Résumé:
In the 1970s, a void opened at the heart of architecture. In hotels, offices, public buildings, and commercial centers, the atrium emerged globally to challenge the modernist legacies of form and function, altering the pattern and experience of cities. While often appearing at vast scale and to striking effect, the atrium also became omnipresent and mundane. In this lively critique, Charles Rice charts the atrium's appearance in the 1970s and its development through the 1980s, as it accompanied profound shifts in the discipline and practice of architecture. During this period, architectural practice especially in the United States and United Kingdom was changing rapidly, due in part to the manifold effects of deregulation. All aspects of the way buildings were designed, developed, regulated, built, managed, and occupied were being reshaped. A practice guided by the progressive tenets of modernism was being turned into a professional service fully integrated within neoliberal social and economic imperatives. As Rice shows, the atrium gives this story a distinct spatial and material figure, one that offers an inside view of architecture in transformation.

Résumé:
Across Europe, cities are rapidly changing. How to account for the requirements of culture and humanity amid urban planners' brisk intentions? Hans Venhuizen is a specialist in what he calls culture-based planning, which takes existing culture - architecture, art and the contemporary culture of an area's inhabitants - as the point of departure for planning efforts. Venhuizen is well known for his use of ingenious large-scale social games to identify the culture and explore the interests at stake: one such game, called "Life, the Game," involved 20 participants in reenacting the entire life cycle. This publication presents Venhuizen's working practices and shows how they can be applied by anybody (citizens, planners, artists, architects, local authorities, administrators) working in spatial planning, architecture, community arts or other creative industries. Charles Landry, author of The Creative City (2000) and The Art of City Making (2006), contributes an introduction.

Résumé:
This publication looks at Fez, Morocco's famous former capital and today its second-largest city. Based on a recent research program conducted by EPFL's Laboratory Basel (laba), it investigates how these clashes have marked the city's socioeconomic structure and urban fabric, and whether or not it offers alternative and relevant means of human association and community. Given the growing stream of large-scale international investment, the constant enticement of tourism, and a worldwide revival of nationalism, Laba's student's and researchers were looking for tiny cues, nagging doubts, and signs of the fusion between form and life, raising questions about identity, authenticity, tradition, the globalisation of culture, and the use of local resources. Their findings are visualised in the book in striking images, graphics and maps. Students' proposals for architectural interventions addressing these issues are presented through images and plans.

Résumé:
When a cousin of mine told me his seven-year old could paint a Picasso, I told him probably, but he couldn't do the back," writes Brazilian conceptual artist Vik Muniz about his Verso project. The series consists of obsessively faithful three-dimensional trompe l'oeil reproductions--using period hardware in a 1:1 scale--of the backs of such iconic works as Picasso's "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon," van Gogh's "Starry Night" and Seurat's "La Grande Jatte," including every scratch, scribble, label, trace of tape and faded pencil notation found on the original. For six years, Muniz worked in partnership with the curatorial and conservation departments of New York's MOMA and Guggenheim museums, the Art Institute of Chicago and a team of craftsman, artists, forgers and technicians to realize this project. Verso also introduces texts by essayist Luc Sante and MOMA curator Eve Respini.

Résumé:
Photographer, designer, architect and author on topics ranging from winter sports to the history of photography, Carlo Mollino (1905–1973) accomplished himself in a dizzying array of fields. The diversity and scale of his output often makes it seem somewhat daunting, but this volume coheres Mollino’s prolificness into an appetizing and eminently approachable whole, by examining it across five inventively themed chapters: “Choreography,” “Montage,” “Publications,” “Display” and “Appropriations.” “Choreography” looks at Mollino’s love of motion in his customizations of airplanes and racing cars and his designs for the Lutrario dance hall in Turin. The “Montage” chapter examines Mollino’s architectural photomontages and other uses of photography; “Publications” reproduces a wealth of Mollino first editions, magazine spreads and works on paper; “Display” reveals the influence of Surrealism on Mollino’s interior displays, and also includes his erotic Polaroids; and “Appropriation” looks at his photographs of interior décor.

Résumé:
The guest editors, Jonathan Schwinge and Ian Abley of the London based research organisation audacity, call for development on a bold scale. They argue that by rapidly super-sizing the built environment society is not made vulnerable to natural or man-made hazards, and that design innovation surpasses bio-mimicry. Designers can learn from materials scientists working at the smallest of scales, and from systems manufacturers with ambitions at the largest. This issue calls for creative thinking about typologies and topologies, and considers what that also means for Africa, China, and Russia. Megacities everywhere demand integration of global systems of transport, utilities and IT in gigantic structures, constantly upgraded, scraping both the sky and the ground, outward into the sea.

Résumé:
The sites and stories of this publication shift our perception of what defines New York, placing the passion, determination, defeats, and victories of its people at the core. Delving into the histories of New York's five boroughs, you will encounter enslaved Africans in revolt, women marching for equality, workers on strike, musicians and performers claiming streets for their art, and neighbors organizing against landfills and industrial toxins and in support of affordable housing and public schools. The streetscapes that emerge from these groups' struggles bear the traces, and this book shows you where to look to find them. This book expands the scope and scale of traditional guidebooks, providing an equitable exploration of the diverse communities throughout the city. Through the stories of over 150 sites across the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island as well as thematic tours and contemporary and archival photographs, a people’s New York emerges, one in which collective struggles for justice and freedom have shaped the very landscape of the city.

Résumé:
The influence on the interplay of technical progress, imagination and functional variety in footbridges are different from those affecting large-scale bridges. This fact has resulted in an exhaustible variety of distinctive design, as is beautifully illustrated by the selection of footbridges shown in this book. Essays clearly explain the technical aspects and the aesthetic potential of different structure designs. Footbridges contains detailed presentations of 90 european bridges, with text, comprehensive and detail plans, and photographs taken especially for the volume. With projects by Arup, Jürg Conzett, Foster and Partners, Happold, Schlaich Bergermann and Partners, Wilkinson Eyre, Jiri Strasky and others. The examples are organized chronologically in thematically focused chapters: lightweight bridges, moving bridges, covered bridges, taut-ribbon suspension bridges, arch bridges, etc. For those whose curiosity is aroused by the insight given into this type of bridge building, a compilation of 120 more footbridges, listed by location, provide a starting point for further investigation.

Résumé:
Space influences us and we influence space. Within the infinite ''space of possibilities'' of architecture, PPAG architects are permanently searching for relevance and social utility, tracking down the architectural expression of the respective society, the ''necessary new'' in all its complexity. The exhibition is a plea for an unbiased, brave look at architecture and urban development. A view that sees development as a necessity, even if it surprises and irritates at first glance. Especially in view of the current global challenges, we need the courage to take alternative paths. The office's work is based on trust in the collective planning abilities; on the fact that through intensive engagement and thinking ahead, solutions can be found for a good future for all of us. The diversity of the''‘space of possibilities'' is presented in a special way in the exhibition of PPAG architects at the Aedes Architecture Forum. The projects presented push the boundaries and exhaust their realm, regardless of typology, scale, age, price range or realisation – in Ecuador, Northern Macedonia, Norway, Yakutsk, Vienna or Berlin.
