Résumé:
'Fragments of Repair' is the fourth publication in BAK’s publishing series BASICS which revisits fundamental questions and urgencies of our time—the “basics”—and seeks to develop afresh the building blocks of lexicons, tactics, scenarios, and relations that enable action in contemporary conditions. Today’s entwined crises reveal deep-seated wounds that issue from historical colonialisms and present-day authoritarianisms, economic disparity and growing racial violence, and the abuses inflicted on vulnerable populations and the planet. To address this disquieting chaos, this book, co-conceptualized by artist Kader Attia with curators Maria Hlavajova and Wietske Maas, offers a collection of long- and short-form essays, visual essays, and conversations on decolonial repair as both a tool and a tactic of engagement with the current state of the world.

Résumé:
Fires burn around the world. Systemic discrimination persists, precarity is increasing, and the modern democratic project faces challenges from all sides. Art writing helps us to understand art, which in turn helps us to understand such crises. But art writing itself is in crisis. Newspapers and magazines offer fewer channels than ever for independent art criticism, persistent institutional biases exclude the positions of many, and a proliferation of platforms presents opportunities and challenges in equal measure. This volume presents writing by established and emerging writers who address the social and political dimensions of art and art writing in the contemporary context and the ways in which new art writing and publishing practices promote critical engagement among readerships as never before.

Résumé:
Magazine publishing is an exercise in ephemerality and transience; each issue goes out in the world only to be rendered obsolete by the next. To publish a magazine is to enter into a heightened relationship with the present moment. During the 1960s and 1970s, magazines became an important new site of artistic practice, functioning as an alternative exhibition space for the dematerialized practices of conceptual art. Artists created works expressly for these mass-produced, hand-editioned pages, using the ephemerality and the materiality of the magazine to challenge the conventions of both artistic medium and gallery. In this publication, Gwen Allen looks at the most important of these magazines in their heyday (the 1960s to the 1980s) and compiles a comprehensive, illustrated directory of hundreds of others.

Résumé:
Over the last few decades the term "bootlegging"—a practice once relegated to smugglers and copyright infringers—has become understood as a creative act. Debates about homage, appropriation, and theft that are common in the art world, are now being held in the spheres of corporate branding, social media, and the creative industry as a whole. Today, bootlegging has become fetishized as an aesthetic in and of itself, influencing everything from underground record labels to DIY T-shirts, publishing ideologies, to acts of high fashion détournement. "Unlicensed" contains twenty-one interviews with a range of creative practitioners on the topic of bootlegging. The conversations in "Unlicensed" investigate bootlegging’s creative and critical potential, and explore new ways bootlegging can be deployed in order to thrive as an impactful cultural force.

Gio Ponti (1891–1979) was a giant of Italian Modernism, contributing to a multitude of fields: architecture, industrial design, furniture design, education, art criticism and publishing. From 1923 to 1930, Ponti served as the artistic director of the now cult Italian tableware manufacturer Richard Ginori. In 1928, he founded the internationally renowned magazine Domus, which, apart from a break in the 1940s, he continued to direct for the rest of his life. In the postwar era, Ponti and his associates Antonio Fornaroli and Alberto Rosselli shaped the architectural image of Milan but were also active across the globe from Caracas to Tehran, Denver, Islamabad and Eindhoven. "More than one: Gio Ponti" delves into the many components of Ponti’s creative contribution to the 20th century and traces his enduring influence in Italy and across the globe.

Résumé:
This outstanding collection of vivid political graphics from Argentina's Left Wing spans decades of political struggle--from woodcuts to desktop publishing. Flags are raised, workers are lionized, headlines blare from La Favilla, L'Agigatore, L'Amico del Popolo, La Questione Sociale, L'Allarme, Umanita Nova, Mundo Nuevo, El Burro, and Einstein, and a lion roars from the logo of La Protesta. The yellowed sheet music for a "Himno al 10 de Mayo" is preserved, as are a flier for Sacco and Vanzetti, a pileup of anarchy logos, many moving examples of homespun graffiti, and a collection of political cartoons, including one in which Labor pushes the pedals while Capital rides on the handlebars--with a champagne bucket. This chunky and cheeky volume is a must-have for anyone interested in graphic design, as well as left-wing politics.

Coinciding with 150 years since its publication, its first translation into English is being presented along with the publishing online at urbanization.org with the statistics transformed into interactive graphics and open data, with the aim of expanding the knowledge of Cerda`'s work and encouraging debate on the process of "urbanization" in the future.
