Résumé:
In the fall of 2009, The Museum of Modern Art and MoMA PS1 selected five interdisciplinary teams of architects, engineers and landscape designers to propose solutions to the effects of climate change on New York's waterfront. The resulting proposals, exhibited at MoMA in 2010 in the exhibition "Rising Currents: Projects for New York's Waterfront," emphasize "soft" infrastructure interventions that would make New York City and its surrounding areas more ecologically sound and more resilient in responding to rising sea levels and storm surges. These innovative projects include the creation of salt- and freshwater wetlands, a Venice-like aqueous landscape, habitable piers and man-made islands, and a protective reef of living oysters. Published to document the exhibition, "Rising Currents: Projects for New York's Waterfront" presents these five projects in detail through essays that summarize the innovative workshop and exhibition, the dialogues they engendered with outside experts and political figures involved in regional planning, and the climate change and urban planning implications of the proposed solutions.

Résumé:
Known until recently for such public facilities as the Zamora Municipal Museum, the Castellón Fine Arts Museum and the León Auditorium, over the last few years Mansilla + Tuñón have developed a number of projects in which urban scale and the problems of inhabiting in the contemporary city assume more and more importance. In this issue of 2G we present the (almost) complete works of these Madrid architects, works grouped around the basic ideas which define their projects, namely memory and the city, system and restrictions, sameness and difference, and lastly trace and landscape. These concepts are not watertight entities, however, but are present in each and every one of their designs as intersecting references, and they enable us to dissect the architects' way of thinking and influencing reality. Similarly, the articles accompanying the presentation of their buildings scrutinise in kaleidoscopic form the modus operandi of their work.

Résumé:
Between the years 1950 and 1972, when Paris was in the twilight of its classical period, pilot and photographer Roger Henrard preserved the city he knew and loved from the seat of a single-engine American army surplus Piper Cub. Henrard used a high-speed plate camera to systematically document the city from its outskirts to its centre. His photographs show not only Paris's stations, museums, department stores, and housing projects but also its urban fabric and interconnections - the tightly knit medieval districts as well as the rectilinear geometry of the Haussmanian boulevards. "Above Paris" is Henrard's study of the urban landscape of Paris and its best-known monuments. Images, grouped by themes such as the course of the Seine, the main roads, the stations, and the neighborhoods of Paris give a clear overview of the city's layout. Maps at the beginning of each chapter orient the reader.

Résumé:
Over the past two decades, Roy Arden has become one of Canadas most respected artists. Along with that of Jeff Wall, Ian Wallace, Rodney Graham and Stan Douglas, his work has contributed to Vancouvers reputation as a vital centre for contemporary photographic art. This important book looks at Ardens unique approach to photography and his investigations into modern city life. Ardens work can be divided into three periods. From 1981 to 1985 he produced Fragments, lyrical colour portraits and urban details. The years 1985 to 1990 were dedicated to what Arden calls his meta-photography, art about photography and its history. Since 1990 he has focused on the landscape of the economy in images of the city and its never-ending transformations. This handsome catalogue includes two major scholarly texts about Ardens work along with shorter texts by six artists, curators and critics.

Résumé:
Walking, that most basic of human actions, was transformed in the twentieth century by Surrealism, the Situationist International, and Fluxus into a tactic for revolutionizing everyday life. Each group chose locations in the urban landscape as sites—from the flea markets and bars of Paris to the sidewalks of New York—and ambulation as the essential gesture. Keep Walking Intently traces the meandering and peculiar footsteps of these avant-garde artists as they moved through the city, encountering the marvelous, studying the environment, and re-enchanting the banal. Art historian Lori Waxman reveals the radical potential that walking holds for us all.

The first of two features in this issue presents five projects recently designed by contemporary Chilean offices, all manifestations of an architectural style meant to enhance life in isolation, away from the city and embedded in the natural landscape. Highlighted are houses by Pezo Von Ellrichshausen, Max Núñez, Ampuero Yutronic, Schmidt Associates Architects, and Felipe Assadi Arquitectos. The second feature, entitled ''Against the Typology'', explores five new manifestations in housing for students, showing how the collective dynamics and programme inherent to these buildings and spatial sequences has influenced the architectural conception to the point of characterising it.

Résumé:
Michael Herzfeld focuses on Rome’s historic Monti district and the wrenching dislocation caused by rapid economical, political, and social change. Evicted from Eternity tells the story of the gentrification of Monti—once the architecturally stunning home of a community of artisans and shopkeepers now displaced by an invasion of rapacious real estate speculators, corrupt officials, dithering politicians, deceptive clerics, and shady thugs. As Herzfeld picks apart the messy story of Monti’s transformation, he ranges widely over many aspects of life there and in the rest of the city, richly depicting the uniquely local landscape of globalization in Rome.

Résumé:
Thomas Phifer is an award-winning American architect based in New York City. As seen in the ten houses and twelve cultural buildings featured in this monographic issue, the architect’s work engages with the landscape in a manner that is deeply respectful. Whether in the operable sunshades in Taghkanic House, the thick concrete eaves overhanging the ephemeral walls of Hudson Valley House III, or the complexly multilayered canopy of Moody Amphitheater, the quiet, contemplative quality of Phifer’s approach emerges from a scientific understanding of site, climate, and light. Insightful essays by Susana Ventura and the architect himself complete this engrossing profile.

Résumé:
Toronto has been called the Estonian capital abroad, because it is where the largest and most active community of Estonian immigrants was located. Revolutionary in its architecture and social aims, modernism’s post-war emergence was at odds with the cautious, evolutionary nature of Canadian culture. But in the context of growing internationalism, a large number of Estonians began to find success in private practice, influencing Toronto’s cultural landscape and new ideas in architectural discourse. The largely untold story of their remarkable impact on the city and their contribution to an emerging Canadian identity has driven the research presented in this volume.
