The steel construction was designed by the American-born architect-artist Vito Acconci, based on the idea of Robert Punkenhofer, a native of Graz, and realized within the scope of Graz 2003: Kulturhauptstadt Europas. Acconci Island, consisting of various interlocking surfaces with flowing transitions, houses an amphitheatre, a café and a playground. Large parts of its outer stainless-steel skin reflect the city; acrylic fibre, glass, steel grids and peepholes provide a view onto the water and the banks, while the transparent materials make the building look weightless. The result is a breathtaking, technically sophisticated avant-garde piece of architecture that refuses categorization. The book documents the different stages of the design, and places sketches and computer simulations next to remarkable photographs of models as well as shots of the finished island. An interview with Vito Acconci and a presentation of the diverse work by the Acconci Studio round off the book.

Throughout the twentieth century, architects in Italy have attempted to define the role of architecture under diverse political systems, from the monarchy of the first seventy years since Italian unification, to the 21 years of Fascist control, to the post-Second World War parliamentary republic. At the same time, Italy holds some of the most prized architecture and art in the world, from antiquity to the baroque, packed into its dense historic city centres, which planners and politicians have negotiated as they struggled to cope with massive migration from the countryside to the city. Diane Ghirardo addresses these and other issues by considering modern architectural production in Italy from the late nineteenth century to the present day within a clear presentation of the larger historical, social and political contexts. From the post-unification efforts to identify a distinctly Italian architectural language to the transformation of the urban environment in Italian cities undergoing industrialization in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Diane Ghirardo challenges received interpretations of modern architecture, as well as focusing on the subject of illegal building and responses to current ecological challenges. In 1967, The Museum of Modern Art presented "New documents", a landmark exhibition organized by John Szarkowski that brought together a selection of works by three photographers whose individual achievements signaled the artistic potential for the medium in the 1960s and beyond: Diane Arbus, Lee Friedlander and Garry Winogrand. Though largely unknown at the time, these three photographers are now universally acknowledged as artists of singular talent within the history of photography. The exhibition articulated a profound shift in the landscape of 20th-century photography, and interest in the exhibition has only continued to expand. Yet, until now, there has been no publication that captures its content. Published in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the exhibition, Arbus Friedlander Winogrand features full-page reproductions of the 94 photographs included in the exhibition, along with Szarkowski’s original wall text, press release, installation views and an abundance of archival material. The heart of the book features 38 recent and ongoing projects, designed by leading international studios and rising talents. Buildings range from social housing and micro apartments to ‘vertical villages’, megastructures and luxury high-rises. Each project is considered for the way in which it enriches the lives of residents and the city, and is shown through drawings and photographs, taken from the street and within. The book also includes interviews with such contemporary masters of apartment design as Michael Maltzan, Lorcan O’Herlihy, Édouard François and Bjarke Ingels. As our cities grow more crowded, it is critical that we produce large-scale buildings that enhance the lives of their inhabitants, their surroundings and the urban environment as a whole. Over the past fifteen years, the Centre for Research Architecture at Goldsmiths, University of London, has brought together established and emergent scholars who convene to work with each other and share their ideas and insights. This new series invites the reader into this ever-evolving pedagogical context. Each book is organized around a specific spatial issue and brings together a heterogeneous range of materials and contributors. The first work in the series, ''Border Environments'', explores the entanglement of ecology and migration. It examines the interplay between discriminatory politics, emergent technologies, and bordering practices within the context of (constructed) natures by highlighting a variety of interventions, investigative techniques, visual projects, and modes of witnessing that address the role of both human and more-than-human actors in border struggles. As such, the book is also a provocation that can be used to identify and organize new lines of struggle connecting environmental and mobility justice.
