Philippe Starck describes him as a "mystic in a country which is no longer mystic." Drew Philip calls his buildings "land art" that "struggle to emerge from the earth." He is the only architect to have won the discipline`s four most prestigious prizes: the Pritzker, Carlsberg, Praemium Imperiale, and Kyoto Prize. His name is Tadao Ando, and he is one of the world`s greatest living architects. Combining influences from Japanese tradition with the best of Modernism, Ando has developed a completely unique building aesthetic that makes use of concrete, wood, water, light, space, and nature in a way that has never been witnessed elsewhere in architecture. This book provides the perfect introduction to Ando`s work, including private homes, churches, museums, apartment complexes, and cultural spaces throughout Japan, and in France, Italy, Spain, and the USA.

Résumé:
Building/Art discusses changing ideas about the nature and function of the city as an essential cultural network, one that each of its inhabitants participates in, whether consciously or unconsciously. The city acts as a backdrop to everyday life and influences the ways in which individuals interact with a greater cultural community. How would life be different for us as individuals if we lived in a different kind of city? What interventions can be made at an architectural level to make our city a more engaging place to live? In this theoretical discussion and visual display of urbanism, vital connections are made between modernism as an international movement and its manifestations in Canadian architecture. With contributions from experts in diverse fields of inquiry, Building/Art offers a discussion of the dynamic relationship between form and culture in word and picture.

The book features a unique selection of international publications from Europe and the U.S.A. including "Merz" (1920's), "View" (1940's), "East Village Other" (1960's), "Punk" (1970's), "Raw" (1980's) and "Emigre" (1990's). The design of these magazines, often raucous and undisciplined, was as ground-breaking as the ideas they disseminated. Many were linked with controversial art, literary and political movements such as Dada, Surrealism, Modernism, the New Left and Deconstruction. They contain the work of many leading experimental artists and designers of their time from Kurt Schwitters and El Lissitzky in the 1920's and 30's, to Art Spiegelman and Rudy Vanderlans in the 1980's and 90's.

22 GAMMA Grid, 1953. The End of CIAM and the Bidonvilles of Casablanca For a short time in the 1950s the planning practices of European architects in North Africa and their studies of everyday life in the bidonvilles were of central importance in the CIAM debates about a redefinition of the modern movement. In spite of their great interest in the reality of life in Casablanca´s bidonvilles as analyzed in the GAMMA grid, the architects ignored the colonial conditions of their research: the repressive nature of the regime as well as the anti-colonial struggles. While opening up a discussion about an architecture that includes the local and thinks about processes and users, this study is also exemplary for the dilemma of post-war modernism, that of giving mainly aesthetic answers to social and political questions.

Résumé:
Lebanese-born artist, Huguette Caland (1931–2019) was a path-breaking figure in late modernism. The only daughter of the first Lebanese president, Bechara El Khoury, she produced a singular body of art that spanned media and continents. Working for more than five decades, her art is recognized for its embodied aesthetic and its unique sensuality. In this searching critical biography, author and curator, Omar Kholeif, disentangles the seeming madness, velocity, and the interiority of Caland’s life. Both an epistolary memoir and a biography, Kholeif, interleaves the affective experience of encountering the artist over a period of 18 years, as readers are summoned on a journey through clouds of bristling color. Here, Caland’s fields of light are set to lyric prose and poetry, fashioning a scene for looking at and experiencing the erotics of art anew.

Résumé:
The architecture of Geoffrey Bawa (1919-2003) was revolutionary. The Sri Lankan architect succeeded in fusing sensitivity for local context with the technological discoveries and design principles of modernism in his work. A pioneer of bioclimatic architecture, Bawa incorporated materials and layouts specific to Sri Lanka’s monsoon climate and storied architectural history into his modernist designs. Although he never built outside Asia, his work and way of thinking resonate far beyond the region. Gathering essays by scholars and writers across a multitude of disciplines, this volume spotlights the beautiful architectural drawings of Bawa’s practice. Illustrated with more than 200 drawings and photographs, many of which published for the first time, the book delves into the central, multipronged role of the medium in Bawa’s work. It also explores the identity of post-independence Sri Lanka, which Bawa helped to shape aesthetically and ideologically.

Résumé:
The Villa Tugendhat, designed by Mies van der Rohe in 1928, is an icon of architectural modernism and a UNESCO World Heritage site. This book tells the true story of the large family connected to it, who rose to prominence through industrial textile manufacturing. It traces the transformations in the life of the family, from their roots in a Jewish ghetto to part of the wealthy bourgeoisie in the Austro-Hungarian Empire to adaptation in interwar independent Czechoslovakia and flight in the face of Nazi invasion. Michael Lambek examines the generation born in the first decade of the twentieth century, especially Grete Tugendhat – Lambek’s maternal grandmother – who commissioned, inhabited, championed, and relinquished the distinctive modern house. The book also provides unpublished correspondence between Martin Heidegger and Ernst Tugendhat, Grete’s son, as well as a description of the impact of a 2017 family reunion.

Until recently, thanks to the unforgiving geometric rigors of modernism, biomorphism in design and architecture was seen a purely decorative feature - as in Art Nouveau, for example. This publication turns this idea on its head, offering a glimpse into the future of architectural design, in which the veins of leaves, formations of foam, Celtic knotwork and even hair braiding can be transformed into viable structures through the wonders of digital design technology. For the architect and researcher Lars Spuybroek, such natural, ornamental and folkloristic pattern could entirely replace standardized geometric design to determine the structural basis and aesthetic character of tomorrow's buildings. Here, Spuybroek presents both a theoretical framework and an inspiring taxonomy of patterns and structures, followed by more than 100 illustrated designs for skyscrapers and façades based on organizational principles ranging from rose windows to knitting patterns.

Résumé:
Throughout his life Adolf Loos raised his eloquent voice against the squandering of fine materials, frivolous ornamentation and unnecessary embellishments. His admirers consider him to be the inspiration for all modern architecture. Yet, few are acquainted with his amusing, incisive, critical and philosophical literary work reflecting on applied design and the essence of clothing in fin de siècle Vienna. Adolf Loos often had a radical, yet innovative outlook on life that made him such a nuisance for many of his contemporaries. His provocative musings on many subjects portray him as a man of varied interests and intellectual refinement as well as possessing a keen sense of style, which still has value today. For the first time the ‘Loos Dress Code’ is available in English. Included is a short social/historical look as the birth of Modernism in Adolf Loos’ Vienna.
