a directive calling an end to the ‘oversized, xenocentric, weird’ buildings devoid of character or cultural heritage that have sprung up across the country, requiring that urban architecture be 'suitable, economic, green and pleasing to the eye'. This government directive comes at a time when homegrown architecture has become increasingly self-assured and reflective in its approach. A new generation of architects in China in their 30s and 40s are emerging, and in a wholly contemporary way they are exploring local responses to often bewildering urban and rural conditions and serious social and environmental challenges

Résumé:
Detailed history of one of America’s most popular architectural styles–the Cape Cod house–from its beginnings more than six centuries ago to the present. The story starts in rural England where yeomen and tradesmen built their small one to one-and-a-half story timber framed cottages. The first settlers that came to the New World and settled in Massachusetts built comparable cottages in the 1620s. After explaining the three basic variations–half cape, three quarter cape, and full cape–the book examines more than 100 historic houses spread throughout southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod. Comparing archival images, building plans, and present-day photographs, the book considers different aspects of the evolution of this house style. This study is complete with more than 600 images detailing the interiors and exteriors of these classic homes. A must for anyone interested in architecture, Cape Cod, and the most admired of American homes.

Résumé:
At the foot of the Argentine Andes, bulldozers are destroying forests and homes to create soy fields in an area already strewn with rubble from previous waves of destruction and violence. Based on ethnographic research in this region where the mountains give way to the Gran Chaco lowlands, Gastón R. Gordillo shows how geographic space is inseparable from the material, historical, and affective ruptures embodied in debris. His exploration of the significance of rubble encompasses lost cities, derelict train stations, overgrown Jesuit missions and Spanish forts, stranded steamships, mass graves, and razed forests. Examining the effects of these and other forms of debris on the people living on nearby ranches and farms, and in towns, Gordillo emphasizes that for the rural poor, the rubble left in the wake of capitalist and imperialist endeavors is not romanticized ruin but the material manifestation of the violence and dislocation that created it.

Résumé:
Dorothea Lange (1895–1965) aimed to make pictures that were, in her words, ''important and useful.'' Her decades-long investigation of how photography could articulate people’s core values and sense of self helped to expand our current understanding of portraiture and the meaning of documentary practice. Lange’s sensitive portraits showing the common humanity of often marginalized people were pivotal to public understanding of vast social problems in the twentieth century. Compassion guided Lange’s early portraits of Indigenous people in Arizona and New Mexico from the 1920s and 1930s, as well as her depictions of striking workers, migrant farmers, rural African Americans, Japanese Americans in internment camps, and the people she met while traveling in Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Drawing on new research, the authors look at Lange’s roots in studio portraiture and demonstrate how her influential and widely seen photographs addressed issues of identity as well as social, economic, and racial inequalities—topics that remain as relevant for our times as they were for hers.

This pubication is dedicated to the work of Adelfo Scaranello, an architect from Besançon, France, whose singular constructions are presented in their context : a fishing cabin, a covered farmer’s market, both included among the new commissions of the Fondation de France. Also included are a school, a barn, a residence, and examples of buildings employing natural energy sources. Each project reveals Scaranello’s conceptual process which is intrinsically related to site, materials, prerequisites, and landscape and which surpasses any notion of local versus international architecture.

Résumé:
Born just fourteen months apart, one in London and the other in rural Suffolk, J.M.W. Turner and John Constable went on to change the face of British art. The two men have routinely been seen as polar opposites, not least by their peers. Differing in temperament, background, beliefs and vision, they created images as dissimilar as their personalities. Yet in many ways they were fellow travellers. As children of the late 18 th century, both faced the same challenges and opportunities. Above all, they shared common cause as champions of a distinctively British art. Through their work, they fought for the recognition and appreciation of landscape painting – and in doing so ensured their reputations were forever intertwined and interlinked. Nicola Moorby offers us a fresh perspective on two extraordinary artists, uncovering the layers of fiction that have embellished and disguised their greatest achievements. For Turner & Constable is not just a tale of two artists; it is also the story of the triumph of landscape painting.

Résumé:
For over 35 years, with the emphasis on both personal experience and ideas, Richard Long has made art in many places around the world by making walks in rural and wilderness landscapes. His simple and direct engagement is realised by leaving and recording traces of his journeys, creating works concerned with time, movement and locality. This book accompanies an exhibition of new works by Long that span the variety of media he employs, including photographs, sculptures, and mud and text works made directly on the gallery walls. The landscapes walked to create the work include Galicia, Brittany and his recent travels to India, where he spent time among the Warli tribe with the artist Jivya Soma Mashe. The catalogue illustrations consist of Long’s recent works both in the gallery and in landscapes, and the text explores Long’s relationship to landscape as well his art historical significance, focussing on the works featured in this exhibition.
