Romare Bearden (1911-1988) had a true Renaissance sensibility. He was a fine artist who also successfully turned his hand to printmaking, writing, costume and set design, as well as composing jazz music. In addition, he helped to found the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York's Cinque Gallery and the Black Academy of Arts and Letters, and was once even offered an opportunity to play professional baseball for the Philadelphia Athletics. But it is for his rich and textured collages that Bearden is best known today. In 1977, Bearden created a sequence of 20 collages based on episodes from Homer's Odyssey. It may come as a surprise to even his most avid followers that this devoted chronicler of African American culture and the Harlem Renaissance would gravitate to such a canonical text. But in the essay accompanying Romare Bearden: A Black Odyssey, scholar Robert G. O'Meally argues for their thematic consistency and suggests that, in the figures of Odysseus, Penelope, Poseidon, Nausicca and others, Bearden found themes sympathetic to the African American experience. These motifs of wandering, mourning and the questing for home--considering Bearden's scores of interiors and exteriors, country and city life and depictions of family love--emerge as the central themes of all his art. Ed Ruscha is one of the first American artists to introduce a critique of popular culture and an examination of language into the visual arts. Although he first made his reputation as a painter, Ruscha is also celebrated for his drawings (made both with conventional materials and with food, blood, gunpowder, and shellac), prints, films, photographs, and books. He is often associated with Los Angeles as a Pop and Conceptualist hub, but tends to regard such labels with a satirical, if not jaundiced, eye. Indeed, his work is characterized by the tensions between high and low, solemn and irreverent, and serious and nonsensical, and it draws on popular culture as well as Western art traditions. "Leave any information at the signal" not only documents the work of this influential artist as he rose to prominence but also contains his writings and commentaries on other artistic developments of the period. Under the label Atelier Zanolli, a fantastic world of silk fabrics painted and imprinted with patterns, opulently embroidered cushions, colorful pearl creations, and finely crafted leather and wood articles, was created between 1905 and 1939 in Zurich. The Zanollis had immigrated from Italy in 1905. Their family business was run by Antonietta and her daughters Pia, Lea, and Zoe Zanolli. The cultural and stylistic influences manifested in the Zanollis’ visually appealing products range from the avant-garde to an aesthetic forged by a spirit of intellectual national defense against the increasing threat of the totalitarian regimes in Nazi Germany, fascist Italy, and the communist Soviet Union, that was prevalent in Switzerland in the 1930s. Driven by a striving for artistic self-realization, the atelier defied the many economic challenges of the period and carried out many commissions for Zurich’s leading textile businesses and department stores. This book traces the history of Atelier Zanolli, places its work in the context of the growth of Zurich and the Swiss textile industry in the first half of the twentieth century, and for the first time positions the “Zanolli style” internationally. More than six hundred images show the wealth of colors and shapes in a veritable cosmos of textiles and crafted objects, as well as templates, sketches, private photographs, business cards, and letters. The essays illuminate the techniques and work processes used, discuss entire motif families and unique designs, and grant rare comprehensive insight into the tastes of the time.

Driven by a striving for artistic self-realization, the atelier defied the many economic challenges of the period and carried out many commissions for Zurich’s leading textile businesses and department stores. This book traces the history of Atelier Zanolli, places its work in the context of the growth of Zurich and the Swiss textile industry in the first half of the twentieth century, and for the first time positions the “Zanolli style” internationally. More than six hundred images show the wealth of colors and shapes in a veritable cosmos of textiles and crafted objects, as well as templates, sketches, private photographs, business cards, and letters.
