This eighth issue of The Funambulist Magazine, dedicated to the police, can be read in continuity with Issue 04 (March-April 2016), which was focused on carceral environments. Its axiomatic editorial line is resolutely the same: just as there cannot be “better prisons,” there cannot be “better police,” at least not within the logics through which they are currently operating in a majority of the world’s societies. In this regard, the numerous murders of Native and Black bodies by the United States police, the violence of the Apartheid police in Jerusalem against Palestinians, the murderous operations of the Brazilian military police in the favelas, or the legalized abuse of power by the French and Turkish police during ongoing states of emergency; not as “police brutality” that would require reforms but, rather, as the very essence of policing itself, which calls for abolition.

Résumé:
In this intimate archive, the contemporary Mexican photographer duo Lake Verea record their pilgrimages, made over the course of nearly two decades, to the house of Mexican architect Luis Barragán (1902–88). As devotees of the architect, the duo began photographing the modernist mecca in 2006, endeavoring to approach as closely as possible to Barragán's spirit. The artists sat in his chairs, opened his closets, listened in silence and kissed in the house's enchanted garden. Modern Barragán compiles the fruits of their reverent labor. The photographs capture the house across a myriad of atmospheric conditions—in daylight, under the light of the full moon, by streetlight and against stormy skies. Flash photography lends the house a spectral quality; rubbed with aluminum sheets, the walls reveal their hidden textures, evoking the hidden memories contained within the home.

Résumé:
Preservation is Overtaking Us brings together two lectures given by Rem Koolhaas at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, along with a response (framed as a supplement to the original lectures) by Jorge Otero-Pailos. In the first essay Koohaas describes alternative strategies for preserving Beijing, China. The second talk marks the inaugural Paul Spencer Byard lecture, named in celebration of the longtime professor of Historic Preservation at GSAPP. These two lectures trace key moments of Koolhaas’ thinking on preservation, including his practice’s entry into China and the commission to redevelop the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. In a format well known to Koolhaas’ readers, Otero-Pailos reworks the lectures into a retroactive manifesto, using it to interrogate OMA’s work from within the discipline of preservation. This is the first book in the new GSAPP Transcripts series.

Résumé:
The steep increases recently witnessed in both business and leisure travel have helped provoke a new variety in hotel interiors, and designers from various disciplines are now establishing a range of design solutions catering to the widely differing demands of each client type, giving new identities to hotels. From the boutique hotel to the airport atrium, the urban retreat to the contemporary resort, the immensity of Vegas to the intimacy of Beirut, "Hotel Interior Structures" presents a wide range of these new design trends found in present-day hotel interiors. This volume aims to offer architects, interior designers and hotel owners - as well as those with a more general interest in the use of interior design detail to create a particular atmosphere or living experience - a valuable insight into the what, why and how of current design directions for hotels across the globe. Identifying ten hotel types that have been conceived within the last ten years, it features text, plans and detailed photography of a selection of hotels of each type, as well as interviews with some of the key figures involved. With examples of hotels in major cities and resorts worldwide - from London, Paris and New York to locations in Japan, Egypt and Lebanon - it gives a complete picture of the creativeness and imaginativeness of hotel interior design at the beginning of the 21st century.

This collection of never-before-published talks at one of the leading art schools in the United States, documents an exciting decade in the development of contemporary art and arts education, featuring interviews with renowned artists, curators, and writers. Introduced in 1986 as an initiative by Richard Hertz (Chair, Academic Studies, 1979–2003), the Graduate Art Department of the ArtCenter College of Design, located in Pasadena, California, celebrates its thirtieth anniversary in 2016. This book documents the first decade of the department’s existence by presenting a selection from over three hundred talks, including a 1990 symposium conducted by renowned curator and art historian Robert Storr, as well as twelve talks from its artists and critics lecture series known as the Graduate Seminar. Discussions between students and faculty members range from what it means to be an artist and the changing role of art in society, to how artists function within an academic setting.

