Résumé:
Welcome to the 60th issue of The Funambulist, which concludes the tenth year of publishing the magazine! On August 6th and 9th, The Funambulist will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the devastating US nuclear bombing of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Our contribution to the significance of these two massacres consists in convoking Indigenous perspectives from lands that have been exploited for these two bombings. The idea for it came from listening to Glen Sean Coulthard in Dene Country (in what the Canadian settler colony designates as Northwest Territories) about the uranium extracted from his nation’s land to fabricate the atomic bomb and three decades later, the visit of a Dene delegation to Hiroshima to apologize for the role of their labor and land in the nuclear bombing of the city. This understanding of interconnectedness between distant lands and peoples forms the editorial core of this issue.

Résumé:
The work of the recently deceased Bay-area photographer, Henry Wessel, is renowned for its fragmentary and compelling nature, each image urging imaginative leaps towards the fatalism and moral ambiguity of noir film and fiction. Every Wessel photograph is a gateway to a wild array of extraordinary storylines. This project, 'A Dark Thread', takes this semblance of an idea further by commissioning over a dozen renowned noir writers to produce a short story in response to one or more of Wessel’s black and white photographs. This first version of the project brings together French translations of stories by Art Taylor, Ivy Pochoda, and Alexander MacLeod, together with the photographs that inspired them. Straddling the space between literary publishing and photobook, this slim volume offers a new and original means of understanding Henry Wessel’s photography and accompanies a retrospective of his work at the Maison de la Photograhie in Paris (June 2019).

Résumé:
This is a previously-unpublished anthology edited by Dick Higgins in 1972 to celebrate Something Else Press, the publishing house he founded in 1963 to showcase Fluxus and other experimental artistic and literary forms. Higgins had a firm vision that radical art could be housed in book form and distributed throughout the world and he worked endlessly to cultivate new works that challenged conventional notions of both contemporary art and books. While other presses created extraordinary publications, none were able to achieve the breadth of titles and artists like Higgins, who successfully ran Something Else Press until 1974 in a manner that resembled a more traditional paperback publisher. The publication features a selection of writings from Claes Oldenburg, John Cage, Jackson Mac Low, Gertrude Stein, Bern Porter, Wolf Vostell, among others. An annotated checklist assembled by Hugh Fox and Higgins’s unpublished introduction are also included.

Résumé:
This publication documents a series of workshops and conversations hosted by Wendy’s Subway and organized by English-Arabic bilingual magazine Makzhin editor Mirene Arsanios on questions of formative literary influences. Three female Arab writers were invited to choose and discuss ten books that shaped their understanding of poetry and translation. Notwithstanding the difficulty of the task, Marwa Helal, Mona Kareem, and Iman Mersal played along, selecting—among a sea of influences—authors and/or translators whose works were key to their own practice, and to their embodied understanding of what it means to write in Arabic from a female perspective. Asking what kind of writings are/were available to them, and which books or translations unseated their understanding of the world, Helal, Kareem, and Mersal discuss writing within the diaspora and across borders, radical publishing and translation networks, cultural and linguistic translation, vernacular language as resistance, and more.

Résumé:
This publication is Trevor Paglen's first photographic monograph. Social scientist, artist, writer and provocateur, Paglen has been exploring the secret activities of the U.S. military and intelligence agencies--the "black world"--for the last eight years, publishing, speaking and making astonishing photographs. As an artist, Paglen is interested in the idea of photography as truth-telling, but his pictures often stop short of traditional ideas of documentation. In the series Limit Telephotography, for example, he employs high-end optical systems to photograph top-secret governmental sites; and in The Other Night Sky, he uses the data of amateur satellite watchers to track and photograph classified spacecraft in Earth's orbit. In other works Paglen transforms documents such as passports, flight data and aliases of CIA operatives into art objects. Rebecca Solnit contributes a searing essay that traces this history of clandestine military activity on the American landscape.

This encyclopedic book, as complex and vast as the city itself, references more than 3,000 projects constructed between the year 2000 and the present day. Across 1,500 pages, "New York 2020" describes and illustrates the "supertalls" now populating our skyline, lush riverfront parks born from derelict waterfront, iconic cultural destinations, and thousands of smaller, unheralded residential and civic projects that enhance the built environment and the urban fabric. Readers will discover work by leading architects, including Norman Foster, Renzo Piano, Bjarke Ingels, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Selldorf Architects, Frank Gehry, and Robert A.M. Stern Architects; a dazzling array of museums and institutions, including the High Line, Hudson Yards, the new Whitney Museum, and the expansions of MoMA and Lincoln Center; the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site; and more.
