Working in Germany in the aftermath of World War II, he explored a radically expanded concept of art through a practice that ranged from performative actions to large-scale sculptural ensembles. While some contemporaries found his claim that “everyone is an artist” liberating, even revolutionary, others accused him of fostering a dangerous cult of personality. In "Joseph Beuys and History", the first rigorous art historical study of the artist in English, Daniel Spaulding presents a striking new interpretation of Beuys’s work and career. By putting Beuys in the context of Germany’s postwar recovery, Spaulding shows that the artist’s superimposed biological, political, and economic metaphors offered a powerful way to think about the trajectory of human freedom, the place of art in capitalist modernity, and the possibility of an ecological aesthetics. At the same time, his oeuvre’s disquieting echoes of the Nazi past suggest that not everything could be reconciled in what Beuys called “social sculpture.”

Nikken Sekkei’s designers have worked on numerous building and urban design projects in Japan. When pursuing their work, what do they rely on? And what have they inherited from their predecessors? As we edited and prepared this issue for publication, we became increasingly interested in Nikken Sekkei’s floor plans and layout plans. Many of the designers who appear in this issue stressed the importance of floor plans and layout plans as a tool that anyone working hard on a project design can use to explore the needs of society and the client. This attitude toward design may be something that they feel they must pass on from one generation to the next as they grow in influence. Every project profile in this issue includes a 1/750 scale floor and layout plan.

The architectural ringleader was Manuel Gomes da Costa, an Algarvian by birth, who had gone to South America in search of work but came back in the 1950s to transform the city. Inspired by the work of earlier architects, including Le Corbusier and Oscar Niemeyer, Costa and his colleagues set about creating a Modernist paradise in the southern sun. Breuer was extremely prolific and produced a wide-ranging output that extends from large-scale projects to furniture. A major part of his oeuvre consists of single-family dwellings, many of which are found in the United States. This issue of "2G" brings together a selection of his more important houses: from the first examples at the end of the 1930s, in which the influence of the Bauhaus is still very strong, to those of the 1960s in which Breuer has encountered his own highly original language. Works and projects include: Hagerty House, Cohasset; Breuer I House, Lincoln; Robinson House, Williamstown; Breuer II House, New Canaan; Breuer Cottage, Wellfleet; Kepes Cottage, Wellfleet; Stillman Beach Cottage, Wellfleet; Wise Cottage, Wellfleet; Exhibition House in the MOMA Garden; Pocantico, Tarrytown; Clark House, Orange; Pack House, Scarsdale; Grieco House, Andover; Hooper House, Baltimore; Starkey House, Duluth; Stillman II House, Lichfield.