Résumé:
To continue to develop existing building types and do so in an intelligent way is one of the crucial tasks in the field of residential building. For the success of the individual design as well as for ensuring that tried and tested structures can be utilized, repeated, and varied in a wide range of situations, a deeper understanding of the underlying types is indispensable. For this typology of residential buildings, the authors have developed systematic new presentations of the most innovative types. Each individual volume lays out the possibilities for using and transforming a particular form of residential structure. The third volume deals with the types of the townhouse. It will address the following topics among others: single- versus multistory construction, density, privacy versus publicity, and the connection of living and working. Within each type, variants are distinguished according to how they organize space, their number of floors, etc. The range of possible solutions is presented in uniform ground plans newly drawn to scale.

Résumé:
Affordable housing is an enduring political challenge. Cities have endeavored to set international standards for this important field of architecture since the 1920s. Planners must work within a socially motivated tradition to find exemplary solutions both at the political and architectural level. This building catalogue documents over 130 residential buildings dedicated to affordable housing. It presents floor plans, large photos, key data, and clear diagrams, providing a comprehensive overview of the solutions being tested today. The publication is rounded off with ten affordable housing concepts that were designed as part of the ''Housing for All'' competition, organized by the Frankfurt Department of Planning and Housing, the Deutsches Architekturmuseum, and ABG Frankfurt Holding. Renowned architecture practices based in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and France were invited to submit design concepts for building sites in the Hilgenfeld area of Frankfurt. These concepts will reignite the contemporary discourse on affordable housing – in Frankfurt and beyond.

Résumé:
The New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape was one of those rare exhibitions that permanently alters how an art form is perceived. Held at the International Museum of Photography in Rochester, New York, in January 1975, curator William Jenkins brought together ten contemporary photographers: Robert Adams, Lewis Baltz, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Joe Deal, Frank Gohlke, Nicholas Nixon, John Schott, Stephen Shore and Henry Wessel, Jr. Signaling the emergence of a new approach to landscape, New Topographics has since come to be understood as marking a paradigm shift, for the show occurred just as photography ceased to be an isolated, self-defined practice and took its place within the contemporary art world. In this vital reassessment of the genre, essays by Britt Salvesen and Alison Nordström accompany illustrations of selected works from the 1975 exhibition, with installation views and contextual comparisons, to demonstrate both the historical significance of New Topographics and its continued relevance today.

Résumé:
This researched and illustrated study catalogs all of Latrobe's domestic commissions, offering an authoritative treatment of the concepts, designs, and unique interior and exterior features of his houses. Benjamin Henry Latrobe, an English émigré and the first professional architect of international stature to practice in the United States, invented an American house type for the new democratic republic. Calling upon his diverse education and travel experiences in Europe and his training with eminent architects and engineers in London, Latrobe responded to American manners and climate by producing what he called his "rational house," an application of Enlightenment thinking to the design of a proper living environment for the citizens of the world's most recent democracy. Establishing a new benchmark in Latrobe studies, Michael W. Fazio and Patrick A. Snadon extend their analysis to Latrobe's training and career in England and Europe, his principles of design, and his methods of architectural practice. The authors trace the evolution of his design thinking through analytical essays on all of his major domestic commissions and conclude with a summary discussion of his position within the international architectural scene, his design theories, the integration of interior design and engineering into his architectural practice, and the preservation of his houses.

Résumé:
The design of infrastructural networks—that is, roads, railways and any system that enables flow within a structure such as a city—is among urban design's foremost tasks. Around the globe, the awareness of enhanced infrastructure fluidity as a catalyst for economic development is rising. The Landscape of Contemporary Infrastructure investigates how infrastructure design determines the organization and flow of the inhabited landscape—as an agency of enhanced mobility, as a design feature contributing to the character of a city and as a sound theoretical approach to a positive experience of collective space. These issues are explored in four chapters that catalogue these approaches, each chapter buttressed with key projects from the world's most important designers in this field, including Arata Isozaki, Paul Andreu, Xaveer De Geyter, Jean Nouvel and Ricardo Bofill. The authors demonstrate how the creative potential of architecture, landscape architecture and urban design is essential to the effective flow of infrastructural networks.
